Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of us have seen this - walking through those shabby lanes, smelling of sewage and garbage dump, snotty kids clad in tattered knickers playing barefoot in the cold cloudy afternoon, women trying to burn the damp twigs to prepare a bowl of rice outside the makeshift house made of tin shades or cardboards - but how often have we stopped by and tried to understand, why some of us have to live a life so rotten and filthy, while some of us are on the Forbes list of billionaires? Why, when there is so much talk about growth and development, a huge section of our society is living in a world of perpetual poverty? This bone-chilling narrative is not from a war-ravaged country or a refugee camp, it is a peacetime description of the unfortunate souls who, are at the bottom of the wealth pyramid. The book is themed around the prevalent corporate greed based on the philosophy which looks at the world purely as a marketplace, and the 'good business sense' that argues wealth maximisation of the shareholders is the sole purpose of the manager in a corporation. The author presents the current economic system, its genesis and its impact on the future of earth and its inhabitants in layman's language. The book is illustrated and a rather quick read. The author has successfully managed to do away with the jargons and has presented the subject in a lucid and impactful manner. It is interspersed with powerful quotes and illustrations to give you a sense of what he is talking about. The image of a (dead?) naked man, his belongings, that I and you call trash, lying around him in the cold winter morning, tells the horrific story of the chilling night that we might have spent in the warm cosy bed, lost in the glitters of some reality TV show. "But how low is the bottom of the pyramid? How low?" You don't have to read through the entire book to understand the imminence of this question, you just have to look at the images and you will get to know the answer for 'How low?' The author suggests that either the world will perish with all its inhabitants or a minuscule fraction of the super rich will flee the earth to settle on some distant planet to evolve into a new species (Homo machiavellius) leaving behind the less fortunate majority (Homo gaius) to be exploited further. The author draws a parallel between such a future and the past exploitation of the Indian sub-continent by the East India Company and plundering of India's economy to maximise its own wealth. You will be forced to think about who is responsible for the poverty that is so bizarrely and evidently spreading right under the glitters of showbiz culture that seems to have infected even the highest public offices and the ruthlessness with which the wealth and resources are being sucked up the pyramid and you will certainly hear these words echoing in your ears - Who is responsible for the present state of affairs?

Book excerpt: The book "Tightening Noose of Poverty" (ISBN-10: 1517533066 / ISBN-13: 978-1517533069) - available on Amazon - was very much liked by almost all of the readers. However, a concern was shown that the paperback edition of the book was out of the reach of an ordinary student, and thus, there was a need to come out with another edition which could be made affordable for the masses. Although the kindle edition was there to fulfill this need, we decided, that since till now, in many areas of the world, an e-book was not a feasible reading medium, and there were many readers - especially the senior ones - who were not very comfortable with e-book reading; it was essential to print a separate abridged title extracted from the original one, in as compact a form as possible, and to make it as much affordable as possible. In this abridged book, we have culled the table of pictures, illustrations and tables; the bibliography, the index, and almost all of the images; and have reduced the font size as well as line spacing, stuffed the quotations within the main chapters so as to avoid extra use of even a single folio, and have used white paper in place of the cream paper used in the original one. We have, however, maintained the original text and are sure that the book will succeed in conveying the message.

Book excerpt: A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year In August 1862, after suffering decades of hardship, broken treaties, and relentless encroachment on their land, the Dakota leader Little Crow reluctantly agreed that his people must go to war. After six weeks of fighting, the uprising was smashed, thousands of Indians were taken prisoner by the US army, and 303 Dakotas were sentenced to death. President Lincoln, embroiled in the most devastating period of the Civil War, personally intervened to save the lives of 265 of the condemned men, but in the end, 38 Dakota men would be hanged in the largest government-sanctioned execution in U.S. history. Writing with uncommon immediacy and insight, Scott W. Berg details these events within the larger context of the Civil War, the history of the Dakota people and the subsequent United States–Indian wars, and brings to life this overlooked but seminal moment in American history.

She writes an exhaustive lament for mothers of the "dark magicians," and revisits the devastating murder of Emmett Till. These dynamic sequences serve as a backdrop for present-day racial calamities and calls for resistance. Smith embraces elaborate and eloquent language— "her gorgeous fallen son a horrid hidden / rot. Her tiny hand starts crushing roses—one by one / by one she wrecks the casket’s spray. It’s how she / mourns—a mother, still, despite the roar of thorns"— as she sharpens her unerring focus on incidents of national mayhem and mourning. Smith envisions, reenvisions, and ultimately reinvents the role of witness with an incendiary fusion of forms, including prose poems, ghazals, sestinas, and sonnets. With poems impossible to turn away from, one of America’s most electrifying writers reveals what is frightening, and what is revelatory, about history.

