Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a thin plate or beam, if the deformation is on the order of the thickness and remain elastic, linear theory may not produce accurate results as it does not predict the in plane movement of the member. Therefore, a geometrically nonlinear, large deformation theory is required to account for the inconsistencies. This thesis discusses nonlinear bending and vibrations of simply-supported beams and plates. Theoretical results are compared with other well-known solutions. The effects of geometric nonlinearities are discussed. The equation of motion for plates with `stress-free' and `immovable' edges are derived using modal analysis in conjunction with the expansion theorem. Theoretical results are compared with a finite element simulation for plates. `Immovable' edges are studied for beams. For large bending of beams with `stress-free' edges, a theory by Conway is presented. A brief introduction to Duffing's equation and Gaussian curvature is presented and their relevance to nonlinear deformations are discussed.
Book Synopsis The Bending and Stretching of Plates by : E. H. Mansfield
Download or read book The Bending and Stretching of Plates written by E. H. Mansfield and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bending and Stretching of Plates deals with elastic plate theory, particularly on small- and large-deflexion theory. Small-deflexion theory concerns derivation of basic equations, rectangular plates, plates of various shapes, plates whose boundaries are amenable to conformal transformation, plates with variable rigidity, and approximate methods. Large-deflexion theory includes general equations and some exact solutions, approximate methods in large-deflexion theory, asymptotic large-deflexion theories for very thin plates. Asymptotic theories covers membrane theory, tension field theory, and inextensional theory. The book explains stress-strain relations, effect of forces in the plane of the plate, and rectangular plates that have all edges simply supported, or where plates that have all edges clamped. The text also considers plates of constant thickness whose boundaries are circular, sector-shaped, elliptical, or triangular. Muskhelishvili (1933) addresses boundary value problems of plane stress using analytical methods of the biharmonic equation. The book also investigates some approximate methods of analysis of large-deflexion behavior of plates of constant thickness where there is either a uniformly distributed load, or a compressive load in the plane of the plate in excess of that necessary to cause initial buckling. The book explains that the engineer can use the principle of minimum potential energy to investigate large deflexion of plates. The text is suitable for structural engineers in civil, mechanical or marine engineering, as well as to structural research workers and students.

Download or read book Analysis of Plates written by T.K Varadan and published by ALPHA SCIENCE INTERNATIONAL LIMITED. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the classical plate theory most commonly used for the analysis of thin metallic plate structures. The basic assumptions of the plate theory are not straightaway taken for granted, but are deduced as logical inferences from a three-dimensional elasticity solution for a thin rectangular slab. In addition, the elasticity results are used to verify the accuracy of the plate theory. Statics, dynamics as well as stability of plates are dealt with. Besides a lucid explanation of the theory, exact and approximate solution methodologies are discussed. The approach adopted throughout--with emphasis on close correspondence with the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, and on the implications of each assumption of the plate theory--enables the reader to easily progress on to the study of state-of-the-art topics such as geometric and material nonlinearities, refined plate theories accounting for warping and stretching of the normal and laminated construction and material orthotropy typical of fibre-reinforced composites.

Book excerpt: This book covers the essentials of developments in the area of plate structures and presents them so that the readers can obtain a quick understanding and overview of the subject. Several theoretical models are employed for their analysis and design starting from the classical thin plate theory to alternatives obtained by incorporation of appropriate complicating effects or by using fundamentally different assumptions. The book includes pedagogical features like end-of-chapter exercises and worked examples to help students in self-learning. The book is extremely useful for the senior undergraduate and postgraduate students of aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering.
Book Synopsis The Bending and Stretching of Plates by : E. H. Mansfield
Download or read book The Bending and Stretching of Plates written by E. H. Mansfield and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the world's leading authorities on plate behavior, this study gives a clear physical insight into elastic plate behavior. Small-deflection theory is treated in Part 1 in chapters dealing with basic equations: including thermal effects and multi-layered anisotropic plates, rectangular plates, circular and other shaped plates, plates whose boundaries are amenable to conformal transformation, plates with variable thickness, and approximate methods. Large-deflection theory is treated in Part 2 in chapters dealing with basic equations and exact solutions; approximate methods, including post-buckling behavior; and asymptotic theories for very thin plates, including tension field theory and inextensional theory. The mathematical content is necessarily high, making the style of the book appropriate to engineers and applied mathematicians. E.H. Mansfield is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a founder member of the Fellowship of Engineering, and the author of over 100 publications.

This book was released on 1999-02-10 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text presents a complete treatment of the theory and analysis of elastic plates. It provides detailed coverage of classic and shear deformation plate theories and their solutions by analytical as well as numerical methods for bending, buckling and natural vibrations. Analytical solutions are based on the Navier and Levy solution method, and numerical solutions are based on the Rayleigh-Ritz methods and finite element method. The author address a range of topics, including basic equations of elasticity, virtual work and energy principles, cylindrical bending of plates, rectangular plates and an introduction to the finite element method with applications to plates.

This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 5.0, Nile Valley University, course: BSc, language: English, abstract: The objective of this book is to present a complete and up to date treatment of rectangular laminated plates with uniform cross sections. Dynamic Relaxation (DR) method is presented for the geometrically linear and nonlinear laterally loaded, rectangular laminated plates. The analysis uses the Mindlin plate theory which accounts for transverse shear deformation. A computer program has been compiled. The convergence and accuracy of the DR solutions for elastic small and large deflection response are established by comparison with various exact and approximate solutions. New numerical results are generated for uniformly loaded square laminated plates which serve to quantify the effects of shear deformation, material anisotropy, fiber orientation, and coupling between bending and stretching. It was found that linear analysis seriously over-predicts deflections of plates. The shear deflection depends greatly on a number of factors such as length/ thickness ratio, degree of anisotropy and number of layers. It was also found that coupling between bending and stretching can increase or decrease the bending stiffness of a laminate depending on whether it is positive or negative.
