Book excerpt: Chinese America - Stereotype and Reality is a comprehensive and fascinating textbook about the Chinese in America. Covering more than 150 years of history, the book documents the increasing importance of the Chinese as a social group: from immigration history to the latest immigration legislation, from educational achievements to socio-cultural and political accomplishments. Employing the author's detailed knowledge of the Chinese Diaspora, combined with her meticulous research, the book explores the history, diversity, socio-cultural structures, networks, and achievements of this often-overlooked ethnicity. It highlights how, based on their current position, Chinese Americans are well-placed to play a major role in future relations between China and the United States - the two largest economies of the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: This book addresses the historical and contemporary involvement of Chinese Americans from diverse walks of life in U.S.-China relations. The contributors present new evidence and fresh perspectives on familiar and unfamiliar national and transnational networks - including families, businesspersons, community newspapers, students, lobbyists, philanthropists, and scientists - and consider the likely future impact of such contacts on the most important bilateral relationship at the start of the new millennium. The volume makes a multidisciplinary contribution to understanding the extensive and vital roles and promise of Chinese Americans at this critical juncture in U.S.-China relations, and to revealing the importance of migrants as actors in contemporary global politics. The assessments shared by the contributors suggest that the nature and scope of the Chinese American involvement, particularly in global civil society networks, increasingly will determine the outcome of state-to-state relations between the United States and the PRC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The far-reaching economic impact of COVID-19 has been felt across the nation, but has been particularly harmful to New York City’s Asian American workers and their families. Nationally, Asian American unemployment rates increased from 2.5% in February 2020, to 14.5% in April 2020, to 15% in May 2020 , the greatest rate of increase among all racial groups across the country. The Asian American Federation’s report will focus on what is happening locally in New York City. There is limited data on the current Asian American employment at the local level. The best survey on employment by Asian ethnicity for local areas is the American Community Survey. However, it only releases annual data in the fall and winter of each year; therefore, this report will use available local data to gauge the impact of COVID-19 on employment among Asian New Yorkers. First, we will look at the growth in state unemployment claims by Asian Americans. Next, we will use data from the American Community Survey to estimate how reliant each Asian community in New York City is on specific industries for jobs. Finally, we will look at the most recent employment reports to measure year-to-year changes in job loss for April and May to see the impact of COVID-19 on industries that Asian New Yorkers have traditionally relied on for employment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1965 Immigration Act altered the lives and outlook of Chinese Americans in fundamental ways. The New Chinese America explores the historical, economic, and social foundations of the Chinese American community, in order to reveal the emergence of a new social hierarchy after 1965. In this detailed and comprehensive study of contemporary Chinese America, Xiaojian Zhao uses class analysis to illuminate the difficulties of everyday survival for poor and undocumented immigrants and analyzes the process through which social mobility occurs. Through ethnic ties, Chinese Americans have built an economy of their own in which entrepreneurs can maintain a competitive edge given their access to low-cost labor; workers who are shut out of the mainstream job market can find work and make a living; and consumers can enjoy high quality services at a great bargain. While the growth of the ethnic economy enhances ethnic bonds by increasing mutual dependencies among different groups of Chinese Americans, it also determines the limits of possibility for various individuals depending on their socioeconomic and immigration status.
