Book excerpt: African students studying in the United States of America encounter challenges during their quest to earn a western degree. This project specifically addresses the experiences of African students studying at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. Though the thesis makes particular references to the African students at Minot State, there are some general challenges that are addressed such as adjustment and financial problems that might be common to African students studying in other institutions in the United State. The thesis also analyzes the importance of a western education/degree to Africans, and defines some benefits African students derive from studying abroad in the United States in particular. Furthermore, teh thesis offers recommendations that might help new and current African students in the United States have a smoother transition intno the American system during their studies at Minot State University specifically, through which the difficulties they undergo while studying in the United States and Minot might be reduced. the thesis reiterates the important responsibilities of the institutions to their African students. Instead of havin gan indifferent attitude toward their adjustment problems, they are to provide necessary help needed to alleviate the challenges and concerns of the students. The presence of international students, Africans included, in American campuses is a financial investment to the institutions as well as a medium for the universities to internationalize their curriculum, the faculty, and the student body.

Book excerpt: The third edition of Africana Studies: A Survey of Africa and the African Diaspora is an update of the second edition (1998) and incorporates new chapters that include expanded coverage of issues on women, health, terrorism, the African Union, and many others, as well as the most recent theories and methods in Africana studies. To date, Africana Studies remains the most comprehensive and most suitable text for both teachers and students interested in Africa and the Diaspora in the US, the Caribbean, Afro-Latin-America, and elsewhere. The book is divided into five parts: the state of the art of Africana studies; the evolution of the history of black people; analysis of the contributions of the black world; the present and future status of these peoples; and the societies and values of black people. The book also includes a chronology of significant events in the history of peoples of African descent and a number of maps. "[This book] attempts in one volume to present more accurately the experiences and contributions of the African world. It introduces readers to the most comprehensive account of black interdisciplinary subjects to date and summarizes the research of specialists in a variety of fields... The number of contributors, variety, and depth of coverage show that the work was carefully thought out." -- Insights, on an earlier edition

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Guidebooks - School, Education, Pedagogy, grade: 3.9, , course: Organizational Leadership & Development, language: English, abstract: International students’ enrollment in higher education in the U.S has expanded considerably in the last decades. In 2015, the United States hosted more of the world’s 4.1 million international students than any other country. With the number of foreign students that come to study in the U.S, 14.5% of international students are African students with the majority of the population coming from Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana. The U.S. is often described as the land of opportunity abroad, but this research intends to explore that perception for international students, especially African students. Many consider African international students as the gateway to local business owners in the U.S seeking to expand a wider global horizon, especially in Africa. This research explored the different types of academic and social challenges faced by African international students in collegiate institutions in America through auto-ethnographic research, and to find possible solutions to those challenges faced by African students. This is a qualitative research approach that used the sequential auto-ethnographic experience of the author as the research tool in identifying and categorizing some of the challenges faced by African international students. It is the researcher’s intention that the findings in this research will be used as a guide for the next group of African international students aspiring to come to the U.S to study.
