Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text Book on Welding and Cutting Metals The oxy-acetylene welding and cutting torch has become so popular in the last few years, that almost every issue of the trade papers in any branch of work contains interesting accounts of new successes in the use of this powerful tool. The first application of the process, to commercial use, dates back to 1903, and its rapid growth in popularity is due to the ease and economy with which its intense heat 15 applied to any of the metal trades, to join two pieces by welding, or separate them by cutting without the stroke of a hammer. A notable example of the saving that may be effected by using this process is in the event of repairing a broken loco motive cylinder shown in Fig. 1. This cylinder had a piece broken out of the wall including a portion of the flange. Previous attempts to weld this piece in place by other methods had proven disastrous, and resulted in making the fracture larger. The oxy-acetylene process was then 'brought into use, and in less than a day's time a new piece was welded in as shown in Fig., 2. The cylinder was rebored, drilled, and the job finished without removing it from the locomotive. A great sawing in this case is credited to the fact that the loco motive was put back into service in a comparatively short time, and the repairs were made without dismantling. The durability of this work 1s illustrated in fact that this cylinder was welded July loth, 1910, and is still in successful operation. Not only has the process proved of the utmost importance in repair work, but its application has also been found to be of the greatest value in the manufacture of many articles. Much has been published relating to this process, but a great deal of that which has been placed on record in the past has been descriptive of odd jobs. It is, therefore, believed that the present volume, dealing in a more systematic manner with the principles and practice of the art of oxy-acetylene welding, will be of considerable value to those engaged in the metal trades. The information here presented on the subjects of oxy-acetylene welding and cutting has been mainly furnished by S. W. Miller, proprietor of the Rochester Welding Works, whose wide experience in the practical application of the process and whose success in the work vouch for the reliability of the information here placed on record. In welding the torch should not be directed upon a particular spot for any great length of time, but should move slightly so that the flame will come in contact with other parts in the immediate vicinity. This shouldnot be understood to mean that the torch should sweep a circle whose diameter is one or two inches. Most beginners make this mistake. The torch should be moved not more than 1/4. or 5/16 of an inch at a time for average work--say %" or 1/2" in thickness. A circular motion for metal of this thickness is not essential, but it is well to acquire it. For sheet metal work this circular movement is very desirable, producing a very smooth and pretty weld. However, there are some that prefer an oscillatory movement, the torch being pushed like a pendulum from one side of the sheet to the other while advancing in a forward.direction. So far we have not referred to the welding rod. It should be held in the free hand. Instead of using a straight rod, it will be found more convenient for the welder to use a rod having an angle of 90 degrees. In steel this is formed by simply bending over 3 or 4 inches of the end and continuing to do this as the rod is used up. For cast iron, we hold the end of one rod in the middle of another and "tack" the two with the torch. The size of the welding rod is important and should be proportional to the thickness of the metal welded. Most beginners make the fatal mistake of not getting the metal to be welded hot enough before adding the.filler rod. It is a good plan in beginning a weld to forget that you have a filler rod. Get the casting hot and then start the metal to flowing together at the bottom of the bevel. Not until then should the filler be used. The...
