Book excerpt: Buoyancy-driven diffusion flames have been widely studied as a canonical fire configuration due to practical and scientific interests. Numerical investigations are conducted in this dissertation to improve understandings of interactions and couplings among turbulence, chemistry, soot, and multiphase radiation in buoyancy-driven diffusion flames. A high-fidelity modeling framework based on OpenFOAM-5.x, including detailed models for chemistry, radiation, and soot, is developed to improve the numerical accuracy and the computational efficiency with scale-resolved simulations. A Monte Carlo ray tracing (MCRT) based radiation solver coupled with line-by-line databases is developed to describe gas and soot radiation. Detailed and efficient radiation models for water mists are developed and coupled with the MCRT solver. An adaptive hybrid integration chemistry solver is implemented to speed up finite-rate chemistry integration. A semi-empirical two-equation soot model is incorporated to describe soot dynamics. The developed multi-physical platform is systematically verified through a series of combustion-radiation systems including a laminar ethylene diffusion flame and four laminar methane diffusion flames with good agreement. The developed platform is subsequently employed to investigate a laboratory-scale turbulent pool fire. Good agreement with experiments on radiative heat fluxes, and with theories on flame temperature, velocity and puffing frequency, is achieved. Detailed investigations on interactions among chemistry, soot, radiation, and turbulence are performed to gain physical insights on modeling chemistry, soot and radiation. Drawn on the database from high-fidelity pool fire simulations, three physics-based reduced-order models including a flamelet model considering re-absorption, an optimized two-step mechanism for chemistry, and a simple soot model based on the laminar smoke point concept, are developed. Encouraging results are obtained using the reduced-order models with considerable savings in computational cost. Finally, to investigate radiative attenuation of water mists in fire suppression, a radiation model considering anisotropic scattering for water mists is developed and validated against theoretical values, and is adopted to obtain benchmark results for development of reduced-order radiation models.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical models have been developed to address several important aspects of numerical modeling of turbulent combustion and flame spread. The developed models include a pyrolysis model for charring and non-charring solid materials, a fast narrow band radiation property evaluation model (FASTNB) and a turbulence model for buoyant flow and flame. In the pyrolysis model, a completely new algorithm has been proposed, where a moving dual mesh concept was developed and implemented. With this new concept, it provides proper spatial resolution for both temperature and density and automatically considers the regression of the surface of the non-charring solid material during its pyrolysis. It is simple, very efficient and applicable to both charring and non-charring materials. FASTNB speeds up significantly the evaluation of narrow band spectral radiation properties and thus provides a potential of applying narrow band model in numerical simulations of practical turbulent combustion. The turbulence model was developed to improve the consideration of buoyancy effect on turbulence and turbulent transport. It was found to be simple, promising and numerically stable. It has been tested against both plane and axisymmetric thermal plumes and an axisymmetric buoyant diffusion flame. When compared with the widely used standard buoyancy-modified k-e model, it gives significant improvement on numerical results. These developed models have been fully incorporated into CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code and coupled with other CFD sub-models, including the DT (Discrete Transfer) radiation model, EDC (Eddy Dissipation Concept) combustion model, flamelet combustion model, various soot models and transpired wall function. Comprehensive numerical simulations have been carried out to study soot formation and oxidation in turbulent buoyant diffusion flames, flame heat transfer and flame spread in fires. The gas temperature and velocity, soot volume fraction, wall surface temperature, char depth, radiation and convection heat fluxes, and heat release rate were calculated and compared with experimental measurements. In addition to provide comprehensive data for comparison, experiments on room corner fire growth were undertaken, where the gas temperature, solid fuel surface temperature, radiative heat flux, char depth and heat release rate were all measured.

Profiles of mean temperature, mean velocity, velocity fluctuations and total radiant heat flux were completed for methane flames, including careful characterization of burner exit conditions, in order to provide data for the evaluation of models of the process. Preliminary tests also provided mean temperature profiles for propane flames. Test conditions were chosen so that the flow was turbulent near the burner exit while effects of buoyancy were significant over most of the luminous portion of the flames. Both the present measurements and those of other investigators were compared with predictions of a k-E-g differential model, which included effects of buoyancy in the transport equations for turbulence quantities. The results indicated anisotropic effects in regions where buoyancy dominates flow properties suggesting the eventual desirability of multi-stress models for buoyant flames, although extensive recalibration of model constants from a limited data based would be required if this step were taken. Additional measurements and analysis of methane flames are in progress, in order to investigate the flame radiation properties and provide additional data on turbulence properties needed for model development.

Book excerpt: A theoretical and experimental study of the structure and radiation properties of turbulent buoyant diffusion flames is described. The results have application to modeling fires within structures, materials test methods, fire detection, and effects of materials on fire properties. The investigation consists of two phases, as follows: study of effects of turbulence/radiation interactions, considering the properties of nonluminous hydrogen/air diffusion flames; and study of extension of the laminar flamelet concept to soot properties needed to predict radiation from luminous acetylene/air and ethylene/air turbulent diffusion flames. Theory and experiment are considered in both phases of the investigation. Measurements in turbulent hydrogen/air diffusion flames yielded radiation fluctuation intensities of 20-110 percent, providing direct evidence of the importance of turbulence/radiation interactions. A stochastic analysis, based on the laminar flamelet concept, was developed which provided encouraging predictions of mean and fluctuating spectral radiation intensities (average discrepancies between predictions and measurements were roughly 30 percent), as well as temporal power spectral densities of radiation fluctuations. The temporal spectra exhibit energy-containing and inertial regions, very similar to other turbulence properties, although the rate of decay of the spectra with increasing frequency in the inertial region is somewhat greater than observed for scalar fluctuations. Measurements and predictions in the turbulent luminous flames concentrated on scalar properties (particularly soot volume fractions) in the overfire region. Predictions of scalar properties based on the laminar flamelet concept were very encouraging. Direct evaluation of soot volume fraction state relationships for the overfire region was hampered by effects of turbulent fluctuations and experimental uncertainties; nevertheless, within these limitations, soot volume fraction state relationships were nearly universal, and soot generation efficiencies nearly constant, for sufficiently long residence times. However, effects of finite-rate chemistry were noted for short residence time ethylene/air flames, causing spatial variations of soot generation efficiencies in the overfire region. For long residence times, present measurements of soot generation efficiencies were in reasonably good agreement with earlier findings for acetylene/air and ethylene/air diffusion flames.
