Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thousand Miles of Wandering Along the Roman Wall, the Old Border Region, Lakeland, and Ribblesdale Iaway west can be discerned the glittering Solway, and on the further shore Dornock and Annan. Near by this place a raid, under the command of Sir Marmaduke Langdale and Lord Crosby, ended so disastrous to the invaders, for the few that escaped the fray with their lives were driven into the Solway and drowned; and the victorious Scots are said to have washed their swords in a well near Annan, since that battle day known as the Sword's Well. It was yonder on Solway Moss that James the Fifth of Scotland, and his army of fifteen thousand, was defeated by the English. This disaster broke the heart of the unfortunate James, for he died a few days after the battle. Still more to the north is Gretna, famed for the'celebration of runaway marriages, in Norman times in the possession of the Carlyles, lords of Annandale - in after centuries passing into the hands of the Johnstones. The ashes of many a scioh of this noble family lie mouldering in Gretna kirkyard. Beyond the banks of the little river Sark, Solway Moss, a dreary expanse of waste stretches to the sparkling Esk, on whose bank dwelt for centuries in the old debatable land the redoubtable Graemes, celebrated as the most renowned thieves on the Border. Further up the Esk is Cannobie Lea, across which the Graemes chased Young Lochinvar. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Before she could turn some one seized her in powerful arms. She was bent backward in a bearish embrace, so that she could neither struggle nor cry out. A dark face loomed over hers - came closer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major book explores commons, lands and rights of usage in common, traditional and customary practices, and the cultural nature of ‘landscapes’. Importantly, it addresses now critical matters of ‘cultural severance’ and largely unrecognized impacts on biodiversity and human societies, and implications for conservation, sustainability, and local economies. The book takes major case studies and perspectives from around the world, to address contemporary issues and challenges from historical and ecological perspectives. The book developed from major international conferences and collaborations over around fifteen years, culminating ‘The End of Tradition?’ in Sheffield, UK, 2010. The chapters are from individuals who are both academic researchers and practitioners. These ideas are now influencing bodies like the EU, UNESCO, and FAO, with recognition by major organisations and stakeholders, of the critical state of the environment consequent on cultural severance.

This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition brings to life Tobias Smollett's fourth novel, The Life and Adventures of Sir Launcelot Greaves. No annotated edition of the work existed before the second half of the twentieth century, and this comprehensive edition by Robert Folkenflik and Barbara Laning Fitzpatrick features more accurate text as well as scrupulous textual and critical information. Also included in the detailed introduction is a unique examination of Sir Launcelot Greaves, the first illustrated serial novel, in relation to the engravings by Anthony Walker. Sir Launcelot Greaves was a groundbreaking novel for Smollett. Published in British Magazine beginning in January 1760, it was the first major work by an English novelist to have been written specifically for serial publication. The novel, Smollett's shortest, differs stylistically from his previous works. The most attractive of his heroes, Sir Launcelot is virtuous and strange, and he is surrounded by a Smollettian menagerie whose various jargons are part of this novel's linguistic virtuosity and satire. Sir Launcelot's character is an English naturalization of Quixote. Although Sir Launcelot, unlike Quixote, is not the object of the author's satire, an idealistic madness is central to both characters. In Smollett's work the theme of madness is integral to the relationship between self and society as the work ponders both the constitution of madness and the alternatives to revenge. Sir Launcelot Greaves, though not Smollett's most heralded work, has not received the recognition it deserves. Folkenflik and Fitzpatrick present a definitive edition that will be appreciated by scholars and lovers of eighteenth-century literature.
