Book excerpt: This research created a taxonomy for sustainability in highway construction (SHCTaxo), which is comprised of approximately 1000 concepts, in order to support a semantic collaborative environment in construction industry. As part of the e-COGNOS taxonomy, SHCTaxo inherited its skeleton and classified the concepts related to sustainable highway construction into eight main domains: Actor, Process, Product, Resource, Constraints, Mechanism, Basic Concepts and Technical Domain. Object-models for Natural Environmental, Social and Economic Sustainability Systems have been developed using UML. To evaluate the effectiveness of the SHCTaxo project, a validation survey with eight experts from academia and industry, and a test of SHCTaxo on a sample document were conducted, which demonstrate that this taxonomy is easy to navigate, effectively classified and representative in general.

Book excerpt: A programmatic approach to sustainable materials procurement in highway construction may be better than one-off attempts. For now, there is little guidance on procuring sustainability in highway construction and sustainability is not as important as cost or schedule. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Web-Only Document 262: Sustainable Highway Construction describes the research process and outcomes used to develop NCHRP Research Report 916: Sustainable Highway Construction Guidebook and a presentation that accompanies that Guidebook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the evolution and current state of corporate social responsibility (CSR), using a five-stage maturity model: defensive, charitable, promotional, strategic and transformative CSR. The first four stages are dubbed CSR 1.0 and characterise most current CSR practice, while the fifth stage is named CSR 2.0 (also transformative or systemic CSR) and describes emergent and future CSR practices. Reasons are given why CSR 1.0 approaches have failed to have any significant impact on the most serious global social, environmental and ethical challenges. The emergent CSR 2.0 will then be explored in detail by elaborating on five principles underlying the new approach, including: creativity, scalability, responsiveness, glocality and circularity. A four-part DNA Model is also introduced, covering value creation, good governance, societal contribution and ecological integrity, which provides the basis for defining and measuring CSR 2.0. Finally, a 70-question CSR 2.0 self-assessment diagnostic tool developed by the author is presented, with sample data to show how the tool can be used for future research and practitioner application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent optimism and global initiatives, the implementation of corporate sustainability programs has been slow at best, with less than a third of global companies having developed a clear business case for their approach to sustainability. Presenting numerous award-winning cases and examples from companies such as Unilever, Patagonia, Tumi, DSM and Umicore alongside original ideas based upon 20 years of consulting experience, this book reveals how to design and implement a stronger sense of focus and move sustainability programs forward. This proven combination of purpose, direction and speed is dubbed “Vectoring”. Based upon practitioner cases and data analysis from the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Vectoring offers a plain-spoken framework to identify the relative position of companies compared to their peers. The framework and its 4 archetypes deliver insights for practitioners to locate inhibitors and overcome them by providing practical suggestions for process improvements. This includes designing and executing new sustainability programs, embedding the SDGs within company strategy and assessing the impact of sustainability programs on competitiveness and valuation. Offering directions for CFOs to shift companies from integrated reporting to integrated thinking in order to accelerate their sustainability programs, Winning Sustainability Strategies shows how to achieve purpose with profit and how to do well by doing good.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a FULL-size (8.5" x 11") current edition of The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) which represents a continuing cooperative effort among Statistics Canada, Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI), and the Economic Classification Policy Committee (ECPC) of the United States, acting on behalf of the Office of Management and Budget, to create and maintain a common industry classification system. This jointly updated the system of classification of economic activities that makes the industrial statistics produced in the three countries comparable. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) revision for 2022 went into effect for reference year 2022 in Canada and the United States, and 2023 in Mexico. NAICS was originally developed to provide a consistent framework for the collection, analysis, and dissemination of industrial statistics used by government policy analysts, by academics and researchers, by the business community, and by the public. Revisions for 2022 were made to account for our rapidly changing economies. Classifications serve as a lens through which to view the data they classify. NAICS was developed in accordance with a single principle of aggregation, the principle that producing units that use similar production processes should be grouped together. Though NAICS differs from other industry classification systems, the three countries continue to strive to create industries that do not cross two digit Division boundaries of the United Nations' International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC). The actual classification reveals only the tip of the work carried out by dedicated staff from INEGI, Statistics Canada, and U.S. statistical agencies. It is through their efforts, painstaking analysis, and spirit of accommodation that NAICS serves as a harmonized international classification of economic activities in North America.