Book excerpt: A witty, heartfelt novel that brilliantly evokes the confusions of adolescence and marks the arrival of an extraordinary young talent. Isidore Mazal is eleven years old, the youngest of six siblings living in a small French town. He doesn't quite fit in. Berenice, Aurore, and Leonard are on track to have doctorates by age twenty-four. Jeremie performs with a symphony, and Simone, older than Isidore by eighteen months, expects a great career as a novelist—she's already put Isidore to work on her biography. The only time they leave their rooms is to gather on the old, stained couch and dissect prime-time television dramas in light of Aristotle's Poetics. Isidore has never skipped a grade or written a dissertation. But he notices things the others don't, and asks questions they fear to ask. So when tragedy strikes the Mazal family, Isidore is the only one to recognize how everyone is struggling with their grief, and perhaps the only one who can help them—if he doesn't run away from home first. Isidore’s unstinting empathy, combined with his simmering anger, makes for a complex character study, in which the elegiac and comedic build toward a heartbreaking conclusion. With How to Behave in a Crowd, Camille Bordas immerses readers in the interior life of a boy puzzled by adulthood and beginning to realize that the adults around him are just as lost.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Pulling No Punches: Poetry of Resistance," poet William Gomes delivers a powerful and moving collection that gives voice to the struggles, triumphs, and unbreakable spirit of those living on the margins. With a keen eye for social commentary and a deep well of empathy, Gomes shines a light on the harsh realities faced by many, while also celebrating the resilience and courage of those who persist against the odds. Through poems like "Beyond Confinement" and "Voices Unheard," Gomes invites readers into the lives of individuals navigating a society that often overlooks or diminishes them. With every line, he captures the quiet struggles and everyday acts of courage that so often go unnoticed, giving voice to the unheard and affirming the dignity of every life. Other works, such as "Beneath the Sheen" and "The Gears of Indifference," serve as a searing indictment of the systems and attitudes that perpetuate inequality and injustice. Through these verses, Gomes challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths and join the fight for a more compassionate and inclusive world. Even in the darkest moments, threads of hope and defiance run through this collection. In "Seeds of Change" and "Unsilenced," Gomes reminds readers of the transformative power of solidarity and the indomitable nature of the human spirit. These poems are not just about resistance, but also about resilience, empowerment, and the unwavering belief that a better future is possible. Urgent, unflinching, and ultimately uplifting, "Pulling No Punches" is a deeply personal journey that reflects the author's own experiences and those of the communities he is a part of. It is a call to action, a plea for empathy, and a celebration of the strength and beauty of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Step into these pages with an open heart and a willingness to listen deeply. Let these poems be a mirror, a window, and a doorway - a mirror to reflect our shared humanity, a window into lives and experiences that may be different from your own, and a doorway to a world of greater understanding, compassion, and unity. "Pulling No Punches" is not just a collection of poetry, but a testament to the power of words to inspire change and to remind us of our shared humanity. It is a must-read for anyone who believes in the fight for a society where every voice is valued, and every life is affirmed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This well-researched, well-told story takes readers into a world of espionage, industrial ingenuity, and American resilience . . . a compelling history.” —Robert Whitaker, author of Anatomy of an Epidemic Silver Medal Winner of the Independent Publisher Book Award for History (World) In 1940, with German U-boats blockading all commerce across the Atlantic Ocean, a fireball at the Crown Cork and Seal factory lit the sky over Baltimore. Rumors of Nazi sabotage led to an FBI investigation and pulled an entire industry into the machinery of national security as America stood on the brink of war. In Cork Wars, David A. Taylor traces this fascinating story through the lives of three men and their families: Charles McManus, who ran Crown Cork and Seal, a company that manufactured everything from bottle caps to oil-tight gaskets for fighter planes; Frank DiCara, who watched the fire blazed at the factory and got a job at Crown just a few years later; and Melchor Marsa, who managed Crown Cork and Seal’s plants in Spain and Portugal—and was perfectly placed to be recruited as a spy. Drawing on in-depth interviews with surviving family members, personal collections, and recently declassified government records, Taylor weaves this by turns beautiful, dark, and outrageous narrative with the drama of a thriller. From the factory floor to the corner office, Cork Wars reflects shifts in our ideas of modernity, the environment, and the materials and norms of American life. World War II buffs—and anyone interested in a good yarn—will be gripped by this bold and frightening tale of a forgotten episode of American history. “An absorbing and illuminating read.” —Maury Klein, author of A Call to Arms
