Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vagabond Journey, Around the World: A Narrative of Personal Experience, Illustrated With More Than One Hundred Photographs With all due respect to bank accounts, I Observed, I believe a man with a bit of energy and good health could start without money and make a journey around the globe. Laughter assailed the suggestion; yet as time rolled on I found myself often musing over that hastily conceived notion. Travel for pleasure has ever been considered a special privilege of the wealthy. That a man without ample funds should turn tourist seems to his fellow-beings an action little less reprehensible than an attempt to finance a corporation on worthless paper. He who would see the world, and has not been provided the means thereto by a considerate ancestor, should sit close at home until his life work is done, his fortune made. Then let him travel; when his eyes have grown too dim to catch the beauty of a distant landscape, when struggle and experience have rendered him blase and unimpressionable. Book excerpt: If you've ever done any extended low-budget traveling yourself, you'll recognize the author as 'one of us', but 100 years earlier. He was a back-packer long before that became a 'thing'. This is the fascinating account of a young man who makes an epic journey around the world in 1904. He originally intended to travel on the bum, without money, without weapons, and without carrying baggage or supplies. Instead, he wanted to depend both for protection and the necessities of life on personal endeavor and the native resources of each locality. He altered his original plan to decide to carry a Kodak camera and enough money to cover photography supplies ($104). The chief object of the journey was to live and work among the world's workers in every clime. His plan included no fixed itinerary. He left the details of his route to chance and the exigencies of circumstances. And it gets him everywhere around the globe. Harry Franck might be the quintessential backpacker; maybe he was the very first to do this. Since he brought his camera, this book is loaded with 100+ photographs of the 'coleur locale'. PS: some sensitive readers might get a tad bit offended by the unsalted opinions the writer has on the various countries and peoples he visits and contacts. The book was written in a time when 'Political-Correctness' wasn't a thing, yet. So you've been warned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Buddhist is the biography of an extraordinary Irish emigrant, sailor, and migrant worker who became a Buddhist monk and anti-colonial activist in early twentieth-century Asia. Born in Dublin in the 1850s, U Dhammaloka energetically challenged the values and power of the British Empire and scandalized the colonial establishment of the 1900s. He rallied Buddhists across Asia, set up schools, and argued down Christian missionaries--often using western atheist arguments. He was tried for sedition, tracked by police and intelligence services, and died at least twice. His story illuminates the forgotten margins and interstices of imperial power, the complexities of class, ethnicity and religious belonging in colonial Asia, and the fluidity of identity in the high Victorian period. Too often, the story of the pan-Asian Buddhist revival movement and Buddhism's remaking as a world religion has been told 'from above,' highlighting scholarly writers, middle-class reformers and ecclesiastical hierarchies. By turns fraught, hilarious, pioneering, and improbable, Dhammaloka's adventures 'from below' highlight the changing and contested meanings of Buddhism in colonial Asia. Through his story, authors Alicia Turner, Brian Bocking, and Laurence Cox offer a window into the worlds of ethnic minorities and diasporas, transnational networks, poor whites, and social movements. Dhammaloka's dramatic life rewrites the previously accepted story of how Buddhism became a modern global religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A delectable gastronomic expedition into the linked histories of global travel and global cuisine. From mangosteen fruit discovered in a colonial Indonesian marketplace to caviar served on the high seas in a cruise liner’s luxurious dining saloon, The Food Adventurers narrates the history of eating on the most coveted of tourist journeys: the around-the-world adventure. The book looks at what tourists ate on these adventures, as well as what they avoided, and what kinds of meals they described in diaries, photographs, and postcards. Daniel E. Bender shows how circumglobal travel shaped popular fascination with world cuisines while leading readers on a culinary tour from Tahitian roast pig in the 1840s, to the dining saloon of the luxury Cunard steamer Franconia in the 1920s, to InterContinental and Hilton hotel restaurants in the 1960s and ’70s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first full critical history of incognito social investigation texts – in other words, works detailing their authors’ experiences whilst pretending to be poor. The most famous example is Down and Out in Paris and London, but there has been a vast array of other works in the genre since it was created in 1866 by James Greenwood’s ‘A Night in a Workhouse’. It draws up a classification of incognito social investigation texts, dividing them into four subtypes. The first comprises those texts following most narrowly in James Greenwood’s footsteps, taking the extreme poor as their object of study. The next is the investigation of poverty through walking, for pedestrianism and poverty are fascinatingly linked. The third is that of people looking at relative poverty rather than absolute, where authors take on badly-paid work in order to report on it, which is when incognito social investigation becomes very much something carried out by women. We end looking at those incognito social investigators who settled in the areas they explored. Not only will this book recover the history of a genre that has long been ignored, however, but it will also offer significant close reading of many of the texts that it places within the tradition(s) it discovers.
