Especial pains have been taken to limit the vocabulary to words of com mon occurrence. That the pupil should develop a feeling for German construction and word arrangement is far more essen tial than that he should at the outset have an extensive vocab ulary at his command. The ability of the average pupil to assimilate a large number of new words with each successive lesson has frequently been overrated. It is not a radical textbook, yet I trust that ardent reformers will find in it abundant reading material and exercises thor oughly in harmony with the direct method. English sentences for translation have been provided, however, for the benefit of those teachers who wish to use them. They are chiefly: emphasis on reading and speaking; inductive treatment of grammar, with special attention to the verb; the basing of exercises on connected texts. To a great extent, the book is the outcome of the teaching and example of Professor Starr Willard Cutting, the author's friend and former teacher in the University of Chicago, to whom he desires to acknowledge his indebt edness and gratitude. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Classics, Vol. 10 IN editing the present volume, which is the tent/z of my Series of German Classics, I have, in general, adhered to the principle I adopted in the beginning; that is, to interpret the classical writings of Germany - to the best Of my ability - in the manner in which Greek and Latin Classics have been annotated for the use Of English students. The favourable reception which has been ac corded to my editions by my colleagues in Great Britain and in other countries amply justifies my proceeding, and relieves me from the task of dilating on the desir ability, nay necessity, of a thorough interpretation of the modern German Classics. It is now universally conceded that it is only by a careful study of them that German can become both a moral and an intellectual medium for the training Of the mind. At the same time it cannot be denied that, German being a living, and, so to say, a constantly growing language, the study of it has also a purely practical function. Bearing in mind these facts, I have endeavoured to annotate Schiller's jungfrau won Orleans from a literary as well as from a practical point Of view; so that my edition may be of interest to the scholar and serve as a guide to the student Of German as a spoken language. I have, therefore, explained all allu sions to authentic or legendary history, and I have also pointed out the instances in which Schiller deviated from history and from tradition. This process has enabled me to vindicate the poet indirectly against some charges brought forward by certain critics, who were unaware of all the sources at his command, and to what extent he considered it. Expedient to use them. I have said that my vindication was indirect. It is so because I have confined myself to giving my own explanations, and have abstained from entering into personal controversies, which would have been unsuitable to a book like the present. The arrangement of the syntax in the two books is identical, except where improvements in gradation and in simplification of statement were possible. They have, however, attempted to reduce the amount of theoretical grammar to those essentials which are necessary to the progress of the student. In the selection of vocabulary a first book should contain the more common words and phrases of everyday life, but in addition to this it should also offer at least an introduction to the more choice language of literature. This double aim has been the guiding principle in the selection of illustrative examples and reading material.
