The author begins with a brief history of American criticism from the rediscovery of classic American letters to the present. In Sophia Peabody Hawthorne, Patricia Dunlavy Valenti situates the story of Sophia's life within its own historical, philosophical, and cultural background, as well as within the context of her marriage.
