Download or read book A Treatise of Human Nature written by David Hume and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unpopular in its day, David Hume's sprawling, three-volume 'A Treatise of Human Nature' (1739-40) has withstood the test of time and had enormous impact on subsequent philosophical thought. Hume's comprehensive effort to form an observationally grounded study of human nature employs John Locke's empiric principles to construct a theory of knowledge from which to evaluate metaphysical ideas. A key to modern studies of eighteenth-century Western philosophy, the Treatise considers numerous classic philosophical issues, including causation, existence, freedom and necessity, and morality. Unabridged republication of the edition originally published by Oxford at the Clarendon Press, London, 1888.

Book excerpt: A Treatise of Human Nature Volume 1 By David Hume For nothing is more certain, than that despair has almost the same effect upon us with enjoyment, and that we are no sooner acquainted with the impossibility of satisfying any desire, than the desire itself vanishes. When we see, that we have arrived at the utmost extent of human reason, we sit down contented, though we be perfectly satisfied in the main of our ignorance, and perceive that we can give no reason for our most general and most refined principles, beside our experience of their reality; which is the reason of the mere vulgar, and what it required no study at first to have discovered for the most particular and most extraordinary phaenomenon. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Yet it is admitted that there is an idea of number not made up of impressions. exceed them. What consists of parts is distinguishable into them, and what is distinguishable is separable. But whatever we may imagine of the thing, the idea of a grain of sand is not distinguishable nor separable into twenty, much less into a thousand, ten thousand, or an infinito number of different ideas. 'Tis the same case with the impressions of the senses as with the ideas of the imagination. Pat a spot of ink upon paper, fix your eye upon that spot, and retire to such a distance that at last you lose sight of it; 'tis plain that the moment before it vanished the image or impression was perfectly indivisible. 'Tis not for want of rays of light striking on our eyes that the minute parts of distant bodies convey not any sensible impression; but because they are removed beyond that distance at which their impressions were reduced to a minimum, and were incapable of any further diminution. A microscope or telescope, which renders them visible, produces not any new rays of light, but only spreads those which always flowed from them; and by that means both gives parts to impressions, which to the naked eye appear simple and uncompounded, and advances to a minimum what was formerly imperceptible.'1 (Part ri. 1.) 266. In this passage it will be seen that Hume virtually yields the point as regards number. When he is told of the thousandth or ten thousandth part of a grain of sand he has 'a distinct idea of these numbers and of their different proportions, ' though to this idea no distinct 'image' corresponds; in other words, though the idea is not a copy of any impression. It is of such parts as parts of the grain of sand--as parts of a' compound impression...

This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Human Nature, in Its Physical, Intellectual, and Moral Relations: With an Attempt to Demonstrate the Order of Providence in the Three-Fold Constitution of Our Being The following Work is an attempt to lay down the more important conditions of our being; to trace their various relations, the laws which regulate them, and their first origin. Consciousness has been considered with reference to its three grand elements, and every thing has been enumerated that was calculated to throw any light on its complicated and most interesting phenomena. It appeared self-evident that certain physical, moral, and intellectual states, were more conducive to virtue and happiness than others; that there was a close connexion between them, and that the whole, might be successively elucidated, beginning with the most elementary, and ending with the most complex. It likewise seemed that to execute this; to shew the mutual dependance of these states, and the necessity of improving each, to secure the joint perfection of all, might be of some service to the cause of humanity: that religion and morality might be promoted by demonstrating, independent of other sanctions and considerations, that there was a natural bond of obligation tending to the maintenance of our well-being, which could not be infringed without the certain contingency of misery, evil, and disease. Our position on earth our expectations here and hereafter, and the detail of our various duties, are fully adequate to occupy the attention of the most zealous inquirer. It has not been thought requisite to attempt any formal demonstration of the being of a God, but it was conceived imperatively so, to enlarge on his boundless wisdom and power, and to dwell upon every practicable illustration of his Divine Providence. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Philosophical Treatise on the Nature and Constitution of Man, Vol. 1 As regards the various works which have been consulted during the progress of this treatise, the author feels that he ought to State as exactly as he can, the extent to which he has made use of the thoughts and labours of others in this mode, and the manner in which he has turned them to account. To avow that he owes nothing to these able and learned writers, would be doing gross injustice to them. To assert that for everything of value which is here propounded, he is indebted to them, would be doing still grosser injustice to himself. To have attempted a mere epitome of their Opinions, would have been to present a chaos of sentiments which must have appeared as contradictory in principle as they were perplexing, and even valueless, as a source of instruction. The writer has accordingly scrutinized elaborately their various theories, and has availed himself of them much in the same way as a judge turns to account the reasoning of the different advocates who address his court, and the several phases presented by the evidence: not adopting their opposite and inconsistent views and conclusions, nor being misled by their arguments; but from the sum total of the reasoning and facts adduced before him, combined with his own investigation and experience, endeavouring to arrive at such an opinion upon the whole of the circumstances submitted to his consideration, as the entire subject may appear to warrant; and pronouncing such a decision as will meet the merits of the case, and be in con formity with the principles and practice of the law which it is his duty to administer. What appeared to the author to constitute the cream or essence of the thoughts of these distinguished writers, he has extracted, and presented to the reader, as notes in the margin of this work; from which he may both Obtain instruction as regards the wisdom displayed, and also perceive the extent to which the author has availed himself of their ideas. On the one hand, it would have been presumptuous when treating on so important a subject, not to have inquired fully what the greatest minds, who have preceded him, thought on the same topic. On the other hand, it would have been dishonest to have taken advantage of their labours, by putting forth their sentiments and conclusions as his own.
