Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Supplement to the Glossary of the Dialect of Cumberland As this Supplement is intended to be used in conjunction with, and not wholly independent of, the previous volume, and to avoid unnecessary repetition, a number Often follows the Headword. In such a case reference must be made to the page in the earlier Glossary whereon will be found the same Headword; then the connexion Of the Old material with new, whether consisting of variants, new localities, or illustrations not previously obtainable, will be made clear; otherwise the additions will at first Sight ap pear to be irrelevant. The corrections and additions to the Preface are also paged (roman numerals), in order that the reader may the more easily make comparison if he Should SO desire. For more than one reason it was thought that a list Of Similes current in the county would be of interest; it will be seen that whilst many are truly dialectal, others are but translations into the vernacular of those in general use. The Proverbial Sayings are quaint, and indicative of the character of the people. I am indebted to Mr. R. W. Moore, mining engineer, for a valuable list of Mining Terms formerly in use in Cumberland, which he has collected whilst preparing the chapter on Coal-mining, for the Victoria History of the county. My hearty thanks are likewise due to all who have verbally and by letter replied to my many inquiries, and who have not spared themselves any trouble to give me of their best. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of the Words and Phrases of Cumberland The English language has no equivalent to the vowel sound in the way the word brust (burst) is pronounced. It is not the u, the 3, nor the i, but a kind of compromise between the e and the i. The word run is in a similar predicament, it being frequently pronounced in a half-way sound between win and ran, and partly approaching to ren, but not strictly coinciding with the sound of any of them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Dialect of Lorton (Cumberland): Historical and Descriptive With an Appendix on the Scandinavian Element Dialect Specimens and a Glossary The aim of the following treatise is to outline, as accurately as possible, the phonology and grammar of the dialect spoken in and around the village of Lorton in West Cumberland, and also, as far as the phonology is concerned, to illustrate the development of the Old English sounds in the dialect. In choosing the Cumberland dialect as my object of investigation I acted on the advice of Professor Joseph Wright, of the University of Oxford, to whom I am also indebted for many valuable hints during the course of my work. Professor Wright expressed the opinion that in Cumberland, if anywhere, I might hope to find a distinct and well-preserved dialect idiom, and the experience gained during my stay in West Cumberland fully corroborated his statement. I found that the dialect spoken by the true natives of the Lorton district had preserved a striking originality of forms, and that it had been impaired only to a very slight extent by the destructive force of outside influence. The situation of Lorton, in the deep valley of Lorton which is bounded on both sides by high mountain ranges, mostly inhabited by natives of the district, and having very little intercourse with the outside world, has served also to preserve the dialect of the place pure and intact. The nearest town is Cockermouth (about four miles distant), but here also the Cumbrian element seems to be distinctly predominant. It is a well-known fact to every one who has been engaged in dialect studies of any kind that the task of bringing together a genuine and perfectly reliable dialect material is a most difficult and troublesome one. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to an Essex Dialect Dictionary Supplement Fall of the leaf (autumn), is now rare in literature, a dialect phrase. Fettle is a dialect or colloquial word. King-cup is a general literary word for certain kinds of ranunculus; we use it only for marsh-marigold. Mercury with us is Good King Henry only; in literature it is also used for Dog's Mercury (Mercurialis perennis) and other plants. Sere, dry, generally, in literature, we use only for wood and vegetation. Spinney I cannot defend; it shall go. Yet Dr. Joseph Wright admits it to The Dialect Dictionary. I shall be glad to hear of any other words whose right can be challenged, and will apply the supreme test, as is done above, of the Oxford Dictionary. Regret is expressed by one or two critics that a phonetic system is lacking. That is due partly to my incompetence - for I am ignorant of phonetics, and perhaps incapable of acquiring a working knowledge of them - but were I ever so skilled, I would have avoided strict scientific treatment, because it would have been incomprehensible to people for whom the book was designed, the general reader. Take the Dialect Dictionary, and see what a complete system of sound analysis would mean. What would the' man in the street' make of ewe for away, ater (after), bali (barley), bvil (boil), bwei (boy) - to say nothing of a squad of other strange symbols which cannot be presented here because they require special type? I have therefore adopted the method of The Concise Oxford Dictionary designed for the general reader, wherein explanatory spellings, when they are needed, are such as fahdher (father), kawf (cough), duv (dove), sahm (psalm), westcul (waistcoat), britshiz (breeches), and so on. Thus, with submission, but with some shadow of justification, to my kindly critics, whose comments I value highly, and find most helpful. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of the Cleveland Dialect: Explanatory, Derivative, and Critical Ten years ago the work which has resulted in the publication of this book was somewhat more than merely entered upon. But I am not able to say how long it is ago since the first thoughts of publication in the present, or in any, form definitely presented themselves: it was not, however, until some time after the labour bestowed had begotten greater interest, and the interest had stimulated not only increased painstaking but more diligent and systematic study. In the hope the book may prove that neither the labour nor the study has been quite without effect towards the illustration of an interesting subject and in the cause of philology, it is now submitted to the judgment of the public. No one can be more sensible than the author of its many imperfections and deficiencies. Many errors, many failures, many shortcomings will inevitably be pointed out. Working alone and unassisted, as he has done, in a singularly remote district, far from any accessible collection of books which might have been of aid, or from habitual intercourse with cultivated minds, with the duties of a very wide Moorland parish to attend to, with his children to teach himself, it could hardly fail to be so, however honest and hearty the labour bestowed in his not too abundant spare time might be. This is not written to deprecate criticism. He would, indeed, rather invite it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
