Book excerpt: This thesis is a combination of oral history, non-fiction narration, and investigative journalism that culminates in a written and documentary film form that scrutinizes the education systems in two counties in Tennessee. The culture of rural, East Tennessee, and other regions of Southern Appalachia, is often stereotyped by outsiders, and many of these stereotypes are negative (hillbillies, inbreds, rednecks), which creates a negative identity and culture of seclusion for rural, Appalachian natives. One aspect of rural areas in East Tennessee that suffers greatly from such stereotypes is the education structure. For my research, I traveled to Sevier County, TN where I interviewed and observed how education was perceived by locals and students alike. I also explored a more rural, neighboring county, Cocke County, TN. Through these interviews, I was able to better understand the attitudes of these mountain people towards education, and why this negativity takes on a cyclical succession from generation to generation. Furthermore, I was able to capture that attitude on film and how the negative stereotypes affect the identity of young, Appalachian students and their academic careers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if having a parent, a grandparent, or both a parent and grandparent who were educators was a contributing factor for teachers in not only choosing education but also remaining in the profession long term. I constructed a theoretical framework explaining the phenomenon. A review of the literature provided a basis for classifying motivations teachers have for entering the profession, possible reasons for leaving, satisfiers, and dissatisfiers. There were 18 participants in this grounded-theory research. The participants were identified using the snowball method. My study was conducted in a rural county in East Tennessee in 1 of 2 school systems present there. The analysis of the data presented several themes and subsequent findings. The impact of the participants' families was definitely present. Although many participants reported that their parents did not overtly encourage them to become teachers, having witnessed their parents as teachers seemed to have made their transition to teaching easier. Each of the participants had extremely positive childhood experiences with education. The participants also noted that being children of teachers made them more aware of the various types of responsibilities and activities that were required of teachers. The participants also noted that having children of their own made the schedules of teachers more appealing, as well as their intense desire to see children learn. I found through the research conducted with the participants of my study that their parents did not push or force them to become teachers; however, the experiences they had as children of teachers seemed to better prepare them for all of the duties, experiences, and expectations teachers face on a regular basis.

Book excerpt: Common Core State Standards (CCSS), an initiative for standardizing learning in a more indepth, analytical way, have been adopted by 45 states, Washington, D.C., and four United States Territories. When implementing such changes, rural schools face their own unique challenges, where principals and administrators play an important role in the successful culture of change. The purpose of this study was to examine how the principals and district-level administrators in Mountain View School District, an East Tennessee rural school district, supported teachers during the transition to CCSS. In this qualitative study, three principals, two assistant principals, and three district-level administrators were interviewed and provided artifacts in this multi-site exploratory study. Findings indicated that resource limitations forced Mountain View School District to rely heavily on generic training and technological resources provided by the state to support their teachers during the transition to CCSS. Principals and district-level administrators provided support in the forms of communication and collaboration. The findings from this study have implications for education policy makers, district-level administrators, and principals. Policy makers have insight into expectations of implementation and training compared to the reality of implementation and training; district-level administrators have insight into gaps between state training and district implementation, especially for new administrators; and principals have insight into the lack of parent communication. Recommendations include increasing variety in state training, a more realistic implementation timeline, and funding from the state; providing a mentoring program for new administrators and more frequent training within districts; and providing more support for parents and students through communication from principals.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to give an in-depth description of the perceptions of students educated exclusively in rural, unit schools in East Tennessee. Specific areas addressed in the study included: (a) students perceptions and descriptions of their perspective schools; (b) feelings of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the schooling experience; (c) relationships formed with students and adults; and (d) feelings of belonging or ownership; (e) students perceptions about the quality of education they have received; and (f) students comparisons of their school to other secondary schools. The data were gathered through the process of the long interview with open-ended questions with eighteen juniors who had been educated in rural, unit schools in East Tennessee for the entirety of their educational experiences. The intent of the analysis was to utilize the direct quotes of the students whenever possible to present a clear representation of the students individual perceptions or life-world. The findings of the study indicated some overall commonalities, specifically in students satisfaction with their schooling experiences, the strong relationships developed among the unit school family, a sense of belonging at the schools, and feelings of ownership. The students generally perceived that they had received a high quality education, but had recommendations for improvement. The students also perceived their schools as unique, in terms of the closeness, smallness, pride in their schools, the personal environment of the schools, and a family-like nature. The results of this study should prove pertinent in the field of education and particularly to individuals involved in small school research and unit schooling.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to record interviews of selected high school dropouts in a rural East Tennessee county on their perceptions of the role teachers played in their education. The participants were chosen through the purposeful sampling process from an optional school and a recreation center in a rural East Tennessee county. Audio recorded interviews were the primary means of collecting data for this study. According to Glaser (1978), one of the core components of grounded theory is "all is data," which allows researchers to record secondary data sources such as field notes and memos to be utilized as data for this study. A preliminary review of literature was undertaken in order to complete this research study. Four primary categories emerged during the preliminary review of literature: economic issues caused by the high school dropout population, legislation that affects high school dropout rates, poverty as a primary cause of dropping out of high school, and intervention/prevention programs that attempt to keep students in school. The constant comparative method revealed the emergence of two distinct themes in the data: teacher quality and non-school variables. Teacher quality focused on the participants' perception of quality as it related to their teachers. The non-school variable focus was on teen pregnancy, drug use, neglect, and abuse. After the themes emerged, teacher quality and non-school variables, a final review of literature of was conducted. The final review added literature findings regarding teacher quality.
