Book excerpt: Intriguing and endlessly contentious ideas and images of apocalyptic measure come together in the book of Revelation. It is a rich and hermeneutically complicated Scripture that, unsurprisingly, has no universally accepted interpretation. Reading Revelation compares these four major approaches to Revelation by laying out the different interpretive translations provided by each school of thought in parallel columns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation is the last book in the canon of the New Testament, and its only apocalyptic document, though there are short apocalyptic passages in various places in the gospels and the epistles. This first of two volumes on Revelation offers systematic and thorough interpretation of the book of Revelation. Revelation brings together the worlds of heaven, earth and hell in a final confrontation between the forces of good and evil. Its characters and images are both real and symbolic, spiritual and material, and it is frequently difficult to know the difference between them. Revelation's cryptic nature has ensured that it would always be a source of controversy. This commentary focuses on the theological content, gleaning the best from both the classical and modern commentary traditions and showing the doctrinal development of Scriptural truths. Scholarship on the book of Revelation has nonetheless not only endured, but even captured the imagination of generations of Bible students, both professionals and laypeople alike. Through its focus on the message of the book through scholarly analysis, this International Theological Commentary reconnects to the ecclesial tradition of biblical commentary as an effort in ressourcement, though not slavish repetition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Book about Current Events in Light of Apocalyptic Trumpets Trumpets were signaling devices in ancient Israel, and a metaphorical and amazing message is hidden in them for the modern human being. The relationship between freedom and responsibility is a very current topic. Who has the authority to define the limits of freedom and responsibility? Which entity has the authority to decide who has the right to access freedoms? The forces of evil, including the Antichrist, aim to take the hold of this authority by deception. The great controversy between light and darkness concentrates on these issues, and it is a battle for our mindset and attitudes. Jesus Christ will have victory in the end. However, it is important to know the means of the hoax of Satan and the Antichrist, so that we would not be deceived. A global medical deception is part of the hoax. Liberty of conscience, not totalitarianism, is at the heart of God’s mindset and government. The interpretation of the trumpets has a long tradition. This book continues the tradition by concentrating on the fifth and the sixth trumpet. Often in Protestantism the events of the fifth and the sixth trumpet are either situated into the past (so called traditional interpretation in Adventism) or they are seen to reach until the present time. In this book, we unite the two views and think that the trumpets are repeated in history. We aim to let the Bible interpret itself. Both global deception and freedom of conscience are issues which are grounded on God’s Word. The book is a self-published work, and it contains 259 pages.

Ruether highlights women theologians' work to challenge the patriarchal paradigm of historical theology and to present redemption linked to the liberation of women. Ruether turns her attention to the situation of women globally and how the growing plurality of women's voices from multicultural and multireligious contexts articulates feminist liberation theology today." --Publisher description.

Book excerpt: The Sound of War is a heart-warming story about a group of Africans who have turned away from the vision their ancestors fought for. This shift becomes important when a new king ascends the throne of Umuisa. Metu, as the young king is called, throws culture and tradition to the wind. He refers to their culture as archaic, changes the system of government, and spurs a riot among his people. Furthermore, he declares his intention to demolish some sacred statues in the village square, which are symbols of their gods. Chioma, the oldest person in the land, wont let that happen. She gathers the villagers and tells them the actual story of how those monuments came to be. While telling the story, she tells them how Umuisa came into existence.

The Dog Star, Sirius, is tried - and found guilty - by his heavenly peers for a murder he did not commit. His sentence: to live on the planet Earth until he can carry out a seemingly impossible mission - the recovery of a deadly weapon known as the Zoi. The first lesson Sirius learns in his lowly earthly form is that humans have all the power. The second is that even though his young mistress loves him, she can't protect either of them. The third - and worst - is that someone out there will do anything to keep Sirius from finding the Zoi. Even if it means destroying Earth itself. This funny, heartbreaking, stunning book features an introduction by Neil Gaiman, an avid fan of Diana Wynne Jones.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are times of tremendous troubling social changes and never before seen large climatic weather events. It may be a time for the people of the earth to prepare their hearts and minds to worship and follow the Lord Jesus Christ. There are many prophetic signs from the Holy Bible showing us that the end of the ages approaches for the earth. This book is packed with biblical scriptures to show the people of world that the Lord Jesus Christ is Commander and Chief in a supernatural spiritual war going on all around the world, including in America, for which the Christian church needs to prepare. These spiritual warfare prayers are birthed in the Holy Ghost and fire of the Lord Jesus Christ to help the church fight the good fight of faith against the spiritual darkness that now circles the earth. It is time to enter your prayer closet and stand on the power of God’s living word, for the Lord Jesus Christ has spoken: It is written...“I have come not to bring peace to the earth but a sword” (Matt.10:34). Conflagrations, biblical flooding, fires, and droughts, it is ominously clear that humanity’s time is short. It is written...“Woe to the earth for Satan knows his time is short” (Rev.12:12). The Lord Jesus calls to His followers: there is a supernatural spiritual battle to fight for your soul, your family’s, and all those you love. These are tried-in-the-fire prayers for the war.

