Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Authorship of Ecclesiastes: To Which Is Added a Dissertation on That Which Was Spoken Through Jeremiah the Prophet, as Quoted in Matthew 27; 9-10 There are special reasons why, if one of those portions of Holy Scripture which are disputed as to their authorship were to be selected for particular investigation, that portion should be the Book of Ecclesiastes. Some commentators and critics may indeed assign to different canonical books different relative values, and may accordingly maintain that the date and authorship of Deuteronomy, or of Isaiah 40 to 66, or of the Book of Daniel, are of more importance than the date and authorship of Ecclesiastes. 'The book of Daniel is especially fitted, ' says Dr. Pusey, 'to be a battle-field between faith and unbelief. It admits of no half-measures. It is either Divine or an imposture. To write any book under the name of another, and to give it out to be his, is, in any case, a forgery, dishonest in itself, and destructive of all trustworthiness. But the case as to the book of Daniel, if it were not his, would go far beyond even this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ecclesiastes, the authorial voice of Qohelet presents an identity that has challenged readers for centuries. This book offers a reception history of the different ways readers have constructed Qohelet as an author. Previous reception histories of Ecclesiastes group readings into "premodern" and "critical," or separate Jewish from Christian readings. In deliberate contrast, this analysis arranges readings thematically according to the interpretive potential inherent in the text, a method of biblical reception history articulated by Brennan Breed. Doing so erases the artificial distinctions between so-called scholarly and confessional readings and highlights the fact that many modern academic readings of the authorship of Ecclesiastes travel in well-worn interpretive paths that long predate the rise of critical scholarship. Thus this book offers a reminder that, while critical biblical scholarship is an essential part of the interpretive task, academic readings are themselves indebted to the Bible’s reception history and a part of it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is wrong with the author of Ecclesiastes? Why is there a book in the Bible that tells us that all is vanity? Who is the author? Ecclesiastes: A Participatory Study Guide is the ninth volume in the Participatory Study Series and the first that is a guide to an Old Testament book. There has been much controversy about the correct approach to interpreting Ecclesiastes. Is the author clinically depressed? Should you read the book when you're down in order to find someone who can join you in your misery? Is there anything uplifting in it? There are some who have thought the book doesn't belong in the Bible at all. Russell L. Meek takes a different approach. Through a serious study of the language and of the relationship between the text and that of other Bible writers, he discovers a much more positive message. It is still a book that can help you if you're looking at the troubles and problems of the world. But it is more than a place to find a companion in misery. In its text you can find help from someone who knows the way out, who knows how a person of faith, even if that faith is tried to the breaking point, can find enjoyment and rest in God. Its six lessons are thematic, covering issues such as the date, authorship and literary context of the book, the meaning of the key Hebrew word hebel, traditionally translated "vanity," the theme of death in Ecclesiastes, the way the author makes use of other scriptural text and why this is important to our understanding of the book, injustice, and how we should respond to the troubles of life. It is not just a theoretical study, but always examines how this Bible book can guide us in our lives. This study guide continues the tradition of the Participatory Study Series by helping to model different techniques and approaches for Bible study. The author doesn't just tell you what the text means; he shows you how to discover this and gives you the opportunity to interact with the Bible text for yourself. It's designed for use by small groups, but it is also suitable for individual study. As is the case with each volume in this series, it includes pointers to help with your own Bible study and lists of resources to help guide you.

Book excerpt: Taking advantage of the unprecedented access to books and information that has become available in the last few years, this bibliography identifies and traces the history of hundreds of books and articles on Ecclesiastes published in many different languages before 1875. It includes not just scholarly literature but exegetical sermons, homiletic works, and poetic paraphrases of the text in order to offer significantly more comprehensive coverage than in any earlier bibliography. The publication history of each work is outlined in detail, with brief discussions of the background or content where appropriate, cross-references are given to major bibliographies and bibliographical databases, and indexes of authors, publishers, and biblical references are provided. Intended to serve as an important resource not only for students of Ecclesiastes and for bibliographers but for all who are interested in the history of reception or interpretation of the Bible, this bibliography also includes coverage of many more general works on the Megillot, on the Old Testament, and on the Bible as a whole in this period.

Book excerpt: Ecclesiastes is at once a strange book and a modern one, at once enigmatic and curiously familiar. Here we find a man detached from the world and yet intensely aware of it, setting down in writing his thoughts about human life. Yet from the very first his readers have been unable to agree about his basic attitude to life. Whybray sorts through the options by asking questions regarding the author, his times, his language and his ideas.

Book excerpt: The book of Ecclesiastes is probably best known for its repeated refrain that "everything is meaningless," or "vanity." However, a thorough reading demonstrates that this is not its final conclusion. Knut Heim's Tyndale commentary shows that the book is intellectually sophisticated, theologically rich, emotionally deep—and full of humor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. Stafford Wright calls it the black sheep of the Bible. Some interpreters stumble over the Book of Ecclesiastes; those whose writings appear in this collection see an important, unified message. 'Reflecting with Solomon' gathers some of the best scholarship on Ecclesiastes. The result is a solid introduction to Old Testament Wisdom Literature and more detail for study, preaching, and teaching than is found in most commentaries. Some articles cover the authorship, themes, difficulties, and overall structure in Ecclesiastes; others analyze specific texts. Among the contributors are Roland E. Murphy, Emeritus Professor of Biblical Studies, Duke University; Donald R. Glenn, Chair of Old Testament Studies, Dallas Seminary; Wayne A. Brindle, Associate Professor of Biblical Studies, Liberty University; Michael A. Eaton, Lecturer in Old Testament, Baptist Theological College of Southern Africa; and the late Robert Gordis of Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
