Book excerpt: Maize planting is normally accomplished by hand in the developing world where two or more seeds are placed per hill with a heterogeneous plant spacing and density. To understand the interaction between seed distribution and distance between hills on grain yield and nitrogen (N) uptake, experiments were established in 2012 and 2013 at Lake Carl Blackwell (LCB) and Efaw Agronomy Research Stations, near Stillwater, OK. A randomized complete block design was used with three replications and ten treatments; and a factorial treatment structure of 1, 2 and 3 seeds per hill using inter-row spacings of 0.16, 0.32 and 0.48m. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Intercepted Photosynthetically Active Radiation (IPAR), grain yield and N uptake were measured. Results showed that, on average, NDVI and IPAR increased with number of seeds per hill by 9 and 14%, and decreased with plant spacing by 10 and 11%, respectively. Book excerpt: In general, yield reduction in most dryland maize growing areas of South Africa occur because seasonal rainfall distribution is erratic with annual variation that cannot be predicted accurately. Cultivar selection, planting date and plant density are other factors that consistently affect maize yield. Long growing season maize cultivars are higher yielding, particularly under conditions of good moisture and nutrient supply. However, as both moisture and nutrient availability becomes more limiting, yield tends to decline. Short growing season maize cultivars could yield more than long season counterparts because they can maximize the growing season and potentially reach the critical flowering stage before traditional midsummer droughts occur. The short growing season maize cultivars, which have only recently been developed, have traits, which can address the problem of reduced yield, which is ascribed to midsummer drought. There has been no previous effort to evaluate the effects of planting dates and plant densities on yield and yield components of these short and ultra-short growth period maize cultivars. This prompted research in the 2004/05 growing season. One field experiment was conducted at each of two selected areas (Bethlehem & Potchefstroom) in the Maize Triangle of South Africa. The aim was to evaluate the response of short and ultra-short growth period maize cultivars to planting dates and plant densities at two localities with distinct environmental conditions. The effects of planting date, plant density and cultivar on yield and yield components were investigated. Both yield and yield components were affected by planting date, plant density and cultivar at both localities. At both localities early and optimum planting dates as well as low and optimum plant densities promoted increases in yield components, which contributed to increased grain yield. As for the cultivars, PAN6017 proved to be the most consistent since it out-performed other cultivars in terms of both vegetative growth, yield components and grain yield at both localities. At both localities, plant height, leaf area index and dry matter yield were affected by both planting date and plant density, with optimum planting date and optimum plant density contributing to highest yield components and yield. PAN 6017 was superior to the other cultivars at all planting dates and plant densities at both localities. In order to make findings from a study such as this applicable to the Maize Triangle, more research on short and ultra-short growth period maize cultivars should be conducted over a wider range of locations and seasons.

Book excerpt: Plant breeders selectively breed plants to maximize productivity within the context of the target environment(s). These environments can be viewed as entire fields or regions with common features, such as weather or soil characteristics, or specific growing conditions unique to a single plant within a field. The objectives of this dissertation are: (1) assess the effects of selection and environment cues on plant performance and stability using maize hybrids derived from a common genetic background and (2) evaluate the effect of planting density on yield component traits in maize. Both of these studies utilize resources and datasets that are part of the Genomes To Fields (G2F) Initiative. Chapter One provides background on the history of maize and its importance, plant development and various abiotic influences on grain yield, and an overview of genotype-by-environment interaction (G × E) and stability. Chapter Two examines how breeding for productivity has influenced trait stability and which environmental variables are most influential in hybrid performance. Across a range of environments, we observed increased stability and improved performance in lines that had undergone multiple cycles of selection relative to unselected lines across most productivity traits (such as, stand count, flowering time, and grain yield), except stalk lodging. The environmental variables that were most influential on plant performance were those related to soil classification and day length. When comparing the environmental variables estimates across models, using genotype (G) and G × E variance in place of the raw phenotypic trait values generated environmental that were significantly correlated to the traditional stability environmental rankings. This suggests that environmental variance is not a good indicator of environment ranking, while G+ G×E better explains hybrid performance. In Chapter Three, an ever-increasing density (EID) plot design was used to evaluate the response of hybrids to increased planting densities using image-based phenotyping of grain yield components. This study used a set of three biparental populations sharing one parent in common, the others representing a highly selected, an almost complete unselected, and an intermediately selected parent. Kernel size traits were the most sensitive to increases in planting density and decreased significantly, while ear and cob width were the least sensitive and did not significantly change. The lines derived from the least selected parent produced the heaviest cobs and kernels, and largest kernel size, while the lines derived from the commercially relevant and highly selected parent produced the lightest cobs and smallest kernels. When connecting density traits data with production-level G2F data, ear height in the production-level environments was significantly correlated with ear height at two of the EID treatments. The known correlation between these two formats supports the continued use of the EID design to evaluate varying planting density effects. Overall, this work emphasizes the utility of dissecting environments at multiple levels to better understand the driving forces of plant performance and stability, and an alternative planting density scheme to understand the effects of variable planting density on yield component traits, and genetically dissect grain yield components for continued improvement.

Presently maize is widely grown in most parts of the world over a wide range of environmental conditions ranging between 50o latitude north and south of the equator. Maize is an important field crop in terms of area coverage, production and utilization in Ethiopia. It ranks second in area coverage (after teff) and first in total production among cereals. It is grown for its food and feed values and one of the most important staples and cash crops and the main sources of calories. In view of its high demand for food grains and high yield per unit area, maize has been among the leading food grains selected to achieve food self-sufficiency in Ethiopia.The major maize producing regions in Ethiopia are Oromia, Amhara, and SNNPRS in descending order. The national average productivity of maize was 4.09 ton ha-1. In SNNPRS, maize ranked first in terms of area coverage and production among cereals and its average yield was 3.93 ton ha-1. Wolaita zone is one of the most important maize producing zones in SNNPR State. According to CSA report, at Wolaita zone, maize is the first leading crops among cereals in area coverage, and its zonal average yield was 3.01 tha-1.
