Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mechanism for fatigue crack growth in aluminum alloys under a chemically aggressive environment is discussed, based on the current understanding of hydrogen embrittlement phenomena. This mechanism is discussed quantitatively in terms of the three-term superposition model proposed by Wei et al. A diffusion-controlled model, characterizing the cycle-dependent interaction of fatigue loading and environmental attack, is developed, based on the assumption that crack growth enhancement results from microvoid nucleation due to hydrogen accumulation at inhomogencities ahead of a crack tip. This model is evaluated with limited data on Aluminum 7075-T6. The model developed in this paper accounts for the significant parameters affecting corrosion-fatigue crack growth enhancement. Integration of this model into the superposition scheme is discussed, including the application to predicting crack growth behavior in a corrosive environment for spectrum loading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to integrate environmental (thermal and chemical) considerations and probabilistic methods into a life prediction model for corrosion fatigue crack growth. The approach is illustrated through simplified modeling of aluminum alloys with the aid of the MODGRO program for fatigue analysis. Damage is modeled as a stage II fatigue crack by a well-accepted power law. A superposition model is adapted to take into account corrosion effects, and temperature dependance is modeled as an Arrhenius formulation. The cumulative distribution functions for the underlying random variables are assumed, but reflected realistic data. The influence of temperature, of random variables, and sequencing effect of loading spectrum on fatigue life are then investigated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of fatigue testing of 7017-T651 aluminum alloy in seawater at frequencies from 0.1 to 70 Hz have been assessed in relation to the stress corrosion behavior of this material. In particular, the applicability of a simple superposition model is examined. Detailed fractographic examination indicates a dependence of fracture mode upon both crack growth rate and frequency that is consistent with a dependence upon the rate of diffusion of hydrogen in the material. Despite this, it seems that some other process provides the rate-determining step in the cracking. Various possibilities are considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Handbook is to provide a review of the knowledge and experiences in the field of fatigue fracture mechanics. It is well-known that engineering structures can fail due to cyclic loading. For instance, a cyclically time-varying loading reduces the structure strength and can provoke a fatigue failure consisting of three stages: (a) crack initiation (b) crack propagation and (c) catastrophic failure. Since last century many scientists have tried to understand the reasons for the above-mentioned failures and how to prevent them. This Handbook contains valuable contributions from leading experts within the international scientific community and covers many of the important problems associated with the fatigue phenomena in civil, mechanical and nuclear engineering.
