Book excerpt: This book teaches the most common ESL grammar points in an accessible way through real ESL errors together with suggested teaching techniques. Relevant grammar terminology is explained. The four objectives of this book are to help teachers: (1) identify common ESL grammar points and understand the details associated with each one; (2) improve their ability to answer any grammar question on the spot (when on the "hot seat"); (3) anticipate common ESL errors by grammar point, by first language, and/or by proficiency level; and (4) develop more effective grammar/language learning lessons. These objectives are for all teachers, whether they are teaching grammar directly or indirectly in a variety of classes -- including a grammar class, a writing class, a speaking class, an ESP class, or a K-12 class.

For students, it is a grammar guide to refer to any topic at a glance. The description of every rule is easily understandable without teachers’ help. It covers all the grammar rules for day-to-day requirements and all parts of speech with plenty of examples. The pronouns are very well-explained, especially nominative and objective pronouns, which are often confusing for many. The case is similar with verbs and adverbs.

Book excerpt: UGE takes a very wide view of the notion -grammar-: it deals not only with parts of speech (Part A), and with sentences (Part B), but also with textual features (Part C) and interactional features of language use (Part D). Hence there is a more encompassing framework in UGE in most other comparable grammars. This wide view follows from a concept of grammar which embraces various aspects of communication. Given such a wide scope, UGE could only be the product of a collective authorship. Each chapter has been written by a single author (or a team) and each of the four parts has, to a considerable extent, been harmonized and cross-referenced by the four co-editors. The English described in UGE is both British and American educated English, but British English has been taken as the main target, and only occasionally are specific features of American English highlighted. In most chapters a concerted effort has been made to describe the phenomena of English grammar from an implicitly contrastive viewpoint: the more exclusive features of English have been given greater consideration while those common to many languages have been considered in less detail."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grammar, Meaning, and Concepts: A Discourse-Based Approach to English Grammar is a book for language teachers and learners that focuses on the meanings of grammatical constructions within discourse, rather than on language as structure governed by rigid rules. This text emphasizes the ways in which users of language construct meaning, express viewpoints, and depict imageries using the conceptual, meaning-filled categories that underlie all of grammar. Written by a team of authors with years of experience teaching grammar to future teachers of English, this book puts grammar in the context of real language and illustrates grammar in use through an abundance of authentic data examples. Each chapter also provides a variety of activities that focus on grammar, genre, discourse, and meaning, which can be used as they are or can be adapted for classroom practice. The activities are also designed to raise awareness about discourse, grammar, and meaning in all facets of everyday life, and can be used as springboards for upper high school, undergraduate, and graduate level research projects and inquiry-based grammatical analysis. Grammar, Meaning, and Concepts is an ideal textbook for those in the areas of teacher education, discourse analysis, applied linguistics, second language teaching, ESL, EFL, and communications who are looking to teach and learn grammar from a dynamic perspective.

Book excerpt: The authoritative guide to using the English language effectively, from “the greatest writer on grammar and usage that this country has ever produced” (David Yerkes, Columbia University). The author of The Chicago Manual of Style’s popular “Grammar and Usage” chapter, Bryan A. Garner is renowned for explaining the vagaries of English with absolute precision and utmost clarity. With The Chicago Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation, he has written the definitive guide for writers who want their prose to be both memorable and correct. Garner describes standard literary English—the forms that mark writers and speakers as educated users of the language. He also offers historical context for understanding the development of these forms. The section on grammar explains how the canonical parts of speech came to be identified, while the section on syntax covers the nuances of sentence patterns as well as both traditional sentence diagramming and transformational grammar. The usage section provides an unprecedented trove of empirical evidence in the form of Google Ngrams, diagrams that illustrate the changing prevalence of specific terms over decades and even centuries of English literature. Garner also treats punctuation and word formation, and concludes the book with an exhaustive glossary of grammatical terms and a bibliography of suggested further reading and references. The Chicago Guide to Grammar, Usage, and Punctuation is a magisterial work, the culmination of Garner’s lifelong study of the English language. The result is a landmark resource that will offer clear guidelines to students, writers, and editors alike. “[A manual] for those of us laboring to produce expository prose: nonfiction books, journalistic articles, memorandums, business letters. The conservatism of his advice pushes you to consider audience and occasion, so that you will understand when to follow convention and when you can safely break it.”—John E. McIntyre, Baltimore Sun

The first part called 'Phonetics' will teach learners the formation of words a " the written and the spoken word in correlation with the letters of the alphabet and their phonetic values. The use of the parts of speech and their inflections, agreements in gender, number, etc., in the formation of sentences, is known as 'Morphology.' The division called 'Syntax' will teach language learners and users how words relate with other words in a sentence; it will also show how sentences can relate with other sentences in the process of achieving clear and concise communication . The essential grammatical skills acquired from this text, in summary, will enable learners of all ages and backgrounds, and professionals from all walks of life to communicate thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely, without doubt or hesitation. Horace Dalmolin is an experienced writer, a linguist, grammarian and lexicographer. Book excerpt: Updated and revised with more examples and expanded discussions, this second edition continues the aim of providing teachers with a solid understanding of the use and function of grammatical structures in American English. The book avoids jargon and presents essential grammatical structures clearly and concisely. Dr. DeCapua approaches grammar from a descriptive rather than a prescriptive standpoint, discussing differences between formal and informal language, and spoken and written English. The text draws examples from a wide variety of authentic materials to illustrate grammatical concepts. The many activities throughout the book engage users in exploring the different elements of grammar and in considering how these elements work together to form meaning. Users are encouraged to tap into their own, often subconscious, knowledge of grammar to consciously apply their knowledge to their own varied teaching settings. The text also emphasizes the importance of understanding grammar from the perspective of English language learners, an approach that allows teachers to better appreciate the difficulties these learners face. Specific areas of difficulties for learners of English are highlighted throughout.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New English Grammar, a grammar of American English, is the American version of the author's acclaimed Descriptive Grammar of English. While the grammar of American English and of British English (or International English) are essentially the same, there are some differences, and in this new American English version of the grammar, priority is given to American usage, making this an ideal reference book for teachers and students in high school, and for anyone else wanting to gain a clearer understanding of English grammar. A review of the Descriptive Grammar of English in EFL Magazine commended it for the "clarity of explanations and wealth of examples" For the purposes of this American English edition, examples of grammar usage have been selected to reflect the life and interests of readers in the United States, making them relevant to the experiences of American students or international students wishing to familiarize themselves with life and culture in the USA. This English Grammar uses American English spelling in those few cases where it differs from British English. It is important however to stress that American English and British English are one and the same language. The biggest differences between the two are phonetic, not grammatical. Native English speakers can usually tell if a speaker is from North America or from Britain, or maybe from Australia or some other part of the English-speaking world; but they will find it much harder to notice, without actually thinking about it, whether a written document is in American English or in British English. There are a few telltale signs; Americans write realize where the British will write realise; Americans write traveled while the British write travelled... and in this case it is the American spelling that respects the traditional rules concerning the doubling or not of consonants in English. In the twenty-first century however, there is so much movement of both written texts and audio documents that the differences between American English and British English are becoming blurred. People in the USA read books and magazine articles, not to mention websites, written in British English, and people in the UK read plenty of books, articles and websites written in American English. While most people in the USA who use a spell-checker when writing will use one that is set up for American English, some will use one set up for British or international English.... and if a few alert readers may notice the difference, most will not, and hardly any will be unduly worried. Still it makes sense for anyone in the USA, or international users who have more contact with American speakers, to look at grammar in an American context, which is what this grammar book does.
