Book excerpt: The results of an investigation of boundary layers close to the stagnation point of an oscillating airfoil are reported. Two procedures for generating initial conditions - the characteristics-box scheme and a quasi-static approach - were investigated, and the quasi-static approach was shown to be appropriate provided the initial region was far from any flow separation. With initial conditions generated in this way, the unsteady boundary-layer equations were solved for the flow in the leading-edge region of a NACA 0012 airfoil oscillating from 0 degrees to 5 degrees. Results were obtained for both laminar and turbulent flow, and, in the latter case, the effect of transition was assessed by specifying its occurrence at different locations. The results demonstrate the validity of the numerical scheme and suggest that the procedures should be applied to calculation of the entire flow around oscillating airfoils. (Author).

In addition, an international survey of industrial, university, and government research laboratories was made, in which new and ongoing experimental programs associated with unsteady turbulent boundary-layer research were identified. Pertinent references were reviewed and classified based on the technical emphasis of the various experiments that include instantaneous or ensemble-averaged profiles of boundary-layer variables are stressed. Detailed reviews that include descriptions of the experimental apparatus, flow conditions, summaries of acquired data, and significant conclusions are made. The measurements made in these experiments that exist in digital form have been stored on magnetic tape, and instructions are presented for accessing these data sets for further analysis. (Author).

Book excerpt: This research program used experimental measurements and computational simulations to study the drag reduction, and the resulting effects on turbulence structure, for a turbulent wall flow subjected to lateral wall oscillations. Major objectives for this study were to establish wall oscillation conditions resulting in maximum drag reduction, and how the turbulence structure was altered so that this drag reduction was attained. Furthermore we were interested in the drag reduction performance over a range of Reynolds numbers, and the onset of the drag reduction at the start of the oscillating wall section, and the decay of drag reduction downstream of the oscillating wall. Our experiments showed the maximum drag reduction for an oscillating wall is 30%. Furthermore, the drag reduction reaches an asymptotic level with increasing wall oscillation velocity, with the maximum level occurring by approximately W sub wp=15. Drag reduction performance was tested for Reynolds numbers of Re theta =500, 950, 1400 and 2400, and the performance was found to be independent of Reynolds number for this range. Experimental and computational studies of the turbulence structure showed the oscillating wall has dramatic effect in practically eliminating the streak structures. Furthermore, the burst and sweep structures were suppressed.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of turbulence encountered in coastal and civil engineering. The primary aim of the book is to describe turbulence processes including transition to turbulence; mean and fluctuating flows in channels/pipes, and in currents; wave boundary layers (including boundary layers under solitary waves); streaming processes in wave boundary layers; turbulence processes in breaking waves including breaking solitary waves; turbulence processes such as bursting process and their implications for sediment transport; flow resistance in steady and wave boundary layers; and turbulent diffusion and dispersion processes in the coastal and river environment, including sediment transport due to diffusion/dispersion.Both phenomenological and statistical theories are described in great detail. Turbulence modelling is also described, and several examples for modelling of turbulence in steady flow and wave boundary layers are presented. The book ends with a chapter containing hands-on exercises on a wide variety of turbulent flows including experimental study of turbulence in an open-channel flow, using Laser Doppler Anemometry; Statistical, correlation and spectral analysis of turbulent air jet flow; Turbulence modelling of wave boundary layer flows; and numerical modelling of dispersion in a turbulent boundary layer, a set of exercises used by the authors in their Masters classes over many years.Although the book is essentially intended for professionals and researchers in the area of Coastal and Civil Engineering, and as a text book for graduate/post graduate students, the contents of the book will, however, additionally provide sufficient background in the study of turbulent flows relevant to many other disciplines, such as Wind Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers focuses on turbulent flows meeting the requirements for the boundary-layer or thin-shear-layer approximations. Its approach is devising relatively fundamental, and often subtle, empirical engineering correlations, which are then introduced into various forms of describing equations for final solution. After introducing the topic on turbulence, the book examines the conservation equations for compressible turbulent flows, boundary-layer equations, and general behavior of turbulent boundary layers. The latter chapters describe the CS method for calculating two-dimensional and axisymmetric laminar and turbulent boundary layers. This book will be useful to readers who have advanced knowledge in fluid mechanics, especially to engineers who study the important problems of design.

