Book Synopsis Adrenergic Activators and Inhibitors by :
Download or read book Adrenergic Activators and Inhibitors written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not much more than a decade has passed since the appearance of the outstanding handbook, Catecholamines, edited by BLASCHKO and MUSCHOLL, in the series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology. However, this extremely well organized volume dealt mainly with the origin, molecular actions, and fate of the naturally occuring catecholamines. It was felt that a separate volume should be dedicated to the remarkable and exciting progress made in the field of agents influencing the adrenergic system, both in physiologic and pharmacologic respect. The editor of the present volume considers himself lucky to have been able to persuade a number of eminent specialists to collaborate. The main concept of the present handbook is a systematic approach to the various effects of adrenergic activators and inhibitors starting with the chemistry and structure actitivity relationship, followed by the evaluation of adrenergic activators and inhibitors, and discussing their mode of action. The most voluminous part is the chapter dealing with the systemic pharma cology of these agents analyzing the effects on the central nervous system, on the autonomic nervous system, on the cardiovascular, the respiratory, the digestive, the endocrine system, on the skeletal muscle, and on metabolism. Kinetics and bio transformation, further toxic effects are discussed in the following chapters. A special chapter on clinical features concludes the monograph.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commentaries in the Neurosciences is a compilation of the commentaries segment featured in the Neuroscience journal. This book, however, does not provide a comprehensive account of all fields in neuroscience, but rather articles that highlight developments during the past years. The topics covered include chemistry and dynamics of neurotransmitter storage particles; release of central and peripheral neurotransmitters; and transmitters in the enteric nervous system. This book also discusses the properties of neuroreceptors; chemistry and connections of the cerebral cortex; and intracellular recording and ionic transmembrane currents. This text explains as well the invertebrate nervous systems; functions of the nervous system including neuro- and psychopharmacology; and the mind-body problem. This book will be of use not only to research workers interested in keeping updated with developments in different areas of the neurosciences, but also to advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are studying the nervous system.

The book presents papers on the regulation of the gonadotropins in primates, their neutralization by specific antibodies, and their role in oocyte maturation. The text also includes papers on the enzymatic interconversion of estrogens and on the concept of the mechanism of steroid hormone action. Papers on the thermogenic action of thyroid hormone related to active sodium transport are also considered. The book further tackles papers on the structure, heterogeneity, and activity of many of the lesser known hormones or hormone-like substances, such as the somatomedins A, B, and C, the epidermal growth factor, the insect hormones, parathyroid hormone, 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol, and prostaglandins. Endocrinologists and physiologists will find the text invaluable.
