This book was released on 1988 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determinants and effects of an intensive military training experience on a select group of military trainees were studied. The primary dependent variables were (a) differences in questionnaire scores between graduates and those who drop, and (b) questionnaire score changes from pretest to posttest in graduates. A total of 336 trainees at the U.S. Navy's Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALS (BUD/S) training school were tested at the beginning of their training period; six months later all successful trainees were re- tested up on graduation. The total sample was divided into two groups for cross- validation. Results indicated that (a) Graduates differed consistently from Drops on the Estimation scale of the Physical Estimation and Attraction Scale (PEAS), and four scales on the Hogan Personality Inventory (HIP); (b) Graduates showed consistent posttest changes in the Estimation scale, three out of six scales on the Profile of Mood States (POMS), plus four scales on the HPI. Differences between Graduates and Drops suggested that some aspects of the PEAS and HPI could be used as a screening device in order to reduce attrition. Posttest changes on the PEAS, POMS, and HPI in Graduates were in part consistent with previous work and in part somewhat new, indicating both general and unique features of the BUD/S training experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military special operations communities continually seek exemplary trainees to undertake the extremely arduous, grueling and costly training, and upon successful completion, operate in stressful and dangerous environments. The military has refined the requisite physical and mental capabilities of trainees but could be lacking another component, the essential personality traits needed to succeed in these hazardous career fields. The study was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between the 24 scales in the Millon Index of Personality Styles assessment and the performance of students undertaking specialized dive training. This study of the personality traits of 300 Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Marine Corp reconnaissance student divers investigated the performance of student Divers. A robust assessment tool, the Millon of Personality Styles was administered to 10 diver classes. Upon identification of specific personality traits, these characteristics could then be used to develop a standard selection process to to help predict the potential success of Diver candidates. Study findings lend strong support for the use of this type of assessment.

Book excerpt: One-third of a Navy underwater demolition team training class (32 men) was investigated by thrice weekly psychological assessment and serum uric acid and cholesterol determinations until they either dropped from training or graduated. In general, significant elevations in serum uric acid occurred when trainees were eagerly taking on arduous activities with an optimistic attitude and determination to succeed. Significant elevations in serum cholesterol levels were seen in environmental variables, when they were relatively physically inactive, and for selected individuals, when they failed portions of the training course.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Air Force's special operations and combat support specialties in the enlisted force are among the highest in demand by the service yet have persistently high rates of attrition in their initial skills training, which is called "technical training" in the Air Force. These high-demand, high-attrition (HDHA) specialties include Combat Control; Explosive Ordnance Disposal; Pararescue; Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape; Special Operations Weather Team; and Tactical Air Control Party. The Air Force has conducted or sponsored several efforts to address training attrition in these specialties over the past several years, yet training attrition remains high. The reasons for high training attrition are interrelated, with size and quality of the recruiting pool, utility of screening tools, and training environment factors all playing a role. This report addresses the broader challenges for implementing new approaches to HDHA specialty recruiting, screening, and development of Air Force candidates, and takes a holistic approach to identifying methods and tools to ll gaps in current processes
