Book Synopsis Seduction, Surrender, and Transformation by : Karen J. Maroda
Download or read book Seduction, Surrender, and Transformation written by Karen J. Maroda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seduction, Surrender, and Transformation demonstrates how interpersonal psychoanalysis obliges analysts to engage their patients with genuine emotional responsiveness, so that not only the patient but the analyst too is open to ongoing transformation through the analytic experience. In so doing, the analyst moves from the position of an "interpreting observer" to that of an "active participant and facilitator" whose affective communications enable the patient to acquire basic self-trust along with self-knowledge. Drawing on the current literature on affect, Maroda argues that psychological change occurs through affect-laden interpersonal processes. Given that most patients in psychotherapy have problems with affect management, the completing of cycles of affective communication between therapist and patient becomes a vitally important aspect of the therapeutic enterprise. Through emotionally open responses to their patients and careful use of patient-prompted self-disclosures, analysts can facilitate affect regulation responsibly and constructively, with the emphasis always remaining on the patients' experience. Moments of mutual surrender - the honest emotional giving over of patient to analyst and analyst to patient - epitomize the emotionally intense interpersonal experiences that lead to enduring intrapsychic change. Maroda's work is profoundly personal. She does not hesitate to share with the reader how her own personality affects her thinking and her work. Indeed, she believes her theoretical and clinical preferences are emblematic of the way in which the analyst's subjectivity necessarily shapes theory choice and practice preferences in general. Seduction, Surrender, and Transfomation is not only a powerful brief for emotional honesty in the analytic relationship but also a model of the personal openness that, according to Maroda, psychoanalysis demands of all its practitioners.
Book Synopsis Substance and Seduction by : Stacey Schwartzkopf
Download or read book Substance and Seduction written by Stacey Schwartzkopf and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chocolate and sugar, alcohol and tobacco, peyote and hallucinogenic mushrooms—these seductive substances have been a nexus of desire for both pleasure and profit in Mesoamerica since colonial times. But how did these substances seduce? And when and how did they come to be desired and then demanded, even by those who had never encountered them before? The contributors to this volume explore these questions across a range of times, places, and peoples to discover how the individual pleasures of consumption were shaped by social, cultural, economic, and political forces. Focusing on ingestible substances as a group, which has not been done before in the scholarly literature, the chapters in Substance and Seduction trace three key links between colonization and commodification. First, as substances that were taken into the bodies of both colonizers and colonized, these foods and drugs participated in unexpected connections among sites of production and consumption; racial and ethnic categories; and free, forced, and enslaved labor regimes. Second, as commodities developed in the long transition from mercantile to modern capitalism, each substance in some way drew its enduring power from its ability to seduce: to stimulate bodies; to alter minds; to mark class, social, and ethnic boundaries; and to generate wealth. Finally, as objects of scholarly inquiry, each substance rewards interdisciplinary approaches that balance the considerations of pleasure and profit, materiality and morality, and culture and political economy.

Book Synopsis Passes, the Art of the Bullfight by :
Download or read book Passes, the Art of the Bullfight written by and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Passes: The Art of Bullfight, art photographer Ricardo Sanchez generously pays homage to Spain's best bullfighters. In page after page of spectacularly colorful and original photography he vividly captures the ballet of the pass. The bullfighter's subtle and precarious dance is revealed in the photographic blur of a speeding half-ton bull, dared and challenged by swirling and swooping capes, just at the critical moment that it passes mere inches from the matador. With an essay from Spain's leading authority and most respected bullfighting critic and an excerpt from Hemmingway's Death in the Afternoon, the work in Passes is poised to join that of legendary artists such as Francisco de Goya and painters Edouard Manet and Pablo Picasso in tribute to bullfighting and the ancient Spanish ritual of the corrida.
Book Synopsis Fashion: Seductive Play by : Eugen Fink
Download or read book Fashion: Seductive Play written by Eugen Fink and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-27 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Germany, 1969, Eugen Fink's Fashion: Seductive Play was published. This first English language edition, updated with an introduction by Stefano Marino and Giovanni Matteucci, makes available Fink's philosophical investigation into fashion to an English-speaking audience. One of the greatest figures in the phenomenological movement, Fink here investigates fashion at various philosophical levels - aesthetic, ethical, social - and in relationship to other forms of human culture, especially contemporary culture. Although there have been many transformations and changes in the world of fashion since the late 1960s, from prêt-à-porter to fast fashion, fashion's connection to both high culture and popular culture, and the new relationship between fashion and the advent of social media, Fink's insights allow wide-ranging and far-reaching inquiries into fashion's philosophical essence. Fink's extraordinary lucidity and his unique conceptual capacities have made his work crucial to the study of the philosophy of fashion today. His work, like that of Simmel's, Veblen's or Benjamin's, is as essential and important now as when it was first published.

Download or read book Seductive Forms written by Ros Ballaster and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-07-02 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historicist and feminist accounts of the `rise of the novel' have neglected the phenomenon of the professional woman writer in England prior to the advent of the sentimental novel in the 1740s. Seductive Forms explores the means by which the three leading Tory women novelists of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries challenged and reworked both contemporary gender ideologies and generic convention. The seduction plot provided Aphra Behn, Delarivier Manley, and Eliza Haywood with a vehicle for dramatizing their own appropriation of the `masculine' power of fiction-making. Seduction is employed in these fictions as a metaphor for both novelistic production (the seduction of the reader by the writer) and party political machination (the seduction of the public by the politician). This challenging and lively book also explores the debts early prose fiction owed to French seventeenth-century models of fiction-writing and argues that Behn, Manley, and Haywood succeed in producing a distinctively `English' and female `form' for the amatory novel.

Book Synopsis Seductive Resistance: The Poetry of Théophile Gautier by : Constance Gosselin Schick
Download or read book Seductive Resistance: The Poetry of Théophile Gautier written by Constance Gosselin Schick and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gautier's poetry merits an attentive reading which respects his own essential criterion of poeticity, namely, textuality. This is a poetry which puts on display its literariness, that is, its existence as cultural artifact. In so doing, however, it also puts on display the absence of and its resistance to whatever personal or real signified it would evoke or name. Its beauty and self-indulgent pleasure reveal their hollowness and inadequacy. Its chiseled, polished surface renders its borders or limits and its play unsatisfyingly and teasingly perceptible. Its very superficiality allows, invites and seduces the reader to go entre les lignes and perceive the mystery, not of what has been symbolically buried/unburied, concealed/revealed, but of the truly absent, the abîmes superficiels. Chapter 1, focusing on texts from the Poésies of 1830, studies the intextual repetition of Gautier's poetry, the citations, imitations and transpositions which make evident the poetry's displacement of the significant and the personal into aesthetic simulacra. Chapter 2 deals with the poems of Gautier's second collection, Albertus, and analyzes the use of allegory and of humor as further markers of textual substitution. The inherent lifelessness and illusoriness of the textual artifact is revealed in the poems of La Comédie de la Mort, the collection examined in chapter 3. Chapter 4 analyzes the so-called descriptive, referential poetry of España, and finds that the monde extérieur of Gautier's poetry functions to express an absence of self and is itself always shown to be other than the Other. The dimunition of the poetic effected in Emaux et Camées is the subject of chapter 5, and chapter 6 deals with the contextuality, the fetishism, and the eroticism revealed in a miscellany of poems - in particular the libertine poems - which do not figure in Gautier's five major collections. By short-circuiting significations and transforming them into seductive appearances, Gautier reveals himself to be the acknowledged maître of both Baudelaire and Mallarmé.
