Book Synopsis Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates of the Northern Pacific Coast by : Megumi F. Strathmann
Download or read book Reproduction and Development of Marine Invertebrates of the Northern Pacific Coast written by Megumi F. Strathmann and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference work is designed to provide background information on an array of northeastern Pacific marine invertebrate species so that they can be more easily included in comparative studies of morphology, cell biology, reproduction, embryology, larval biology, and ecology. It is meant to serve biologists who are new to the field as well as experienced investigators who may not be familiar with the invertebrate fauna of the northern Pacific Coast. The species discussed in this volume are mostly from the cold temperate waters of the San Juan Archipelago, near Puget SOund and the Strait of Georgia, but the information and methods given will be useful in laboratories from Alaska to central California and applicable to some extend in other coastal or inland facilities. An introductory chapter discusses basic prodcedures for collecting and maintaining mature specimens, for initiating spawning, and for culturing embryos and larvae in the laboratory. Subsequent chapters summarize reproduction and development in thirty different invertebrate groups and provided ercent references through which additional information can be traced, cite monographs or keys needed to identify species, and give methods useful for studying an array of selected species. Available information on habitat, diet, reproductive mode, egg size, developmental pattern, developmental times, larval type, and conditions for settlement and metamorphosis is reported for over 450 species.

Book Synopsis Selected Papers from the 3rd International Symposium on Life Science by : Valentin A. Stonik
Download or read book Selected Papers from the 3rd International Symposium on Life Science written by Valentin A. Stonik and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains information for specialists in various fields of science. From the point of view of pharmacology, data are reported regarding the effect of echinochrome A and related metabolites from sea urchins on the survival and functional properties of stem cells, which can facilitate ex vivo application of this compound in medicine. For scientists who isolate and establish structures of marine natural compounds, an article devoted to the proof of the microbial origin of a typical metabolite earlier found exclusively from marine invertebrates, 6-epi-monanchorin, may also be of interest. A range of new marine metabolites was discovered from the both marine invertebrates and marine microorganisms, particularly in marine isolates of fungi. Some marine natural products could be applied to treat such diseases as Parkinson’s disease, ischemic stroke, viral infections, and so on. Magnificamide, a new peptide from sea anemones, inhibits porcine and human saliva amylases, showing its probable antidiabetic properties. Application of the genomic approach was discussed in studies on various marine bacteria, producing marine enzymes with unusual specificity. The lectins capable of recognizing glycoforms of different substrates demonstrate the possibility to be used to elaborate new medical diagnostics.
Book Synopsis A Student's Guide to the Seashore by : J. D. Fish
Download or read book A Student's Guide to the Seashore written by J. D. Fish and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-06-06 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students and naturalists are not only interested in which species live on the seashore but also about their biology. How does a particular species reproduce? What is its life cycle? A Student's Guide to the Seashore is a unique, concise, illustrated guide to both the biology and identification of over 600 common and widespread shore animals and plants. In this new edition, for the first time, simple keys are included to allow accurate identification, and each species is beautifully illustrated by the author's line drawings. Together with concise summaries of diagnostic features, and notes on biology, this is the first comprehensive guide to the seashore giving a fascinating insight into the diversity and complexity of life on the shore. An extensive glossary of scientific terms and complete bibliography ensure that this book will be the premier biological text and identification guide for many years to come.
