The authors of this paper have identified three general classes of mechanisms that can affect species as a result of climate change: demographic, phenological, and genetic. Each of these classes can cause population expansions or contractions depending on the ecology of particular species. To demonstrate the range of potential climate effects, they present case studies for deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), moose (Alces alces), eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis), polar bear (Ursus maritimus), red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), and black-capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus). They also summarize a review of climate change studies of vertebrate species that occur in Ontario. The first chapter is a review of predicted climate induced changes on freshwater fish communities and food webs and details the effects of changes in biotic and abiotic processes on freshwater fish communities and food webs. The second chapter describes the impact that changes in climate are expected to have both directly and indirectly on a variety of fish species and their habitats. The third Chapter describes suitable thermal habitat for stream biota based on different climate variables to assess the potential impacts of climate change on the distribution of coldwater stream fish species in the Great Lakes Basin. The last chapter provides an overview of climate change impacts on water temperature, water chemistry, ice cover, water levels, and productivity. This report provides significant evidence that under a changing climate we can expect significant changes in the spatial extent and duration of preferred thermal habitat for ecologically and economically important fish across the Freshwater region. Warming temperatures expected with climate change will cause areas to approach water temperatures that are no longer thermally optimum for fish species. Species will need to migrate to find suitable habitats and productivity and survival success may decline for some species. Greater habitat overlap may intensify interguild competition and food web interactions. These changes in thermal habitat may intensify top down food web effects"--Abstract.

These water-level fluctuations (WLF) have multiple effects on the organisms above and below the waterline. Natural WLF patterns in lakes guarantee both productivity and biodiversity, while untimely floods and droughts may have negative effects. Human impacts on WLF have led to a stabilization of the water levels of many lakes by hydraulic regulation, untimely drawdown due to water use, or floods due to water release from hydropower plants in the catchments. This book provides a first review in this field. It presents selected papers on the ecological effects of WLF in lakes, resulting from a workshop at the University of Konstanz in winter 2005. Issues addressed here include the extent of WLF, and analyses of their effects on different groups of biota from microorganisms to vertebrates. Applied issues include recommendations for the hydrological management of regulated lakes to reduce negative impacts, and a conceptual framework is delivered by an extension of the floodpulse concept for lakes.
