Book excerpt: The first successfully n-doped a-C:H films grown from mixtures of CH$\sb4$ and N$\sb2$ using the dc saddle-field deposition method are presented. Film composition (IR, RBS) studies showed evidence of bonded nitrogen. A conductivity increase of two orders of magnitude over the control film conductivity characterized the f(N$\sb2)$ = 0.02 sample; the decrease of activation energy from a midgap level of 0.7 eV to 0.2 eV concurred. The activation energy change may be interpreted as a rise of the Fermi level towards the conduction band. Such a shift would be consistent with the introduction of nitrogen donor states below the conduction band edge. Significant conductivity and activation energy changes occurred only with low N concentration: films with N content above f(N$\sb2)$ = 0.02 showed conductivity saturation and a constant activation energy. The films may thus exhibit a "clean" band gap rarely found in a-C:H but important because of its potential for more efficient doping.

Book excerpt: Abstract: As the era of nanoelectronics is dawning, CNT (carbon nanotube), a one-dimensional nano material with outstanding properties and performances, has aroused wide attention. In order to study its optical and electrical properties, this paper has researched the influence of tension-twisting deformation, defects, and mixed type on the electronic structure and optical properties of the armchair carbon nanotube superlattices doped cyclic alternately with B and N by using the first-principle method. Our findings show that if tension-twisting deformation is conducted, then the geometric structure, bond length, binding energy, band gap and optical properties of B, N doped carbon nanotube superlattices with defects and mixed type will be influenced. As the degree of exerted tension-twisting deformation increases, B, N doped carbon nanotube superlattices become less stable, and B, N doped carbon nanotube superlattices with defects are more stable than that with exerted tension-twisting deformations. Proper tension-twisting deformation can adjust the energy gap of the system; defects can only reduce the energy gap, enhancing the system metallicity; while the mixed type of 5% tension, twisting angle of 15° and atomic defects will significantly increase the energy gap of the system. From the perspective of optical properties, doped carbon nanotubes may transform the system from metallicity into semi-conductivity.
Book Synopsis Electrical and Optical Properties of 'Diamond-Like' Amorphous Carbon Films by : F. W. Smith
Download or read book Electrical and Optical Properties of 'Diamond-Like' Amorphous Carbon Films written by F. W. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electrical and optical properties of diamond-like amorphous carbon films, prepared via the dc glow discharge decomposition of acetylene, show a remarkable dependence on preparation conditions. In particular, as a function of the substrate deposition temperature Td, the room temperature electrical conductivity of the films increases from 10 to the minus 16th power to 10 to the minus 6th power/ohm/cm and the optical energy gap decreases from 2.1 to 0.9eV as Td is increased from 25 to 375 C. The films would have essentially graphitic electrical and optical properties when deposited at Td> or = 400C. For possible semiconductor applications, we have shown that these diamond-like films can be doped n- or p-type via incorporation of P or B atoms during deposition. This doping effect has been confirmed via thermopower measurements. At present we are studying the thermal stability of these films. Results obtained from a study of the effects of annealing on the optical properties of these films will be presented.
