Book excerpt: When a jet STOVL aircraft is hovering, or in a crossflow, while close to the ground wall jets flowing radially outward from the impingement points of the jets are generated. An upflow, or fountain, is generated where the wall jets from adjacent jets meet on the ground surface. The induced lift and suckdown generated by the impingement of the fountain on the lower surface of the configuration has been the subject of previous studies. This study analyzes the limited available pressure and force data on the effect of crossflow on the fountain induced lift and suckdown. The analysis includes the effects of jet spacing, height and operating conditions. However, it is limited to twin jet configurations of circular, vertical jets operating at subcritical nozzle pressure ratios over a fixed ground surface. Kuhn, Richard E. Ames Research Center...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a graduate text on turbulent flows, an important topic in fluid dynamics. It is up-to-date, comprehensive, designed for teaching, and is based on a course taught by the author at Cornell University for a number of years. The book consists of two parts followed by a number of appendices. Part I provides a general introduction to turbulent flows, how they behave, how they can be described quantitatively, and the fundamental physical processes involved. Part II is concerned with different approaches for modelling or simulating turbulent flows. The necessary mathematical techniques are presented in the appendices. This book is primarily intended as a graduate level text in turbulent flows for engineering students, but it may also be valuable to students in applied mathematics, physics, oceanography and atmospheric sciences, as well as researchers and practising engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of a subsonic round jet exhausting perpendicularly from a flat plate into a subsonic crosswind of the same temperature was conducted. Velocity and pressure measurements were made in planes perpendicular to the path of the jet for ratios of jet velocity to crossflow velocity ranging from 3 to 10. The results of these measurements are presented in tabular and graphical forms. A pair of diffuse contrarotating vortices is identified as a significant feature of the flow, and the characteristics of the vortices are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interference phenomenon occurring when a subsonic turbulent jet exhausts normally from a large flat plate into a low speed crossflow was experimentally investigated in the Georgia Tech nine foot wind tunnel. Static pressures were measured on the surface around the jet. In the region off the surface, including the jet plume, wake and surrounding areas, the average total and static pressures and the average velocity magnitudes and directions were determined. Three jet exit configurations were studied, one circular and two slot-shaped with width to length ratios of 0.3 and 3.4. All have the same exit area. The effective jet to cross-flow velocity ratio was varied, for each of the exit configurations, over the range 4.0 to 12.0. Analysis of the data indicates that the pressure distributions induced on the surface are a combined result of the jet's blocking and entraining effects on the cross flow with entrainment becoming the more dominant of the two as the effective velocity ratio is increased. This relative dominance brings about an attenuation of total interference lift loss (when computed as a fraction of gross thrust) primarily by causing a rise in the low pressures in the wake region as the effective velocity ratio increases. When the effective velocity ratio is held fixed, the total interference lift loss increases with increasing width to length ratio of the jet exit. (Author).

Book excerpt: A recent study of a jet emerging from a circular pipe into a weak cross flow under the assumptions of an inviscid and incompressible fluid led to expressions for the velocity potential in different regions near the orifice as definite integrals and infinite sums. In the present paper the expressions relating to flow inside the pipe and jet are evaluated with great care. It is confirmed that the solutions in the pipe and jet are continuous across the orifice plane. The behaviour of the solution near the orifice is displayed in graphical form, with emphasis on the consequences of the failure to satisfy a Kutta conditions of smooth outflow at the lip. Keywords: Incompressible flow; Inviscid flow; Jets; Jet in cross flow; Great Britain. (jhd).

Book excerpt: th This volume contains the papers presented at the 16 DGLR/STAB-Symposium held at the Eurogress Aachen and organized by RWTH Aachen University, Germany, November, 3 - 4, 2008. STAB is the German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association, founded towards the end of the 1970's, whereas DGLR is the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt - Lilienthal Oberth e.V.). The mission of STAB is to foster development and acceptance of the discipline “Aerodynamics” in Germany. One of its general guidelines is to concentrate resources and know-how in the involved institutions and to avoid duplication in research work as much as possible. Nowadays, this is more necessary than ever. The experience made in the past makes it easier now, to obtain new knowledge for solving today's and tomorrow's problems. STAB unites German scientists and engineers from universities, research-establishments and industry doing research and project work in numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and aerodynamics for aerospace and other applications. This has always been the basis of numerous common research activities sponsored by different funding agencies. Since 1986 the symposium has taken place at different locations in Germany every two years. In between STAB workshops regularly take place at the DLR in Göttingen.
