Book excerpt: Psalm 1:3He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of waterThat brings forth its fruit in its season,Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper. This book was written to help Christians succeed in their daily walks. This success comes with the stability of a tree with a large root system being constantly fed with rivers of water that is able to withstand all the pressures that may come its way looking to bring it down. The book is designed as a daily devotional that goes alongside The One Year Bible. At the top of each page is a daily scripture reading that will take one through the entire Bible in a year in a systematic fashion. The devotion is taken directly from the daily reading to help the reader to focus and meditate throughout the day on a specific lesson. I know without a shadow of doubt that a Christian who takes time to regularly read God's Word, then meditate on it and do it will be like A Tree Firmly Planted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” — 1 John 2:15 Those who struggle with habitual sin are keenly aware of the despair and fatigue that comes from trying harder and harder to control the desire to do what is wrong in the eyes of God. For this person, there be times of limited success in overcoming sin, but eventually he/she falls back again into unhealthy patterns. In "The Expulsive Power of a New Affection", Thomas Chalmers argues that no matter how hard we may try, we’ll never overcome habitual sin in our lives unless we switch our affections from the world to Jesus Christ. Thankfully Christ loved us first and is more than willing to set us free if we’d only realize the true Gospel power that we can all have in our lives today.

This volume--based on a two-year collaboration with the Project on Lived Theology at the University of Virginia--offers a series of illustrations and styles of lived theology, in conversation with other major approaches to the religious interpretation of embodied life.

Book excerpt: If you are serious about being a disciple of Jesus Christ—really, truly serious—a discipleship group can help you achieve that goal. Jesus established this model for us by forming and leading the first discipleship group—and it worked. The men who emerged from that group took the gospel to the world and ultimately laid down their lives for Christ. Discipleship groups can create an atmosphere for fellowship, encouragement, and accountability—building an environment where God can work. In Growing Up: How to Be a Disciple Who Makes Disciples, Robby Gallaty presents a practical, easy-to-implement system for growing in one's faith. This guide offers a manual for making disciples, addressing the what, why, where, and how of discipleship. D-Groups, as Gallaty calls them, can teach you and others how to grow your relationship with God, how to defend your faith, and how to guide others in their relationships with God. Growing Up provides you with an interactive manual and resource for creating and working with discipleship groups, allowing you to gain positive information both for yourself and for others as you learn how to help others become better disciples for Christ.

Book excerpt: Life is a journey filled with mountaintops, valleys, tough terrain, and peaceful meadows. During the victorious and bright moments, happiness is present and within reach. But in the hard, dark moments, brokenness and pain seem more persistent. There are numerous situations in life that may leave us feeling broken. In these situations, it helpful to keep in mind that a broken tree with strong roots can still survive and thrive. The resiliency, strength, and fruitfulness of a tree is dependent on the soil in which it is planted. A tree planted in unhealthy soil will not prosper. But a tree that is firmly planted in soil that is full of nutrients will grow in abundance. It is the same with our lives. We must assess the soil in which we are planted. The word of God contains the nutrients we need to grow in grace, conquer the storms, and to flourish in abundant living. This book serves as a guide on the journey to discover and continuously refresh ourselves with the nutrients found within the word of God.

Book excerpt: Why are so many Christians stagnant in their faith? Why do we often live as though the gospel stops at the moment of conversion? The good news of Jesus doesn’t stop the moment we get saved. In fact, salvation is only the beginning of God’s work in our lives. We often view salvation as the ending point; it’s really the beginning point. The gospel of Jesus doesn’t only justify us; it sanctifies us. When we receive the Holy Spirit at salvation, an incredible work begins to happen in us: we begin to bear fruit. When we are firmly planted in the gospel and committed to growing in Christ, He produces in us the fruits of the Spirit, the marks of a true Christian. In Bearing Fruit, Robby Gallaty walks us through the life of the Christian. Biblical, intentional, and practical, Bearing Fruit points our hearts to the gracious God who called us, justified us, and is now sanctifying us by the work of his Holy Spirit.

That book found the background for the outer darkness in the OT, principally in the book of Isaiah. The present book expounds that OT background for the outer darkness by examining the precursor texts in Psalms, especially Ps 1-2. The outer darkness is explained in relation to New Jerusalem. The water of life is a free gift for those who drink it outside the city walls but a reward at its point of origin at the throne atop the city. The tree of life is a reward that is found on both sides of the river of life inside the city. The water of life flows through the city gate to the outside of the city, where it can be drunk freely. But the tree of life is not found freely outside the city. When David describes the faithful believer as a tree firmly planted by the streams of waters, he prophetically anticipates the rewards faithful believers will receive in New Jerusalem, which he perceives in terms of Mount Zion. New Jerusalem is the heavenly version of this mountain. The earthly version is but the shadow of this heavenly reality. David sees the shadow, speaks in terms of typology, and anticipates the Heavenly City. Whereas David foresees the reward of the faithful, he also foresees the punishment of the unfaithful. Naturally, since he associates the reward of the faithful with inhabitation in the Holy City, the punishment of the unholy is, not surprisingly, associated with lack of access to this Reward City. An appendix includes some of the author's collaborating material from other books pertaining to other Zionistic texts dealing with New Jerusalem and the outer darkness. Texts for Isaiah are of particular interest for the OT background for the outer darkness and misthological death, that is, death in terms of loss of rewards.

Book excerpt: The internationally known author and speaker provides an insightful look into the fusion of ecological issues and global gender politics. This book on the importance of trees grew out of Bolen’s experience mourning the loss of a Monterey pine that was cut down in her neighborhood. That, combined with her practice of walking among tall trees, led to her deep connection with trees and an understanding of their many complexities. She expertly explores the dynamics of ecological activism, spiritual activism, and sacred feminism. And, she invites us to join the movement to save trees. While there is still much work to be done to address environmental problems, there are many stories of individuals and organizations rising up to make a change and help save our planet. The words and stories that Bolen weaves throughout this book are both inspirational and down-to-earth, calling us to realize what is happening to not only our trees, but our people. In Like a Tree learn more about: The dynamic nature of trees — from their anatomy to their role as an archetypal symbol Pressing social issues such as deforestation, global warming, and overpopulation What it means to be a “tree person” “You will never again see [a tree] without knowing it has a novel inside, it’s supporting your life, and it’s more spiritual than any church, temple or mosque. Like a Tree is the rare book that not only informs, but offers a larger consciousness of life itself.” —Gloria Steinem