Book excerpt: In his captivating study of faith and class, John Hayes examines the ways folk religion in the early twentieth century allowed the South's poor--both white and black--to listen, borrow, and learn from each other about what it meant to live as Christians in a world of severe struggle. Beneath the well-documented religious forms of the New South, people caught in the region's poverty crafted a distinct folk Christianity that spoke from the margins of capitalist development, giving voice to modern phenomena like alienation and disenchantment. Through haunting songs of death, mystical tales of conversion, grassroots sacramental displays, and an ethic of neighborliness, impoverished folk Christians looked for the sacred in their midst and affirmed the value of this life in this world. From Tom Watson and W. E. B. Du Bois over a century ago to political commentators today, many have ruminated on how, despite material commonalities, the poor of the South have been perennially divided by racism. Through his excavation of a folk Christianity of the poor, which fused strands of African and European tradition into a new synthesis, John Hayes recovers a historically contingent moment of interracial exchange generated in hardship.

I was attacked by a vampire when I was only nineteen years old, an event that has haunted my waking dreams for as long as I can remember. For since I was changed; it seems I have known no peace. The dead whisper in my mind. Ive been plagued by thoughts of every soul I have encountered over my long unnatural lifespan. What I am is a monster, plain and simple. I have often wondered how it was that this curse came to be. I feel so alone, so lost. I struggle with feelings on a daily basis that just dont seem fair. I sometimes long for the peace that only death can bring. If it had not been for Neaveh, who is the closest thing to a mother I have ever known, I would have given up long ago! Little did I know that my angel would come and rescue me; that he would set all things right and teach me what it means to be free; and that I would find a love in him that would last an eternity. This was a love so strong that it was proclaimed unto the heavens and not even death could sever. My name is Aydin Sierra Fonteyn, and this is my story.

Book excerpt: Ibiam, a town in Nigeria, is facing some quick changes as a result of British presence and her colonial administration. The people of Ibiam relish one thing and that is their culture that is intertwined in their own religion. This heritage is guarded jealously to a point that some of the diehard adherents are ready to do anything to preserve it. With this present scenario a new religion comes into the scene. The people of Ibiam see this new religion as a threat to their culture that is already undergoing inexorable changes due to the colonial administration. At this juncture a battle for supremacy and preservation of the status quo begins to rear its head. Father Smith, the representative of this new religion, is now regarded as everything that has to do with the colonial administration and this new religion. The battle line is thus drawn. Ibiam is now ready to give this new block of development a fight with all the weapons in its arsenal. It’s a fight to finish! is a breathtaking story of how the people of Ibiam methodically and intricately spin the yarn that eventually entraps the colonial administration in an entangling web of embarrassment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies and articulates the emergence from the poetical subtext of six major English romantics of "the androgynous sublime", a mode that conflates the motif of psychic androgyny (traceable as far back as the Book of Genesis and Plato's Symposium) with the mode of sublimity, first discussed by Longinus and much debated from the eighteenth century onward. Frequently echoed by the romantic poets, Milton's description of the Holy Spirit's role in the creation of the world is androgynous. Since humane creativity mirrors divine creativity, it follows that the artist qua artist muct also be androgynous - that is, endowed with what Lyrical Ballads, calls "a more comprehensive soul" than is "supposed to be common among mankind". Characterized by a flexuous, limber style and an association with androgynous subject matter, the androgynous sublime subverts conventional notions of sublimity while offering a more comprehensive model with which to supplement, of non supplant, them. The methodology of this study is to present a "counter-deconstructive" reading of the text and, where applicable, designs of Blake, as well as the poetry of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, and Keats, seen from this somewhat novel but not ignoble perspective.
