Book excerpt: Ants belonging to the genus Gnamptogenys are important and diverse predators in the forests of the tropics of the Americas, Southeast Asia and Australasia. The recent rapid accumulation of these ants in collections rendered the last revision obsolete, raising the number of known species from about 80 to over a 120 species worldwide. The present study recognizes 49 Old World species, almost half of them new, distributed among 5 species groups. They are present in many entomological collections as the large size of some species and their conspicuousness has caught the attention of even general collectors. They figure increasingly in studies of diversity and ecology due to aspects of their biology such as predatory specialization or their reproduction which includes proper queens in some species and worker reproduction in other species. While most species are ground nesters in forests, some are arboreal and others are subterranean. This revision covers all the Old World species and proposes phylogenetic relations among the different species groups. The identification of the species is possible with aid of well-illustrated keys for workers and queens. The results of working with the keys can be rapidly confirmed by consulting the diagnosis that accompanies each species account, or the full description if need be. The phylogenetic analysis uses a valuable series of internal morphological characters previously unconsidered in ant systematics. Detailed distribution data is also included for each species. This work will be valuable for those studying insect diversity and ecology of forests in Southeast Asia and Australasia. Their diverse biology and relative large size of many species make these ants attractive subjects for comparative studies and this reference should open the door for further studies.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to encourage and facilitate focused research and provide a forum for scholarly exchange about the status of Mayfly and Stonefly science. Professor John Brittain, whose research is focused on freshwater entomology, especially egg development and life cycle strategies of Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera, presents a chapter reflecting on the quality of mayflies as good indicators of global warming and the quality of streams and lakes. Professor Emeritus Andrew Sheldon, whose interests have encompassed community and population ecology of aquatic animals over a span of more than 40 years, especially insects and fishes, explores topics of Scale and Hierarchy and the Ecology of Plecoptera, discussing how studies emphasizing scale and perspective reveal importance of stoneflies to ecosystems. Other topics cover a broad base of disciplines including morphology, physiology, phylogeny, taxonomy, ecology and conservation. The chapters have been compiled into three sections for this volume: Ecology, Zoogeography and Systematics.

Book excerpt: Comprising a substantial part of living biomass on earth, ants are integral to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. More than 12,000 species have been described to date, and it is estimated that perhaps as many still await classification. Ant Ecology explores key ecological issues and new developments in myrmecology across a range of scales. The book begins with a global perspective on species diversity in time and space and explores interactions at the community level before describing the population ecology of these social insects. The final section covers the recent ecological phenomenon of invasive ants: how they move across the globe, invade, affect ecosystems, and are managed by humans. Each chapter links ant ecology to broader ecological principles, provides a succinct summary, and discusses future research directions. Practical aspects of myrmecology, applications of ant ecology, debates, and novel discoveries are highlighted in text boxes throughout the volume. The book concludes with a synthesis of the current state of the field and a look at exciting future research directions. The extensive reference list and full glossary are invaluable for researchers, and those new to the field.

This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ant genus Mystrium in the Malagasy region is revised and six new species are described from Madagascar and its surrounding islands. The discovery of the division of females into major and minor forms was the key to solving this omplicated taxonomic puzzle. We found that in some species of Mystrium, major or minor workers develop as reproductives. In Mystrium, morphological comparison among individuals from the same phenotype, not from their reproductive or functional role is important. Here we propose a new taxonomic framework for interesting and mysterious genus. All species are reclassified into three subgroups based on the reproductive function, and innovative pictorial keys to the species for all castes and sexes are developed. The associations between existing names and males are reexamined, and males of eight of the ten Malagasy species are described or redescribed.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I report the results of the first detailed phylogenetic study of the ant subfamily Ponerinae, a diverse lineage whose properties make it an attractive model system for investigating social and ecological evolution in ants. Molecular sequence data were obtained from seven nuclear genes for 86 ponerine taxa, representing all three ponerine tribes, 22 of the 28 currently recognized genera, and 14 of the 18 informal subgenera ofPachycondyla, a genus strongly suspected to be non-monophyletic. Divergence dates, historical biogeography, and the origin of reproduction by gamergate workers were estimated on the inferred phylogeny. The most important results of this study include: (1) the monophyly of Ponerinae; (2) the paraphyly of Ponerini; (3) the extensive non-monophyly ofPachycondyla; (4) a rapid basal radiation in Ponerini; (5) resolution of many deeper relationships within Ponerini; (6) a rapid and rich basal radiation in theOdontomachusgroup; (7) an origin for Ponerinae in the upper Cretaceous, with a major burst of diversification near the K/T boundary; (8) a history of rich and continual ponerine diversification during the Cenozoic; (9) a history of regionalized radiations and frequent faunal exchange between major biogeographic provinces; and (10) support for multiple origins of gamergates in Ponerinae. Ponerine taxonomic classification is revised to reflect both these phylogenetic results and a reappraisal of ponerine morphological diversity. The monogeneric tribe Thaumatomyrmecini is newly synonymized under Ponerini, and the diverse genusPachycondylais fragmented into 15 genera, largely along the lines of its junior synonyms, though two new genera are erected:Buniapone(gen. nov.) andMayaponera(gen. nov.). Some junior synonyms ofPachycondylaare transferred to junior synonym status under other genera:Wadeuraas a junior synonym ofCryptopone(syn. nov.), Xiphopeltaas a junior synonym ofPseudoponera(syn. nov.), and bothTermitoponeandSyntermitoponeas junior synonyms ofNeoponera(syn. nov.). Molecular and morphological justifications for these taxonomic changes are given alongside discussions of phylogenetic relationships. Keys to the world genera of Ponerinae are provided, and morphological diagnoses and species lists are given for each genus. Finally, the available information on ponerine ecology and behavior is reviewed and synthesized.

Book excerpt: This large work on the ant genera of the Philippines improves our understanding of the amazing biodiversity of the archipelago. Twelve genera, including 3 undescribed, are recorded from the country for the first time for a total of 92 genera. The simplified keys will allow students to identify ants to the generic level. In addition, the species list has more than doubled to 474 valid names since Baltazar (1966). The authors hope to spur interest in the study of ants in the Philippines since the ant diversity of many islands is still largely unexplored.

Book excerpt: The tribal and generic classification of the diverse ant subfamily Ponerinae (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) is revised to reflect recent molecular phylogenetic information and a reappraisal of ponerine morphological diversity. The monogeneric tribe Thaumatomyrmecini (Thaumatomyrmex) is newly synonymized under Ponerini (syn. nov.), and the diverse genus Pachycondyla is fragmented into 19 genera, largely along the lines of its junior synonyms: Bothroponera, Brachyponera (gen. rev.), Ectomomyrmex (gen. rev.), Euponera (gen. rev.), Hagensia (gen. rev.), Megaponera (gen. rev.), Mesoponera (gen. rev.), Neoponera (gen. rev.), Ophthalmopone (gen. rev.), Pachycondyla, Paltothyreus (gen. rev.), Pseudoneoponera (gen. rev.), Pseudoponera (gen. rev.), and 6 new genera: Austroponera (gen. nov.), Buniapone (gen. nov.), Fisheropone (gen. nov.), Mayaponera (gen. nov.), Parvaponera (gen. nov.) and Rasopone (gen. nov.). Some junior synonyms of Pachycondyla are transferred to junior synonym status under other genera: Wadeura as a junior synonym of Cryptopone (syn. nov.), and both Termitopone and Syntermitopone as junior synonyms of Neoponera (syn. nov.). A new genus, Iroponera (gen. nov.), based on the new species Iroponera odax (sp. nov.), is described from Australia.
