Book excerpt: In this thesis, a fault detection and isolation (FDI) method is developed for aircraft engines by utilizing nonlinear adaptive estimation techniques. Engine sensor faults, actuator faults and component faults are considered under one unified framework. The fault diagnosis architecture consists of a bank of nonlinear adaptive estimators. One of them is the fault detection estimator used for fault detection, and the remaining ones are fault isolation estimators employed to determine the particular fault type/location after fault detection. Each isolation estimator is designed based on the functional structure of a particular fault type under consideration. The FDI architecture has been integrated with the Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System Simulation (C-MAPSS) engine model developed by NASA researchers in recent years. Extensive simulation results and comparative studies are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the nonlinear FDI method.

Book excerpt: In this paper, a bank of Kalman filters is applied to aircraft gas turbine engine sensor and actuator fault detection and isolation (FDI) in conjunction with the detection of component faults. This approach uses multiple Kalman filters, each of which is designed for detecting a specific sensor or actuator fault. In the event that a fault does occur, all filters except the one using the correct hypothesis will produce large estimation errors, thereby isolating the specific fault. In the meantime, a set of parameters that indicate engine component performance is estimated for the detection of abrupt degradation. The proposed FDI approach is applied to a nonlinear engine simulation at nominal and aged conditions, and the evaluation results for various engine faults at cruise operating conditions are given. The ability of the proposed approach to reliably detect and isolate sensor and actuator faults is demonstrated. (7 tables, 4 figures, 17 refs.).

Book excerpt: Theincreasingcomplexityofspacevehiclessuchassatellites, andthecostreduction measures that have affected satellite operators are increasingly driving the need for more autonomy in satellite diagnostics and control systems. Current methods for detecting and correcting anomalies onboard the spacecraft as well as on the ground are primarily manual and labor intensive, and therefore, tend to be slow. Operators inspect telemetry data to determine the current satellite health. They use various statisticaltechniques andmodels, buttheanalysisandevaluation ofthelargevolume of data still require extensive human intervention and expertise that is prone to error. Furthermore, for spacecraft and most of these satellites, there can be potentially unduly long delays in round-trip communications between the ground station and the satellite. In this context, it is desirable to have onboard fault-diagnosis system that is capable of detecting, isolating, identifying or classifying faults in the system withouttheinvolvementandinterventionofoperators.Towardthisend, theprinciple goal here is to improve the ef?ciency, accuracy, and reliability of the trend analysis and diagnostics techniques through utilization of intelligent-based and hybrid-based methodologies.

Book excerpt: In this report, a fault detection and isolation (FDI) system which utilizes a bank of Kalman filters is developed for aircraft engine sensor and actuator FDI in conjunction with the detection of component faults. This FDI approach uses multiple Kalman filters, each of which is designed based on a specific hypothesis for detecting a specific sensor or actuator fault. In the event that a fault does occur, all filters except the one using the correct hypothesis will produce large estimation errors, from which a specific fault is isolated. In the meantime, a set of parameters that indicate engine component performance is estimated for the detection of abrupt degradation. The performance of the FDI system is evaluated against a nonlinear engine simulation for various engine faults at cruise operating conditions. In order to mimic the real engine environment, the nonlinear simulation is executed not only at the nominal, or healthy, condition but also at aged conditions. When the FDI system designed at the healthy condition is applied to an aged engine, the effectiveness of the FDI system is impacted by the mismatch in the engine health condition. Depending on its severity, this mismatch can cause the FDI system to generate incorrect diagnostic results, such as false alarms and missed detections. To partially recover the nominal performance, two approaches, which incorporate information regarding the engine s aging condition in the FDI system, will be discussed and evaluated. The results indicate that the proposed FDI system is promising for reliable diagnostics of aircraft engines.Kobayashi, Takahisa and Simon, Donald L. Book excerpt: The problem of fault diagnosis and reconfigurable control is a new and actually developing field of science and engineering. The subject becomes more interesting since there is an increasing demand for the navigation and control systems of aerospace vehicles, automated actuators etc. to be more safe and reliable. Nowadays, the problems of fault detection and isolation and reconfigurable control attract the attention the scientists in the world. The subject is emphasized in the recent international congresses such as IF AC World Congresses (San Francisco-1996, Beijing-1999, and Barcelona-2002) and lMEKO World Congresses (Tampere-1997, Osaka-1999, Vienna-2000), and also in the international conferences on fault diagnosis such as SAFEPROCESS Conferences (Hull-1997, Budapest-2000). The presented methods in the book are based on linear and nonlinear dynamic mathematical models of the systems. Technical objects and systems stated by these models are very large, and include various control systems, actuators, sensors, computer systems, communication systems, and mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic devices. The analytical fault diagnosis techniques of these objects have been developed for several decades. Many of those techniques are based on the use of the results of modem control theory. This is natural, because it is known that fault diagnosis process in control systems is considered as a part of general control process. xxii In organization of fault diagnosis of control systems, the use of the concepts and methods of modem control theory including concepts of state space, modeling, controllability, observability, estimation, identification, and filtering is very efficient.

