Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on early germination, one of maize germplasm most important strategies for adapting to drought-induced stress. Some genotypes have the ability to adapt by either reducing water losses or by increasing water uptake. Drought tolerance is also an adaptive strategy that enables crop plants to maintain their normal physiological processes and deliver higher economical yield despite drought stress. Several processes are involved in conferring drought tolerance in maize: the accumulation of osmolytes or antioxidants, plant growth regulators, stress proteins and water channel proteins, transcription factors and signal transduction pathways. Drought is one of the most detrimental forms of abiotic stress around the world and seriously limits the productivity of agricultural crops. Maize, one of the leading cereal crops in the world, is sensitive to drought stress. Maize harvests are affected by drought stress at different growth stages in different regions. Numerous events in the life of maize crops can be affected by drought stress: germination potential, seedling growth, seedling stand establishment, overall growth and development, pollen and silk development, anthesis silking interval, pollination, and embryo, endosperm and kernel development. Though every maize genotype has the ability to avoid or withstand drought stress, there is a concrete need to improve the level of adaptability to drought stress to address the global issue of food security. The most common biological strategies for improving drought stress resistance include screening available maize germplasm for drought tolerance, conventional breeding strategies, and marker-assisted and genomic-assisted breeding and development of transgenic maize. As a comprehensive understanding of the effects of drought stress, adaptive strategies and potential breeding tools is the prerequisite for any sound breeding plan, this brief addresses these aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stresses create barriers in normal growth and developmental processes of plants. Plant life cycle is distorted variably depending upon severity of stress, type of stress and growth stage of plant. Among stresses drought is most severe regarding adverse effects to the agricultural crop productivity at Global level. Among cereals, maize is very important cereal due to multiple utilization for versatile purposes. Drought also affects the maize as it does with other crops so, there is dire need to recognize the effects of drought on maize in detail. This book is typically focusing on interference by drought in maize life cycle. Determination of possible effects on a plant enables the researcher to explore the resources to ameliorate the adverse effects of stress. Furthermore, recognition of plant traits to exploit in breeding, selection and screening of germplasm is also very critical stage in-order to identify suitable traits. This book also include the traits to be used as selection criteria for improvement against drought stress in maize.

While isolated examples of the physiological bases for genetic improvement of maize yield can be found in several papers (most of which are cited in this book), there has not, until now, been a single volume that delivers and clarifies all of the available information in this field! Today, Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement offers scientists and crop growers a thorough and concise guide to recent literature and developments about increasing the crop efficiency of corn. In Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement, international experts in the field discuss and analyze methods of effectively improving crop breeding and producing better and larger yields of corn. Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement delivers clear, thorough discussions of: improving maize grain yield potential in a cool environment improving maize grain yield potential in the tropics processes affecting maize grain yield potential in temperate conditions maize improvement for drought-limited conditions apical dominance, herbivory resistance, and competitive ability the use of simulation models for crop improvement . . . and much more! With this book, you will find ways to improve maize crops in a variety of countries and climates and understand the importance of kernel numbers and kernel growth to the overall yield. Containing current research and case studies, Physiological Bases for Maize Improvement provides you with vital strategies that will improve the quality and quantity of corn and increase plant functionality and fitness.

Hybrids to Agronomic Production Practices written by Alexander Joseph Lindsey and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential of climate change to impact crop production has increased farmer interest in new drought-tolerant maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids. However, limited research on the physiology and agronomic management of these hybrids has been published. Three separate field studies were conducted from 2012 through 2014 at Hoytville, South Charleston, and Wooster, OH to evaluate the physiological and morphological responses of two non-transgenic drought-tolerant hybrids (P0210 and P1352) and two conventional hybrids (P0448 and P1184) to nitrogen application rate (0, 67, 134, 202, and 269 kg N/ha), plant population (59,000, 74,000, 89,000, 104,000, and 124,000 plants/ha), planting date (May or June), and watering treatment (rainfed plus irrigation and water exclusion). Studies in which gas exchange was measured on P1352 and P1184 found drought-tolerant hybrid maintained or increased net photosynthetic rates relative to the conventional hybrids while reducing or maintaining a similar level of stomatal conductance. The ratios of chlorophyll fluorescence were greater for the drought-tolerant hybrid during the vegetative growth stages. The drought-tolerant hybrid also exhibited a greater leaf area index (LAI) and specific leaf area (SLA) as compared the conventional hybrid. The relative chlorophyll content (RCC) was lower in the drought-tolerant hybrids, and P1352 exhibited lower chlorophyll and ear-leaf N concentrations compared to P1184 as was hypothesized. The drought-tolerant hybrids also exhibited a shorter anthesis-silking interval (ASI). The grain starch content was generally similar in the drought-tolerant hybrids compared to the conventional hybrids, but the drought-tolerant hybrids had greater oil content and less protein content than the conventional hybrids. All hybrids exhibited similar responses to population, including a decrease in RCC and an increase in ASI and LAI, and similar changes in grain protein, oil, and starch content. The grain yield at the agronomic optimum nitrogen rate (AONR) was similar regardless of hybrid (
