Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating role that math self-efficacy plays in the relationship between math anxiety and achievement among eighth grade students. Understanding the impact of self-efficacy on school motivation during adolescence is important because a decline in academic self-efficacy often begins during middle school. According to social cognitive theory, both math self-efficacy and math anxiety are variables that are associated with student performance. A correlational design was utilized in order to examine these relationships. Two self-reports were administered to the students in order to quantify levels of math anxiety and math self-efficacy. The students' most current grades in the subject of math were also incorporated into this study as the criterion variable. Results demonstrated that all three variables were significantly correlated and in the expected directions. Regression analyses revealed that although math anxiety was a significant predictor of achievement, math self-efficacy mediated the relationship between math anxiety and achievement. These results are consistent with those hypothesized by social cognitive theory. Despite the fact that mandated standardized testing is increasing in our schools, the primary implication of this study is that students' cognitions about their abilities in math are more important than their emotions or feelings about the subject of math. It is hoped that the results will help educators identify those students who may need additional assistance in order to become self-sufficient learners and confident in their abilities. Educators can also benefit by becoming aware of these other factors that can inhibit student learning.

Book excerpt: Non-traditional learners (NTL’s) are students who have delayed college enrollment, have dependents, are single parents, are financially independent, have non-standard high school credentials, attend part-time or work full-time. They are a growing segment of college students. Their success is critical to the future of the American workforce, but colleges often do not meet their specific needs. A significant number of these students must take developmental education courses to remediate their math skills. Completion of math is a predictor of college success, yet these courses have come under scrutiny for poor student outcomes. At the same time, math anxiety adversely impacts math performance for many students. This study, therefore, explored whether NTL’s suffer more math anxiety than traditional peers, whether math anxiety impacts time on task or course performance for NTL’s, and whether these relationships are potentiated or mediated for NTL’s compared to traditional peers. This quantitative correlational study used a sample drawn from developmental math courses at a community college in the Mid-Atlantic region. Respondents completed a one-time anonymous survey that included the MARS-S math anxiety instrument and questions about NTL characteristics, time spent weekly on course tasks and expected grade in the course.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study is to describe the lived experience of mathematics anxiety for self-described math-anxious students who completed an undergraduate mathematics course online at a university in the Pacific Northwest part of the United States. The theory guiding this study is community of inquiry (COI) introduced by early pragmatist philosophers C. S. Peirce and John Dewey and further developed by D. Randy Garrison, Terry Anderson, and Walter Archer as mathematics anxiety is a learned behavior based on students’ experiences. This research study answers the central research question: What are the lived experiences of mathematics anxiety for self-described math-anxious college students who completed a mathematics course online? Data was collected from a purposeful, criterion sample of 10 self-described math-anxious students who have completed an online mathematics course. Data collection methods included questionnaires, individual interviews, and focus group meetings. Data analysis followed a systematic procedure that included epoche, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and synthesis. Three themes emerged from this research: teaching presence, social presence, and cognitive presence. The findings revealed how self-described math-anxious students who completed an online undergraduate math class experienced math anxiety due to a lack of understanding of the concepts taught through gaps in prior knowledge or the inability to connect new concepts. Further research is needed regarding math anxiety and other factors to include (a) later in life diagnosis or misdiagnosis of conditions that challenge learning, (b) fear of asking for help, (c) social connection with other students, and (d) addressing math anxiety in the online math classroom.

Difficulties regarding mathematics within introductory courses has been cited by participants as a contributing reason for transferring out of STEM fields of study, or avoiding these fields entirely. Substantial amounts of research has explored the relationship between anxiety, including math anxiety, and academic achievement. This research has provided empirically based results which are able to be utilized by higher education institutions as a means of improving their support systems for students with math anxiety. Despite the vast amount of research, there has been limited research exploring the relationship between math anxiety and personality. This study examined the relationship between personality traits self-reported math anxiety within postsecondary students (n = 161). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that a relationship exists, and that the personality dimensions of emotionality and openness to experience are positive predictors, while extraversion is a negative predictor. Consistent with previous research, a significant gender difference was observed in reported math scores, with female responses being significantly higher than males. Additionally, the average math for observed within study was significantly increased in comparison to the normed sample for the math anxiety scale which was established nearly two decades ago, indicating that math anxiety remains a pervasive challenge to our educational system. The author recognizes that while a relationship between personality traits and math anxiety was identified, a medium effect was also found, and that the amount of variation accounted for by the predictive model generated from the analysis was low, suggesting that further research is needed for larger generalization of the findings.

Book excerpt: Math anxiety in adults impacts performance in mathematics as well as motivation to enter STEM disciplines, irrespective of math competence. Less is known about the link between math anxiety and achievement in younger students, the cognitive mechanism(s) that underlie this relation, and the social factors that contribute to the development of math anxiety. Across three studies, I address whether children report math anxiety as early as 1st and 2nd grade, the cognitive mechanism(s) that underlie a relation between math anxiety and math achievement, and whether a child's teacher might contribute to his/her math anxiety and his/her math performance across the school year they share. A within-subjects pre/post design with students (Studies 1 and 2) and their respective teachers (Study 3) was used. In Study 1, I find that 1st and 2nd graders show variability in their self-reported feelings of math anxiety, and further that children's math anxiety relates to math but not reading achievement. To address why this is the case, I ask whether the math anxiety-achievement relation is moderated by individual differences in working memory capacity. I find that children with higher working memory (WM) counter-intuitively show a more distinct negative math anxiety-achievement relation compared to their lower WM counterparts. In Study 2, I replicate the results of Study 1 with a larger sample of students using both linear regression and hierarchical linear modeling to account for classroom variation in achievement. I also turn towards the literature on individual differences in problem solving strategies to put forth an account of why children with higher WM demonstrate a more pronounced math anxiety-achievement relation. Lastly, in Study 3, I examine whether teachers' math anxiety relates to their students' growth in math achievement and their students' math anxiety across the school year. I find that teacher math anxiety is a significant negative predictor of girls' (but not boys') change in math achievement from the beginning to the end of the school year. However, I do not find evidence for a relation between teacher math anxiety and student math anxiety. This work provides the first empirical evidence of children's math anxiety early in development and its relation to math performance. These results will inform interventions designed to safeguard students from the detrimental effects of math anxiety.

Book excerpt: Research suggests that student success in mathematics is positively correlated to math self-efficacy and negatively correlated to math anxiety. At a Hispanic serving community college in the Midwest, developmental math students had a lower pass rate than did college-level math students, but the role of math self-efficacy and math anxiety on these students’ learning was unknown. This causal comparative, correlational study, guided by social cognitive theory and math anxiety research, hypothesized that students in developmental math would have lower levels of math self-efficacy and higher levels of math anxiety, and that significant correlations would exist between course level, selfefficacy, and anxiety. All math students at this setting (N = 1,019) were contacted to complete the self-report Mathematics Self-Efficacy and Anxiety Questionnaire; 32 developmental math and 103 college-level math students returned the survey. A random sample of 32 college-level students was selected to create equal group sizes for the data analyses. Independent samples t-tests revealed no significant differences in self-efficacy and anxiety between the groups. Significant correlations were found for course level, self-efficacy, and anxiety. Lower course level math students reported on average significantly lower levels of self-efficacy and significantly higher levels of anxiety than did upper course level students. A professional development program was created to educate faculty about math self-efficacy and math anxiety and to implement strategies that may increase math self-efficacy and decrease math anxiety over time. This doctoral study has the potential to create social change by offering educators new insight into the role of math self-efficacy and math anxiety in student learning.
