This ability depends on the ventral visual stream, a series of cortical areas that progressively transforms the signal from the retina into representations of object category, location, color, texture, and size. Our understanding of the function and development of the ventral visual stream is anchored in the tight coupling between structure and function in the constituent cortical areas: in each area, neurons are arranged in the cortical sheet according to the visual features they respond most strongly to. In the earliest stage of the ventral visual stream neighboring neurons preferentially respond to edges of similar orientations and colors, whereas neurons toward the end of the ventral stream cluster together according to their preferred object category, e.g., faces, limbs, and places. Understanding the development and purpose of this functional organization requires the construction of detailed models whose predictions can be evaluated against neural measurements. In this dissertation, I present topographic deep convolutional neural networks (topographic DCNNs) as unifying models of neural structure and function throughout the ventral visual stream. Topographic DCNNs implement the simple hypothesis that functional organization in the visual cortex can be reproduced by optimizing the parameters of a neural network to perform a challenging visual task while keeping local populations of neurons correlated with one another. I find that topographic DCNNs are able to reproduce functional organization in both early and later stages of the ventral visual stream, that this brain-model correspondence is strongest for more biologically-plausible learning algorithms, and that topographic DCNNs can be used to predict how changes to visual inputs during development will affect cortical map formation. The success of topographic DCNNs in the prediction of the functional organization of the primate ventral visual stream implies the existence of simple unifying principles for the development of those regions, and serves as a foundation from which increasingly accurate models of visual processing can be constructed.

Given the impressive proliferation of papers on visual cortex over the intervening eight years, Volume 10 has specifically targeted visual cortex in primates and, even so, it has not been possible to survey all of the major or relevant developments in this area. Some research areas are experiencing rapid change and can best be treated more comprehensively in a subsequent volume; for example, elaboration of color vision; patterns and subdivisions of functional columns. One major goal of this volume has been to provide an overview of the intrinsic structural and functional aspects of area 17 itself. Considerable pro gress has been made since 1985 in unraveling the modular and laminar organi zation of area 17; and this aspect is directly addressed in the chapters by Peters, Lund et al., Wong-Riley, and Casagrande and Kaas. A recurring leitmotif here is the evidence for precise and exquisite order in the interlaminar and tangential connectivity of elements. At the same time, however, as detailed by Lund et al. and Casagrande and Kaas, the very richness of the connectivity implies a multi plicity of processing routes. This reinforces evidence that parallel pathways may not be strictly segregated. Further connectional complexity is contributed by the various sets of inhibitory neurons, as reviewed by Lund et al. and Jones et al.

As discussed by Rowe and Stone (1977) as well as by others, there is an unfortunate tendency for role-indicating names to lead to fixed ideas about function, in contrast to those that are more neutral and adaptable to new findings.

However, this narrow view of visual neuroscience ignores the fact that vision is widely distributed throughout the animal kingdom, enabling a wide repertoire of complex behaviors in species from insects to birds, fish, and mammals. Recent years have seen a resurgence of interest in alternative animal models for vision research, especially rodents. This resurgence is partly due to the availability of increasingly powerful experimental approaches (e.g., optogenetics and two-photon imaging) that are challenging to apply to their full potential in primates. Meanwhile, even more phylogenetically distant species such as birds, fish, and insects have long been workhorse animal models for gaining insight into the core computations underlying visual processing. In many cases, these animal models are valuable precisely because their visual systems are simpler than the primate visual system. Simpler systems are often easier to understand, and studying a diversity of neuronal systems that achieve similar functions can focus attention on those computational principles that are universal and essential. This Research Topic provides a survey of the state of the art in the use of animal models of visual functions that are alternative to macaques. Book excerpt: Under the longstanding model of the primate primary visual cortex (V1), color and form are processed by distinct neurons that are clustered according to cytochrome oxidase (CO) expression. Previous studies have demonstrated that there is not strict spatial segregation but have continued to support the model at single neuron level; previous studies have failed to identify neurons selective for both orientation and color that respond much more strongly to their preferred color (on an equiluminant background) than to achromatic stimuli. But previous studies have been limited in their spatial resolution and sampling of stimulus space, leaving several outstanding questions. We overcame limitations of previous studies by utilizing GCaMP6f 2-photon calcium imaging, which enabled long-term recording from large populations of neurons with single neuron resolution. We displayed a variety of stimuli, including equiluminant colored gratings and luminance-modulated achromatic gratings at a variety of orientations and spatial frequencies. We also conducted reverse correlation using cone-isolating gratings to map the cone inputs individual neurons. Finally, we aligned our calcium imaging results with intrinsic signal imaging (ISI) and postmortem histology to relate the responses of individual neurons to functional and anatomical markers, such as CO blobs. We reveal that nearly half (46.4%) of neurons in V1's superficial (cortico-cortical output) layers prefer colored to achromatic stimuli and nearly one-fifth (19.1%) respond more than twice as strongly to colored stimuli. Amongst these strongly color-preferring cells, the majority (11.6% of all cells) are also strongly orientation selective and located far from CO blobs, while the remaining color-preferring cells (7.5% of all cells) are poorly tuned for orientation and located close to CO blobs. We also reveal that cells are spatially organized according to preferred color and the sign of their dominant cone inputs. These findings demonstrate that color and form are jointly processed by a previously unreported population of neurons located predominantly in the interblobs of primate V1, indicating that early and integrated processing contributes to perception of visual objects. Observations that both cone inputs and preferred hues are systematically mapped within V1 are likely to reflect underlying organization of thalamic inputs and local circuits within V1.
