With the rapid growth of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), internet became a common platform for users to accomplish many tasks in a convenience way. Purchasing goods and services online is one of those activities that we accomplish over the internet. However, with the popularity of internet, still many online users (perceived consumers) do not purchase things online. Based on the existing literature, one of the main reasons found is the lack of consumer trust in online vendors. Therefore, this study focused on investigating the factors influencing consumer trust in e-commerce environment. The main objective of this research was to examine whether the perceived factors are influential towards consumer trust in e-commerce. The study involved a quantitative method for data collection and analysis. Out of 300 sets of questionnaire, 253 were useful for analysis and interpretation. The findings revealed that all the factors have positive and significant relationship to consumer trust in e-commerce. Discussions involved 360° view on the influential factors and their significance in e-commerce environment. Finally, future implications indicate a need of further study to understand wide range of perceived factors that could contribute towards the growth of participation in online purchasing.

Is it possible to "trust" an institution? What exactly do people mean when they claim to "distrust" their governments? As difficult as it may be to define, trust is essential to the formation and maintenance of a civil society. In Trust and Trustworthiness political scientist Russell Hardin addresses the standard theories of trust and articulates his own new and compelling idea: that much of what we call trust can be best described as "encapsulated interest." Research into the roles of trust in our society has offered a broad range of often conflicting theories. Some theorists maintain that trust is a social virtue that cannot be reduced to strategic self-interest; others claim that trusting another person is ultimately a rational calculation based on information about that person and his or her incentives and motivations. Hardin argues that we place our trust in persons whom we believe to have strong reasons to act in our best interests. He claims that we are correct when we assume that the main incentive of those whom we trust is to maintain a relationship with us—whether it be for reasons of economic benefit or for love and friendship. Hardin articulates his theory using examples from a broad array of personal and social relationships, paying particular attention to explanations of the development of trusting relationships. He also examines trustworthiness and seeks to understand why people may behave in ways that violate their own self-interest in order to honor commitments they have made to others. The book also draws important distinctions between vernacular uses of "trust" and "trustworthiness," contrasting, for example, the type of trust (or distrust) we place in individuals with the trust we place in institutions Trust and Trustworthiness represents the culmination of important new research into the roles of trust in our society; it offers a challenging new voice in the current discourse about the origins of cooperative behavior and its consequences for social and civic life. Book excerpt: The importance of trust in building and maintaining consumer relationship in e-commerce environment is recognized in the Information Systems literature since prior researches show that general lack of trust in e-commerce is a significant factor in inhibiting online purchases. A key challenge for researchers is to identify antecedent variables that engender consumer trust in ecommerce including business-to-consumer (B2C) and consumer-to-consumer (C2C). Although C2C has been found to be more popular than the B2C e-commerce, main stream tends to focus on B2C ecommerce without making a distinction between B2C and C2C. This study expected that two influences: internal facts including natural propensity to trust and perception of web site quality, and external facts including other's trust of buyers/sellers and third party recognition would affect an individual's trust in C2C e-commerce. This research extended this model of an individual's trust in C2C e-commerce to include age and gender as control variables.

Book excerpt: E-commerce has grown widely as a new mode of trading goods and service to every work and aspect of the society due to the rapid growth of the use of internet. However, consumers are still sensitive towards the trust of e-commerce. This study examines the factors that are affecting consumers' trust towards e-commerce, with evidence from students in Jordanian university. Using the sample of 150 university students in Jordan through questionnaires, the findings indicate that there is significant effect of consumer behaviour as well as privacy and security on consumers' trust. This study recommends that more extensive culture awareness programs should be provided by both public and private sectors in order to provide Jordanian population with needed information about e-commerce and its benefits; and also pay more attention to the security issues and communicate their actions toward ensuring secured services to their consumers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the research is to find the factors which persuade the consumers' trust on e-commerce adoption in Sri Lanka. The creation of the Internet has reduced physical borders and made the world a smaller place where people can able to keep in touch with one another at any time from every nook and corner. This research arise the following research questions. How the security and privacy concerns in online transaction relate with e-commerce adoption? How do the trustworthiness and reliability of the web vendors relate to the consumer's adoption of e-commerce? and How the performance, physical, security, privacy and delivery risk affect consumers to adopt in e-commerce. Questionnaire was used as a research instrument and basically the questionnaire cover two parts; such as 1st part covers questions related to online purchase and adoption of electronic commerce. The 2nd part covers factors affecting ecommerce security, privacy, and trust as well as risk perceptions. The extensive literature survey helped to form the research variables and hypothesis. To measure the questions likert scale measurement was used. The likert scale measurement were ranging from 1 - very unimportant to 5 - very important. This research shows that, consumer's perceived privacy, security and trustworthiness of Web vendor in e-commerce transaction positively contributes to his/her trust in e-commerce adoption. On the other hand the influence of a consumer's perceived security in e-commerce transaction is mediated by consumer's perceived privacy and consumer's adoption in e-commerce transaction not negatively associated with e-commerce perceived risks.

Book excerpt: Providing a concise, balanced and incisive analysis of US diplomatic relations with Latin America from 1776 to the end of the twentieth century, this timely work explores central themes such as the structure of international relations, and the pursuit of American national interest by the use of diplomacy, cultural imperialism and economic and military power. Joseph Smith examines: * the rise of the USA as an independent power * its policy towards Latin-American movements for independence * the evolution of the Monroe Doctrine * pan-Americanism * dollar diplomacy * the challenge of communism. Highlighting Latin American responses to US policy over a significant time span, the study documents the development of a complex historical relationship in which the United States has claimed a pre-eminent role, arousing as much resentment as acquiescence from its southern neighbours. Including a timely discussion of the current issues of debt, trade and narcotics control, this unique and valuable study will be of interest to all those with an interest in US and Latin American international relations.

This book explodes the transformation myth by demonstrating that the Internet and e-commerce are in fact being adapted by firms to reinforce their existing relationships with customers, suppliers, and business partners. Detailed case studies of eight countries show that, rather than creating a borderless global economy, e-commerce strongly reflects existing local patterns of commerce, business, and consumer preference, and its impact therefore varies greatly by country. Paradoxically, while e-commerce is increasing the efficiency, effectiveness, and competitiveness of firms, it is also increasing the complexity of their environments as they have to deal with more business partners and also face greater competition from other firms. This incisive analysis of the diffusion and impact of e-business provides academic researchers, graduates, and MBA students with a solid basis for understanding its likely evolution.
