Book excerpt: The top most mantle of earth, which was once rock, has been transformed to soil by natural forces of weather .Texturally soil is not one material but a compound of three ingradients, derived from the same parental rock . They are sand, silt and clay. Though mostly soil occurs as a combination of the three materials, there are places where stretches of sand do occur alone where building activity has to be carried out. Besides occurrence of sand in a soil (its percentage) mass influences its strength characteristics to a great extent. For example, while constructing piers and abutments (of a bridge) which mostly stand on a sandy base, the bearing capacity of sand becomes the most important criterion in deciding the size and depth of the construction. Besides strength of silt and clay get drastically affected when it comes in contact with water. But sand except very fine sand, is least affected with water. It is therefore very important to study the extent to which the strength of sand is affected with water.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one out of 8 IAEG XII Congress volumes, and deals with the theme of urban geology. Along with a rapidly growing world population, the wave of urban growth continues, causing cities to swell and new metropolitan centers to emerge. These global trends also open new ventures for underground city development. Engineering geology plays a major role in facing the increasing issues of the urban environment, such as: finding aggregates for construction works; providing adequate water supply and waste management; solving building problems associated to geological and geomorphological conditions; evaluating host rock conditions for underground constructions; preventing or mitigating geological and seismic hazards. Furthermore, this book illustrates recent advancements in sustainable land use planning, which includes conservation, protection, reclamation and landscape impact of open pit mining and alternative power generation. The Engineering Geology for Society and Territory volumes of the IAEG XII Congress held in Torino from September 15-19, 2014, analyze the dynamic role of engineering geology in our changing world and build on the four main themes of the congress: environment, processes, issues and approaches. The congress topics and subject areas of the 8 IAEG XII Congress volumes are: 1. Climate Change and Engineering Geology 2. Landslide Processes River Basins 3. Reservoir Sedimentation and Water Resources 4. Marine and Coastal Processes Urban Geology 5. Sustainable Planning and Landscape Exploitation 6. Applied Geology for Major Engineering Projects 7. Education, Professional Ethics and Public Recognition of Engineering Geology 8. Preservation of Cultural Heritage

Book excerpt: Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) is a new type of fiber-reinforced bendable cementitious composite that is used in various civil engineering applications instead of conventional and fiber-reinforced concrete due to its high mechanical and durable properties. In the macro and micro mechanic systems of ECC, the incorporation of different materials plays a vital role in enhancing the properties of ECC. Conventional concrete and fiber-reinforced concrete have a brittle nature and crack easily under environmental and mechanical loads, affecting the durability of structures. The usage of alternative materials in the ECC modifies the brittle nature and offers environmentally sustainable construction with low embodied energy and a negative carbon footprint. Production, Properties, and Applications of Engineered Cementitious Composites highlights the new and innovative ways of production, properties, and various applications of engineered cementitious composites. The main focus of the book is on the latest advancements, technical knowledge, tools, and solutions for engineered cementitious composites manufacturing, design, and technologies for construction from various perspectives. Covering key topics such as alternative materials, mineral admixtures, and testing of engineered cementitious composites, this premier reference source is ideal for engineers, industry professionals, researchers, academicians, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.
