Although Chinese piano music is a relatively new tradition, it has developed rapidly, and Chinese composers have prioritized a unique presentation of "Chinese sound" by incorporating traditional elements of folk music and melodies from ancient Chinese instruments into the repertoire. This document explores this unique fusion of new and old by analyzing the influences of traditional folk song and instrumental melodies in four 20th century Chinese piano pieces: Selling Sundry Goods (1952) by Chen Peixun (1922-2007), Variations on a Theme of Folk Songs from Shaanxi (1972) by Zhou Guangren (1928-2022), Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon (1975) by Wang Jianzhong (1933-2016), and Flute and Drum at Sunset (1975) by Li Yinghai (1927-2007).These pieces were chosen for this study for two reasons. First, they are representative works of a developing Chinese style of piano music; and second, they distinctly demonstrate the cultural prioritization of Chinese folk song and instrumental elements in a new and modern genre of musical expression. Selling Sundry Goods and Variations on a Theme of Folk Songs from Shaanxi bear the imprints of Chinese folk tunes from the Guangdong province and the Shaanxi provinces, respectively. Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon and Flute and Drum at Sunset are based on works written for traditional Chinese instruments. These four works blend the Chinese folk elements seamlessly with the Western piano to achieve a unique aesthetic, resulting in an innovative style of Chinese piano music.

Debussy is one of the most prominent composers in the history of Western music, and his music draws on many features for inspiration, among which Asian elements and impressionism are the most representative. Debussy was inspired by Asian music, literature, and painting in many compositions, giving these works distinctive sound qualities as well as artistic appeal.Based on a comprehensive study of scholarly literature as well as theoretical analysis, this project explores several Asian influences on Debussy and offers reasons for the formation of Asian style in Debussy's music. Particular elements of Asian style examined include Japanese prints and painting, Javanese gamelan music, and the Chinese pentatonic scale. Through the analysis of several of Debussy's piano pieces, including "Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut", "La fille aux cheveux de lin", and "Le palais du silence", This study discusses how Debussy's exotic colors reflect various Asian styles. Additionally, through research on Chinese music history and theory, this project compares and summarizes several differences between Chinese music and Debussy s own music in various compositions. It also analyzes three Chinese piano pieces in order to make comparisons with Debussy's music. This research supports the conclusion that Asian influences, including Chinese elements, endowed Debussy with indispensable inspiration and artistic expression in his musical compositions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to offer a study of the modern piano concerto in China, though focusing on Postures, the 2014 concerto by the Chinese-American composer Zhou Long. The thesis explores the impact of Western music on modern Chinese music and how it combines with, mixes with, perhaps even makes one with, traditional Chinese musical elements. This study aims, in particular, to be an aid in the future for both performers and audiences in understanding and appreciating this important composition of Dr. Zhou. Chapter I outlines the development of the piano concerto in China. Chapter II is an introduction at once to Zhou Long’s life and to his works; it likewise focuses on his piano compositions. Chapters III to V examine Zhou Long’s way of fitting traditional Chinese elements into what is outwardly distinctly Western music—for example, the form of the piano concerto—through a movement-by-movement analysis of Postures. This analysis consists of an examination, conjointly, of historical and theoretical aspects. These include relevant information about Chinese music history; ethnic folk dance; traditional Chinese musical elements; analysis of the concerto’s form, structure, harmony, and rhythm. There will also be consideration of piano performance practice in relation to this work. I hope this thesis, along with showing Zhou Long’s specific importance as a composer, will also shed light more generally on various key characteristics of modern piano music in China, and most specifically on the genre of the piano concerto.
