Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Dye Chemistry: The Chemistry of Dye-Stuffs Professor von Gborqibvics' Tsehrbuch der Farbenchemie is so well known to chemists that no further introduction is needed, and the fact that it had reached its fourth edition in 1013, under the capable editorship of Professor Grandmougin, is sufficient evidence of its popularity abroad. Although the German edition is available to English-speaking readers, the renewed interest which the war has compelled all to take in the future development of the synthetic dye industry has made it desirable that an up-to-date English translation should be prepared for those whose lack of familiarity with German may render the reading of the original a somewhat tedious business and, moreover, in carrying out the translation of the work advantage has been taken of the opportunity to bring the subject-matter up to date and to make various alterations to the original text and arrangements where it scorned desirable. Fortunately, from the reviser's point of view, the last six years have witnessed few, if any, developments of outstanding importance in the scientific and technical branches of the dye industry, though vast changes have occurred in the commercial and economic sides, which cannot, however, be discussed here. The chief additions and alterations to be noted in the present edition are: - the Tables indicating the relationships of the various derivatives of Benzene, Toluene, Naphthalene and Anthracene, the chapters on Quinoline Dyes and Coal-tar, which have been rewritten, a new section dealing with the Anthocyans, the chapter on Anthraquinone dyes and Vat colours, an account of recent work on Carminic acid and Curcumin, and, lastly, a list of all the more important books connected with the chemistry of dyes. The translation is entirely new and, wherever it has seemed desirable, references to work published during the period 1013-20 have been inserted, whilst in most cases the British Patents are referred to, as well as the German. Book excerpt: What would life be like without color? Ever since one can think back, color has always accompanied mankind. Dyes - originally obtained exclusively from natural sources - are today also produced synthetically on a large scale and represent one of the very mature and traditional sectors of the chemical industry. The present reference work on Industrial Dyes provides a comprehensive review of the chemistry, properties and applications of the most important groups of industrial dyes, including optical brighteners. It also outlines the latest developments in the area of functional dyes. Renowned experts in their respective fields have contributed to the chapters on chemical chromophores, synthesis and application of the various dye classes, textile dyeing and non-textile dyeing. The book is aimed at all professionals who are involved in the synthesis, production, manufacture or application of dyes and will prove to be an indispensable guide to all chemists, engineers and technicians in dye science and industry.

The relationship between dye structure, color, and physical and chemical properties is examined in detail. Brief information is given on the applications of dye industry, in particular for dyeing polymeric materials. A short chapter also deals with the chemistry of intermediate products used in dye production. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: It is particularly appropriate that a volume concerned with dye chemistry should be included in the series Topics in Applied Chemistry. The development of the dye industry has been inexorably linked not only with the development of the chemical industry but also with organic chemistry itself since the middle of the last century. The position of dye chemistry at the forefront of chemical 1945 and more markedly so during the last advance has declined somewhat since 15 years, with pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry assuming an increasingly prominent position. Nevertheless, dye production still accounts for a significant portion of the business of most major chemical companies. The field of dye chemistry has stimulated the publication of many books over the years but surprisingly few have concentrated on or even included the practical aspects of dye synthesis and application. Thus, the present volume is designed to fulfill that need and provide the reader with an account of advances in dye chemistry, concentrating on more recent work and giving, in a single volume, synthetic detail and methods of application of the most important classes, information which will be invaluable to both student and research chemist alike.

Book excerpt: A natural or synthetic substance used to add a color or to change the color of something. Dyes are the coloring material that color commodities of our day to day use. Dyes are applied everywhere, from Plastic toys for children to that fabrics you wear, from food to wood; hardly there is any industry where dyes are not used commercially. A dye is a colored substance that has an affinity to the substrate to which it is being applied. It is an ionising and aromatic organic compounds. The dye is generally applied in an aqueous solution, and may require a mordant to improve the fastness of the dye on the fiber.Apart from this, Dye Intermediates also serve as an important raw materials for the Acid, Reactive and Direct Dyes. Increase in demand for dye intermediates in textile and extensive use of dye intermediates are some factors driving the dye intermediates market. This is prompting companies to increase production of dye intermediates. Additionally, easy availability of raw materials is anticipated to boost the demand for dye intermediates in the near future. The global dye intermediates market is witnessing technological advancements. Companies are constantly striving to develop new and better ways to manufacture dye intermediates. Development of new manufacturing processes of dye intermediates and applications is estimated to propel the dye intermediates market. However, volatility in prices of raw material is projected to inhibit the market. The major contents of the Book are Azo Dyes, Reactive Dyes, Anthraquinone Dyes, Acid Dyes, Basic Dyes, Sulfur Dyes, Cyanine Dyes, Sensitizing Dyes, Dye Intermediates, BIS Specifications, Photographs of Machinery With Suppliers Contact Detail, Plant Layout and Process Flow Chart & Diagram. A total guide to manufacturing and entrepreneurial success in one of today’s Dyes & Dye Intermediates industry. This book is one-stop guide to one of the fastest growing sectors of Dyes & Dye Intermediates industry, where opportunities abound for manufacturers, retailers, and entrepreneurs. This is the only complete handbook on Dyes & Dye Intermediates. It serves up a feast of how-to information, from concept to purchasing equipment.

It was felt that, as the figures referred usually to pre war conditions in Switzerland, and having regard to the present unsettled state of the exchanges and of production costs, no good purpose would be served by attempting to give the English equivalents which, in any case, would in all probability only be misleading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry of Dye-Stuffs Originally designed to form a section of a text book ou the Technology of the d104ile Fibres, the present work was afterwards modified into a separate volume, chiefly in order to render it more accessible to chemists interested in the chemistry of dye-stuffs rather than in the dyeing and cloth printing industries. This change led to a more exhaustive treatment of the dye-stuffs and the omission of all particulars relating to them practical application, the latter being' relegated to the companion volume dealing also with the improvement of the fibres by bleaching, etc. Only in the sections treating of natural dye-stuffs and mineral colours has more attention been paid to the technical side, because the pre sent volume is primarily designed for the dyer's chemist. The aim in view was to provide a textbook presenting to the student in as lucid and condensed a form as possible the extremely wide domain of the modern chemistry of dye-stuffs.