Book excerpt: Fault Detection and Fault-tolerant Control Using Sliding Modes is the first text dedicated to showing the latest developments in the use of sliding-mode concepts for fault detection and isolation (FDI) and fault-tolerant control in dynamical engineering systems. It begins with an introduction to the basic concepts of sliding modes to provide a background to the field. This is followed by chapters that describe the use and design of sliding-mode observers for FDI using robust fault reconstruction. The development of a class of sliding-mode observers is described from first principles through to the latest schemes that circumvent minimum-phase and relative-degree conditions. Recent developments have shown that the field of fault tolerant control is a natural application of the well-known robustness properties of sliding-mode control. A family of sliding-mode control designs incorporating control allocation, which can deal with actuator failures directly by exploiting redundancy, is presented. Various realistic case studies, specifically highlighting aircraft systems and including results from the implementation of these designs on a motion flight simulator, are described. A reference and guide for researchers in fault detection and fault-tolerant control, this book will also be of interest to graduate students working with nonlinear systems and with sliding modes in particular. Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rapid technological advances have led to more and more complex industrial systems with significantly higher risk of failures. Therefore, in this dissertation, a model-based fault diagnosis and prognosis framework has been developed for fast and reliable detection of faults and prediction of failures in nonlinear systems. In the first paper, a unified model-based fault diagnosis scheme capable of detecting both additive system faults and multiplicative actuator faults, as well as approximating the fault dynamics, performing fault type determination and time-to-failure determination, is designed. Stability of the observer and online approximator is guaranteed via an adaptive update law. Since outliers can degrade the performance of fault diagnostics, the second paper introduces an online neural network (NN) based outlier identification and removal scheme which is then combined with a fault detection scheme to enhance its performance. Outliers are detected based on the estimation error and a novel tuning law prevents the NN weights from being affected by outliers. In the third paper, in contrast to papers I and II, fault diagnosis of large-scale interconnected systems is investigated. A decentralized fault prognosis scheme is developed for such systems by using a network of local fault detectors (LFD) where each LFD only requires the local measurements. The online approximators in each LFD learn the unknown interconnection functions and the fault dynamics. Derivation of robust detection thresholds and detectability conditions are also included. The fourth paper extends the decentralized fault detection from paper III and develops an accommodation scheme for nonlinear continuous-time systems. By using both detection and accommodation online approximators, the control inputs are adjusted in order to minimize the fault effects. Finally in the fifth paper, the model-based fault diagnosis of distributed parameter systems (DPS) with parabolic PDE representation in continuous-time is discussed where a PDE-based observer is designed to perform fault detection as well as estimating the unavailable system states. An adaptive online approximator is incorporated in the observer to identify unknown fault parameters. Adaptive update law guarantees the convergence of estimations and allows determination of remaining useful life"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Fault detection and isolation plays a critical role in aircraft engines and the performance of their control systems. A great amount of research on model-based fault detection and isolation of aircraft engines has been studied since the 1970s. Model-based fault detection and isolation methods rely on the accuracy of the model. Model uncertainty, disturbances and noise, etc., all have a great impact on the fault detection and isolation design results. A challenge in the fault detection applications is the design of a scheme which can distinguish between model uncertainties, disturbances and the occurrence of faults. Most of the current approaches use a constant detection threshold. Currently, there are no useful guidelines for constant optimal threshold selection. In the absence of faults, a predetermined constant threshold would lead to more false alarms and missed detections under modeling uncertainties. Hence a technique to accommodate uncertainties and disturbances in the model, help in reducing false alarms and missed detections is essential for the enhancement of aircraft engine operations. In this work, a dynamic threshold algorithm is developed for aircraft engine fault detection and isolation that accommodates parametric uncertainties and disturbances. The algorithm takes the parametric uncertainties into consideration and proposes a dynamic threshold that makes use of the bounds on the parametric uncertainties which can thus distinguish an actual fault from the model uncertainties. First we design Kalman filters or unknown input observers based on the linearized engine model about a given nominal operating point, but the filters or observers use the measurements from the nonlinear engine model which includes uncertainty description. Using the robustness analysis of parametric uncertain systems, we generate upper-bound and lower-bound time response trajectories of the dynamic threshold. The extent of parametric uncertainties is assumed to be such that the perturbed eigenvalues reside in a set of distinct circular regions. A set of "structured" Kalman filters or unknown input observers are used for engine sensor or actuator fault diagnosis design. The residuals are errors between measured outputs and estimated outputs from a set of Kalman filters or a set of unknown input observers. With the dynamic threshold design approach, the residual crossing the upper bound or lower bound of the dynamic threshold indicates the occurrence of fault. Application to an aircraft turbofan engine model illustrates the performance of the proposed method.

This dissertation presents a general framework for fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control in nonlinear dynamical systems in the presence of possibly unstructured modeling uncertainty. The overall architecture is based on a learning approach, where the unknown fault is estimated using adaptive and on-line approximation techniques. First, the problem of fault detection and isolation in nonlinear uncertain systems is investigated. A novel fault isolation scheme is presented with its robustness and sensitivity properties enhanced by the use of adaptive thresholds in the residual evaluation stage. The fault isolation scheme is rigorously analyzed for its fault isolability condition and fault isolation time. Then we integrate the fault diagnosis (fault detection and isolation) scheme with fault-tolerant control design. Based on the fault information obtained during the diagnosis procedure, the system controller is reconfigured after fault detection and fault isolation, respectively, to compensate the effects of the fault. The closed-loop stability of the integrated fault-tolerant control system is established for different modes of the controlled plant. The effectiveness of the proposed fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control scheme is illustrated via simulations in the three-tank system, a rigid-link robotic manipulator and the van der Pol oscillator system.
