Efficiently managing resources of the networks is more crucial now, than ever before, to meet users’ rapidly increasing demand for higher data rates, better quality-of-service (QoS) and seamless coverage. Some of the techniques that can be incorporated within heterogeneous wireless networks to achieve this objective are interworking of the networks, user multi-homing and device-to-device (D2D) communication. Designing resource allocation algorithms to suit real world conditions is also important, as the algorithms should be deployable and perform well in real networks. For example, two of the conditions considered in this book are resource allocation intervals of different networks are different and small cell base stations have limited computational capacity. To address the first condition, resource allocation algorithms for interworking systems are designed to allocate resources of different networks at different time-scales. To address the second condition, resource allocation algorithms are designed to be able to run at cloud computing servers. Book excerpt: Unlike 2G systems where the radius of macro base station (MBS) could reach several kilometers, the cell radius of LTE-Advanced and next generation wireless networks (NGWNs) such as 5G networks would be random and up to a few hundred meters in order to overcome the radio signal propagation impairments. Heterogeneous wireless networks (HetNets) are becoming an integral part of the NGWNs especially 5G networks, where small cell base stations (SBSs), wireless-fidelity (WiFi) access points (APs), cellular BSs and device-to-device (D2D) enabled links coexist together. HetNets represent novel approaches for the mobile data offloading, resource allocation and coverage probability problems that help to optimize the network traffic. However, heterogeneity and interworking among different radio access technologies bring new challenges such as bandwidth resource allocation, user/cell association, traffic offloading based on the user activity and coverage probability in HetNets. This dissertation attempts to address three key research areas: traffic offloading, bandwidth resource allocation and coverage probability problems in HetNets. In the first part of this dissertation, we derive the mathematical framework to calculate the required active user population factor (AUPF) of small cells based on the probabilistic traffic models. The number of total mobile users and number of active mobile users have different probabilistic distributions such as different combinations of Binomial and Poisson distributions. Furthermore, AUPF is utilized to investigate the downlink BS and backhaul power consumption of HetNets. In the second part, we investigate two different traffic offloading (TO) schemes (a) Path loss (PL) and (b) Signal-to-Interference ratio (SIR) based strategies. In this context, a comparative study on two techniques to offload the traffic from macrocell to small cell is studied. Additionally, the AUPF, small cell access scheme and traffic type are included into a PL based TO strategy to minimize the congested macrocell traffic. In the third part, the joint user assignment and bandwidth resource allocation problem is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP). Due to its intractability and computational complexity, the MINLP problem is transformed into a convex optimization problem via a binary variable relaxation approach. Based on the mathematical analysis of the problem, a heuristic algorithm for joint user assignment and bandwidth allocation is presented. The proposed solution achieves a near optimal user assignment and bandwidth allocation at reduced computational complexity. Lastly, we investigate the transition between traditional hexagonal BS deployment to random BS placement in HetNets. Independent Poisson Point Processes (PPPs) are used to model the random locations of BSs. Lloyds algorithm is investigated for analyzing the coverage probability in a network which functions as a bridge between random and structural BS deployments. The link distance distribution is obtained by using the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm which is further utilized for calculating the coverage probability. This thesis contributes for evolution of convergence of wireless heterogeneous networks and to propose novel mechanisms to support low latency handover at authentication level using network selection, security context management and mobility in future telecom ecosystem to allow ubiquitous access to the Internet and services to any individual on the move. This access should be possible anytime anywhere while ensuring the right level of security to the end users as well to the networks. One main objective of the thesis is to define seamless secured roaming mechanisms to enable subscribers or users to roam along different access networks indifferent of access technologies, operators and accessing mechanisms. The proposed thesis provides a roaming & interworking solution using intermediary entity, called Roaming Interworking Intermediary (RII), which enable the secure handover across different access systems and different operator domains without service interruption. RII acts like a broker in the RII architecture between home and visited operator networks. RII provides mobility management, context transfer between service providers, security architecture for authentication and associations of users while roaming, network and presence management. The thesis also defines new mechanisms to enable low latency during handovers and roaming by optimizing and introducing new authentication and mobility models (post handover techniques) in heterogeneous networks. We have provided new methods to solve ever longing issue of user identity and routing of user authentication information from visiting access networks with or without a direct SLA with the home network. We have introduced dynamic authentication model with the proposed RII architecture where a user or subscriber gets authenticated at the visiting network without re-routing authentication information to home networks. The thesis also propose a new mobility mechanisms based on Proxy Mobile IP and extending AAA infrastructure to obtain very low latency during handover in WLAN, WIMAX and 3G networks. Testbeds and comparative studies between proposed and existing models for authentication and mobility are provided. This thesis also provides novel pre handover techniques in heterogeneous networks to ensure seamless handover during mobility and roaming. This method is a network centric approach where the access networks controls whole procedures of network selection, security, mobility etc... with the help of mobile terminals and visiting networks. Therefore, new models for location prediction based Network selection, security context management for authentications, context based mobility models are proposed in this thesis. New supporting protocols and extensions of existing protocol to achieve seamless handovers are proposed in this work. A full testbed is built with the implementation of the proposed protocols to evaluate the proposed of the efficiency of the proposed mechanisms.
