Book excerpt: This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Edition? includes a glossary and reader's notes to help the modern reader contend with Dickens's complex approach to the human condition.Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities remains one of Western literature's most powerful stories of sacrificial love, redemption, and the devastation spread by obsessive justice. Having fled Paris for the relative safety and security of London, Dr. Manette, his daughter Lucie, and Charles Darnay are irresistibly lured into a whirlwind of events that threaten to shatter their lives'until a hopeless drunkard remembers the promise he once made to the only woman he ever loved. Dickens originally published A Tale of Two Cities in weekly installments, ensuring that his readers would return to read each new segment. The collected chapters have continued to excite and move readers for over a century.

Book excerpt: When a French doctor is imprisoned for eighteen years, he is released and united with his daughter, whom he has never met. The story of their life in London, and the conflict between her husband and the people who imprisoned her father, bring back ghosts from the past. Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities is known for its opening sentence, but the novel raises questions that explore income inequality, globalization, and the fate of civil rights when a government dissolves, topics we still grapple with today. This volume explores the life and work of Charles Dickens, focusing particularly on the theme of class conflict in the novel, and includes viewpoints on class conflict and income inequality in the present day, including the role that technology plays in increasing income inequality and class conflict, and the generational nature of class conflict.

Book excerpt: A tale of two cities is the true story of our tenure of the City Pub, its history and the characters that crossed its doorway. Followed by a dip into the smorgasbord of Manchester's glorious past, from the clubs and pubs that have faded into history. To the buildings and places lost in the passage of time. With contemporary news paper cuttings of events and the people that helped shape the city of Manchester. I hope you enjoy the tale of two cities as much as I have in compiling it.

Many of America's most important moments and issues, such as wars, scandals, election campaigns, September 11, 2001, have been defined by oratory. Here, over 50 essays cover a substantial and interesting group of major American social, political, economic, and cultural figures from the 1960s to the present. Each entry explains the biographical forces that shaped a speaker and his or her rhetorical approach, focuses mainly on a discussion of the orator's major speeches within the context of historical events, and concludes with an appraisal of the speaker and his or her contribution to American political and social life. All entries incorporate chronologies of major speeches, bibliographies including primary sources, biographies, and critical studies and archival collections or Web sites appropriate for student research. Entries include high profile individuals such as: John D. Ashcroft, Elizabeth Dole, Jerry Falwell, Anita Hill, Ralph Nader, Ronald Reagan, Janet Reno, Gloria Steinem, Malcolm X; and many others. Excerpts of major speeches and sidebars complement the text. Ideal for researchers and students in public speaking classes, American history classes, American politics classes, contemporary public address classes, and rhetorical theory/criticism classes.

Book excerpt: A Tale of Two Cities (1859) is a novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. With well over 200 million copies sold, it ranks amongst the most famous works in the history of literary fiction. The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralised by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several characters through these events. The 45-chapter novel was published in 31 weekly instalments in Dickens's new literary periodical titled All the Year Round. From April 1859 to November 1859, Dickens also republished the chapters as eight monthly sections in green covers. All but three of Dickens's previous novels had appeared only as monthly instalments. The first weekly instalment of A Tale of Two Cities ran in the first issue of All the Year Round on 30 April 1859. The last ran thirty weeks later, on 26 November.