Book excerpt: A turbulent boundary layer, subjected to a free-stream velocity which changes sinusiodally in time under a zero time mean pressure gradient, is studied both experimentally and analytically. Using a two-component Laser Doppler Anemometer and a Heat Flux Gage, detailed and high quality information is obtained on the instantaneous velocity distribution and wall shear stress, respectively, at various stations. An asymptotic theory, for large Reynolds numbers, is developed for the oscillatory motion. It is valid for both boundary layers at arbitrary time-mean pressure gradients and fully developed pipe and channel flow, and is successfully applied to the present and previous available experimental information. The theory identifies two frequency parameters, in terms of which four different frequency regimes are defined. Similarity laws are identified for each one of these frequency regimes. All the experimental data have been archived on magnetic tape. (Author).

Book excerpt: Sediment transport is of crucial importance to engineering projects in coastal regions, so it is of primary interest in coastal engineering. The driving forces for sediment transport are mostly determined by the hydrodynamics of oscillatory turbulent bottom boundary layers, which is still not well understood. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to improve the present experimental and theoretical understandings on this subject. A high-quality experimental study including a large number of tests which correspond to full-scale coastal boundary layer flows is performed using a state-of-the-art oscillating water tunnel (OWT) for flow generations and a Particle Image Velocimetry system for velocity measurements. The experimental results suggest that the logarithmic profile can accurately represent the boundary layer flows in the very near-bottom region, so the log-profile fitting analysis can give highly accurate determinations of the hydrodynamic roughness, the theoretical bottom location and the bottom shear stress. The current velocity profiles in the presence of sinusoidal waves indicate a two-log-profile structure suggested by the widely-used Grant-Madsen model. However, for weak currents in the presence of nonlinear waves, the two-log-profile structure is contaminated or even totally obliterated by the boundary layer streaming which is related with the temporal variation of the turbulent eddy viscosity. This, together with some other experimental evidence, motivates the development of a new theoretical model which adopts a rigorous way to account for a time-varying turbulent eddy viscosity. The model accurately predicts the mean and leading Fourier components of the velocity and the bottom shear stress for various flow conditions. Most importantly, the boundary layer streaming related to the time-varying turbulent eddy viscosity is reasonably predicted, which leads to successful predictions of the mean velocity embedded in nonlinear-wave tests and the current velocity profiles in the presence of either sinusoidal or nonlinear waves. The predictions reveal significant differences between boundary layer flows in OWTs and in the coastal environment, which must be considered when interpreting OWT results for sediment transport.

Book excerpt: A two-point finite difference unsteady laminar and turbulent boundary layer computational method was used to investigate the properties of the flow around an airfoil (NACA 0012) oscillating through angles of attack up to 18 degrees, for reduced frequencies of 0.01 and 0.20. The unsteady potential flow was determined using the unsteady potential flow method of Geissler. The influence of transition location on stal behavior was investigated, using both experimentally determined transition information, and transition located at the pressure peak; the results show the need for viscous-inviscid interaction in future computation of such flows. Book excerpt: An experimental study of the effects of forced, free-stream unsteadiness on turbulent boundary layers was undertaken in an effort to characterize the nature of such flows and to provide guidance for turbulence modelers. A turbulent boundary layer, which had developed under steady, constant-pressure conditions, was locally subjected to a range of frequencies of sinusoidal free-stream unsteadiness. The response of the boundary layer to these free-stream effects was studied through simultaneous measurements of the u and v components of the velocity field, using a two-color laser-doppler anemometer. To focus on the distinct behaviors of the deterministic and time-averaged fields of flow, the equations of fluid motion were reformulated according to a triple decomposition of velocity and pressure into; (i) a time-averaged measure, (ii) a deterministic or organized, unsteady measure, and (iii) a turbulent measure.
