Book excerpt: Excerpt from The General Principles of Chemical Engineering Design The chemical engineer is frequently described in terms of opprobrium by both the chemist on the one hand and the engineer on the other, and it is sometimes stated that the chemical engineer when in the company of chemists is an engineer, and when in the company of engineers is a chemist. This observation is not sur prising, but it simply serves to show that neither the engineer on the one hand nor the chemist on the other understand the scope of chemical engineering, and whilst it is Often said that the chemist and the engineer Speak in different languages, it might also be stated that the chemical engineer has still another mode of expression. Book excerpt: Chemical Engineering Design, Second Edition, deals with the application of chemical engineering principles to the design of chemical processes and equipment. Revised throughout, this edition has been specifically developed for the U.S. market. It provides the latest US codes and standards, including API, ASME and ISA design codes and ANSI standards. It contains new discussions of conceptual plant design, flowsheet development, and revamp design; extended coverage of capital cost estimation, process costing, and economics; and new chapters on equipment selection, reactor design, and solids handling processes. A rigorous pedagogy assists learning, with detailed worked examples, end of chapter exercises, plus supporting data, and Excel spreadsheet calculations, plus over 150 Patent References for downloading from the companion website. Extensive instructor resources, including 1170 lecture slides and a fully worked solutions manual are available to adopting instructors. This text is designed for chemical and biochemical engineering students (senior undergraduate year, plus appropriate for capstone design courses where taken, plus graduates) and lecturers/tutors, and professionals in industry (chemical process, biochemical, pharmaceutical, petrochemical sectors). New to this edition: Revised organization into Part I: Process Design, and Part II: Plant Design. The broad themes of Part I are flowsheet development, economic analysis, safety and environmental impact and optimization. Part II contains chapters on equipment design and selection that can be used as supplements to a lecture course or as essential references for students or practicing engineers working on design projects. New discussion of conceptual plant design, flowsheet development and revamp design Significantly increased coverage of capital cost estimation, process costing and economics New chapters on equipment selection, reactor design and solids handling processes New sections on fermentation, adsorption, membrane separations, ion exchange and chromatography Increased coverage of batch processing, food, pharmaceutical and biological processes All equipment chapters in Part II revised and updated with current information Updated throughout for latest US codes and standards, including API, ASME and ISA design codes and ANSI standards Additional worked examples and homework problems The most complete and up to date coverage of equipment selection 108 realistic commercial design projects from diverse industries A rigorous pedagogy assists learning, with detailed worked examples, end of chapter exercises, plus supporting data and Excel spreadsheet calculations plus over 150 Patent References, for downloading from the companion website Extensive instructor resources: 1170 lecture slides plus fully worked solutions manual available to adopting instructors

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Chemistry for Engineering Students Much of the work in this book is quantitative, and the student is encouraged throughout, to check the quality of his work by weighing the materials used, and the products into which these materials may be converted. For these weighings the balance is made use of, and its importance in chemical work demands a few explanatory remarks concerning the principle on which it works and the manner Of using it. The mechanical principles underlying the construction of the balance cannot be discussed here in full, and the worker is referred to text-books on physics for a detailed description of a delicate balance. Chemistry is one of the most interesting and educative of the sciences, and probably stands alone in that it is practical in the true sense of the word, for many of the operations carried out in the school laboratory are identical in method with, and on the same scale as, similar operations in industry. Previous to the war, except in the case of our great colleges, chemistry had been almost completely banned from the curriculum, owing mainly to the travesty of the subject that was taught for the purposes of passing stupid examinations set by charlatan educationists. Although the evil they did still lives, there are not wanting signs of a new and healthy growth of interest in this universally operating science. The author has to thank the several manufacturers for their ready assistance in the preparation of much that is in the book, and F. E. Palmer, Esq., for the execution and revision of various diagrams. By pointing out errors and suggesting improvements those who know will be rendering a service to those who are willing to learn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Chemical Engineering, Vol. 2 of 2: Prepared by a Staff of Specialists Before proceeding to outline briefly the various heating methods employed in bringing about high temperature melting or reactions, we shall refer in a few words to the subject Of refractories for high-melting-point containers. High-temperature Refractories - Our choice of materials is very limited especially for temperature work in excess of 2,000c. Of the various refractories readily obtainable, lime, magnesia and alumina are the most serviceable basic ones at temperatures up to about The purer these oxides the higher their melting points. In laboratory tests thoria crucibles have given very satis factory results at temperatures as high as 2,400c. Alth'ough pure tungsten melts at crucibles made from this metal, unless constructed with very heavy walls, show marked tendency to collapse at about 2,800c. In those cases where carbon does not readily combine with the substance to be heated, commercially pure graphite crucibles or supports are serviceable up to tempera tures Of about 3,000c. The life Of these graphite crucibles at these elevated temperatures is however comparatively short since the amorphous carbon binder. Used in the manufacture Of the crucible rapidly loses its binding qualities as the graphitization temperature is approached. In a book of this scope, lengthy descriptions of plant and of processes which differ from each other merely in detail would be out of place. For this reason, only such processes are described as are typical of the class to which they belong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
