Book excerpt: This volume deals with the underlying structure of occult teaching for the present era and with those vast cosmic processes reproduced through all areas of life from universe to atom. A large section of the book gives a detailed exposition of Solar Fire, the Fire of Mind, since this is the dominant energy to be understood and controlled during this second solar system. A Treatise on Cosmic Fire provides a compact outline of a scheme of cosmology, philosophy and psychology, and serves as a basic reference and text book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Cosmology, Vol. 1 I. Tins Treatise will attempt to give an account of the fundamental nature of the universe, including man and society. It will not strive to cover all the boundaries of knowledge or to present all that is known of any one matter; rather, it will assume that history has furnished the main story, and it will endeavor only to clear up certain parts and to emphasize certain outlines in a way to bring the main features to more perfect view. The primary conceptions of physical and mental science will be given chief consideration. And this will be done with the main purpose of demonstrating that they may now be reduced to a single system of formulated knowledge most serviceable, in common, for all the sciences and for ethics, sociology, and religion. This task presents great difficulties, even in the style of writ ing it demands. It must take all sorts of readers into different regions of science, and make them familiar with details in ways difficult to most persons, though they seem unnecessarily element ary and tedious to each particular specialist. On the other hand, it must entice each specialist to go outside of his chosen domain and to interest himself in the summarizing of all departments of knowledge, consistently with one another, in ways he has, perhaps, grown to regard as futile for his particular work. Again, it must persuade the religious enthusiast that the path to be pursued is that in which his ardor may be most devoutly directed. From the outset, therefore, the author begs of all parties a serious patience worthy of the problem and of its fruits. Again, it must persuade the religious enthusiast that the path to be pursued is that in which his ardor may be most devoutly directed. From the outset, therefore, the author begs of all parties a serious patience worthy Of the problem and of its fruits. Such a work demands an introductory outline of the fields to be covered, of their present aspect, and Of the reasons requiring the reconsideration of them here proposed. N O philosophic thought is more hackneyed than that the uni verse is one and indivisible. As yet, however, it is a mere faith. NO system has yet gathered all the Spheres of learning under it in actual detail. On the contrary, the most striking feature Of the present map of the world's wisdom is that it still displays the two chief bodies of human knowledge in Open dis junction; in as distant and inhospitable relations as were the Eastern and Western Continents before the voyage of Columbus. I refer to the intellectual hemispheres of mental and of physical science. Some of the main hypotheses, upon which the business Of each now proceeds, are notoriously contradicted by the most substantial conclusions of the other. For example, the entire bulk of the physical sciences is conducted on the assumption that its world is spatial in ways that make that word inapplicable to the human mind; 1 while at the same time there is little like lihood, now, of finding a competent psychologist who does not incline to the belief that matter and mind are ultimately of one sort. Nor are there lacking other examples equally striking and more pertinent to the world's welfare and daily life. It is to these confusing and harmful antagonisms, constituting the classic strife between philosophy and science, idealism and realism, spirit and matter, since the beginning Of history, that this Treatise will bring peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976. This comprehensive study discusses in detail the philosophical, mathematical, physical, logical and theological aspects of our understanding of time and space. The text examines first the many different definitions of time that have been offered, beginning with some of the puzzles arising from our awareness of the passage of time and shows how time can be understood as the concomitant of consciousness. In considering time as the dimension of change, the author obtains a transcendental derivation of the concept of space, and shows why there has to be only one dimension of time and three of space, and why Kant was not altogether misguided in believing the space of our ordinary experience to be Euclidean. The concept of space-time is then discussed, including Lorentz transformations, and in an examination of the applications of tense logic the author discusses the traditional difficulties encountered in arguments for fatalism. In the final sections he discusses eternity and the beginning and end of the universe. The book includes sections on the continuity of space and time, on the directedness of time, on the differences between classical mechanics and the Special and General theories of relativity, on the measurement of time, on the apparent slowing down of moving clocks, and on time and probability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough introduction to modern ideas on cosmology and on the physical basis of the general theory of relativity, An Introduction to the Science of Cosmology explores various theories and ideas in big bang cosmology, providing insight into current problems. Assuming no previous knowledge of astronomy or cosmology, this book takes you beyond introductory texts to the point where you are able to read and appreciate the scientific literature, which is broadly referenced in the book. The authors present the standard big bang theory of the universe and provide an introduction to current inflationary cosmology, emphasizing the underlying physics without excessive technical detail. The book treats cosmological models without reliance on prior knowledge of general relativity, the necessary physics being introduced in the text as required. It also covers recent observational evidence pointing to an accelerating expansion of the universe. The first several chapters provide an introduction to the topics discussed later in the book. The next few chapters introduce relativistic cosmology and the classic observational tests. One chapter gives the main results of the hot big bang theory. Next, the book presents the inflationary model and discusses the problem of the origin of structure and the correspondingly more detailed tests of relativistic models. Finally, the book considers some general issues raised by expansion and isotropy. A reference section completes the work by listing essential formulae, symbols, and physical constants. Beyond the level of many elementary books on cosmology, An Introduction to the Science of Cosmology encompasses numerous recent developments and ideas in the area. It provides more detailed coverage than many other titles available, and the inclusion of problems at the end of each chapter aids in self study and makes the book suitable for taught courses.
