Book Synopsis Plants and Vegetation by : Paul Keddy
Download or read book Plants and Vegetation written by Paul Keddy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-07 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants make up 99.9 percent of the world's living matter, provide food and shelter, and control the Earth's climate. The study of plant ecology is therefore essential to understanding the biological functions and processes of the biosphere. This vibrant introductory textbook integrates important classical themes with recent ideas, models and data. The book begins with the origin of plants and their role in creating the biosphere as the context for discussing plant functional types and evolutionary patterns. The coverage continues logically through the exploration of causation with chapters, amongst others, on resources, stress, competition, predation, and mutualism. The book concludes with a chapter on conservation, addressing the concern that as many as one-third of all plant species are at risk of extinction. Each chapter is enriched with striking and unusual examples of plants (e.g., stone plants, carnivorous plants) and plant habitats (e.g., isolated tropical tepui, arctic cliffs). Paul Keddy writes in a lively and thought-provoking style which will appeal to students at all levels.

Book Synopsis Methane and Climate Change by : Dave Reay
Download or read book Methane and Climate Change written by Dave Reay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and is estimated to be responsible for approximately one-fifth of man-made global warming. Per kilogram, it is 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide over a 100-year time horizon -- and global warming is likely to enhance methane release from a number of sources. Current natural and man-made sources include many where methane-producing micro-organisms can thrive in anaerobic conditions, particularly ruminant livestock, rice cultivation, landfill, wastewater, wetlands and marine sediments. This timely and authoritative book provides the only comprehensive and balanced overview of our current knowledge of sources of methane and how these might be controlled to limit future climate change. It describes how methane is derived from the anaerobic metabolism of micro-organisms, whether in wetlands or rice fields, manure, landfill or wastewater, or the digestive systems of cattle and other ruminant animals. It highlights how sources of methane might themselves be affected by climate change. It is shown how numerous point sources of methane have the potential to be more easily addressed than sources of carbon dioxide and therefore contribute significantly to climate change mitigation in the 21st century.

Download or read book Immersion written by Abbie Gascho Landis and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abbie Gascho Landis brings readers to a hotbed of mussel diversity, the American Southeast, to seek mussels where they eat, procreate, and, too often, perish. Accompanied often by her husband, a mussel scientist, and her young children, she learned to see mussels on the creekbed, to tell a spectaclecase from a pigtoe, and to worry what vanishing mussels--70 percent of North American species are imperiled--will mean for humans and wildlife alike. Landis shares this journey, traveling from perilous river surveys to dry streambeds and into laboratories where endangered mussels are raised one precious life at a time. Mussels have much to teach us about the health of our watersheds if we step into the creek and take a closer look at their lives. In the tradition of writers like Terry Tempest Williams and Sy Montgomery, Landis gracefully chronicles these untold stories with a veterinarian's careful eye and the curiosity of a naturalist.--
Book Synopsis Lyme Borreliosis in Europe and North America by : Sunil K. Sood
Download or read book Lyme Borreliosis in Europe and North America written by Sunil K. Sood and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The facts about Lyme disease, from epidemiology to treatment to control Lyme borreliosis, popularly known as Lyme disease, remains the most commonly reported tick-transmitted infection in North America and Europe. A growing body of scientific and clinical evidence has facilitated early diagnosis and effective treatment. Nonetheless, there are a number of misconceptions about this infectious disease that have given rise to unproven, potentially dangerous alternative therapies. In Lyme Borreliosis in Europe and North America, a team of authors whose expertise spans basic research, epidemiology, and clinical practice has compiled evidence-based information on Lyme borreliosis. Presents all the latest evidence needed to diagnose, treat, and prevent Lyme disease Lyme Borreliosis in Europe and North America begins with a review of the disease's epidemiology, the causative Borrelia genospecies, and tick vectors. It then explores pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. Next, the book examines the role of serologic, culture, and molecular diagnostic methods. The book also features a chapter on prognosis, offering an evidence-based review of outcome studies, as well as practical advice to physicians to help them manage the challenging clinical scenario of chronic symptoms attributed to Borrelia infection. The final chapter is a guide to prevention strategies, including the management of tick bites. Examines similarities and differences in Europe and North America Because differences in Borrelia genospecies are responsible for differences in the clinical presentation of Lyme borreliosis between North America and Europe, this book provides descriptions of the disease as it presents on each continent. Most of the chapters have been cowritten by experts on each continent, in order to provide a balanced perspective that combines European and North American findings, practices, and experiences. Helps everyone better understand, treat, and control Lyme disease Lyme Borreliosis in Europe and North America is a comprehensive reference, ideal for clinicians, researchers, and public health officials who seek to treat and control Lyme borreliosis. It will help them better understand the facts and make sense of the misconceptions and myths that surround this infectious disease.

Book Synopsis A Survey of the Benthic Macroinvertebrates of the Yellow River by : Scott D. Prill
Download or read book A Survey of the Benthic Macroinvertebrates of the Yellow River written by Scott D. Prill and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A benthic macroinvertebrate survey was conducted at six sampling locations on the Yellow River in May 1981. Densities at the sampling sites paralleled those of the 1978 survey, with the greatest densities collected in the class B cold water segment of the river. Substantially lower densities were obtained at the other collecting s i t e s in the river. The dominant organisms collected belonged to the family Chironomidae, accounting for approximately 40% of the total density. Several species of mayfly nymphs (i .e. Baetis flavistriga, Ephemerella aurivilli, and Stenonema mediopunctatum) and caddisfly larvae (i .e. Cheumatopsyche sp., Symphitopsyche bifida and S. slossonae) were also common in the collections. The densities, number of taxa and types of benthic macroinvertebrates collected were indicative of generally good, long term water quality in the Yellow River. Two areas of suspected water quality degradation occurred in the Yellow River at Volney and in Hickory Creek, a tributary to Yellow River.
