Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled A Study of the Impact of Foreign Language Anxiety on Tertiary Students' Oral Performance submitted by Lowana Phillips for the degree of Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) at the University of Hong Kong August, 2005 Speaking in a foreign language class, especially in front of others, can be a significant anxiety inducing task for the language learner. Therefore it is important to consider how anxiety affects the foreign language learner. Although there is a large body of research on anxiety and speaking, the specific area of public speaking for Chinese learners of English is relatively untouched. This study investigates the impact that anxiety may have on the assessment of public speaking proficiency and on how students feel about their oral performance. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS; Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986) was used to select four high anxiety and four low anxiety, tertiary-level students from four English language classes at the University of Hong Kong (N=62). The eight students gave stimulated recall and interview comments after watching their videoed presentations. Twelve FLCAS statements were selected as relevant to giving a presentation, and student responses to the selected statements were used as the basis for interview questions. Three different teachers graded each presentation. There were no significant correlations between grade and anxiety level. The highest and lowest grades were given to two high anxiety students with very similar levels of anxiety. However, there were significant differences between high and low anxiety students' perceptions of performance. Overall, the low anxiety students showed a more positive attitude towards giving a presentation in terms of foreign language learning attitude, speaking, and evaluation. The findings suggest that the relationship between foreign language anxiety and oral performance is not always clear cut, and that increased anxiety does not necessarily mean decreased oral proficiency. Despite this it may be necessary for foreign language teachers to be more aware of helping students make use of and reduce their anxieties, and help students improve their attitude towards language learning. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the asynchronous voice-conferencing technology, Voice Thread ®, on the anxiety and oral proficiency of high school students in their third year of studying Spanish as a foreign language. In this quasi-experimental study students' foreign language anxiety levels and oral proficiency were examined to determine if a difference existed based on the type of practice used. The treatment group used Voice Thread ® to practice speaking. The control group used the traditional method of the language laboratory to practice speaking. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) was used to measure anxiety levels and the Performance Assessment for Language Students (PALS) level three speaking analytical grading rubric was used to measure oral proficiency. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the foreign language anxiety data. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to analyze the oral proficiency data. Results for the FLCAS yielded no significant difference between the control and treatment groups. Results of the MANOVA yielded a significant main effect difference between the control and experimental groups. Posthoc pairwise comparisons revealed statistically significant differences for the subscales of task completion, comprehensibility, level of discourse and fluency. The subjects of the present study were 344 college students from Mainland China. They responded to a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire adapted from Horwitz’s Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). Their responses to the questionnaire were submitted to exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (with the help of statistical package of SPSS and AMOS) for identifying anxiety dimensions. The results show that four dimensions of anxiety exist among the subjects and the two dimensions of the FLCAS were closely examined to find the extent to which that the four-factor model adequately fit the data. The fit indices suggested that the instrument measuring the dimensions of anxiety specific to college students in China was valid construct-wise and reliable for future use.

The study also investigated the effect of gender and proficienc y level on anxiety as well as on attitudes to oral error correction. Since the m ajority of research dealing with foreign language anxiety has been quantitative, the final purpose of the study was to qualitatively describe the causes anxious students attribute as being the source of their anxiety. A total of 195 student s enrolled in three English levels (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) at the Leb anese International University participated in the current study. The participan ts completed a modified version of the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, the Questionnaire to measure Attitudes to Oral Error Correction, as well as a b ackground questionnaire. Eighteen students from the highly anxious group were fu rther interviewed. The results showed that students experienced significant leve ls of foreign language anxiety. The EFL learners revealed positive attitudes to oral error correction. The demographic variables gender and proficiency level di d not influence anxiety levels. Furthermore, gender did not influence attitudes to oral error correction. The only statistically significant difference across p roficiency levels was that between Advanced and Intermediate students. The quali tative interview revealed that students had 7 main sources of anxiety: learners beliefs about language learning, perceived low self confidence in English and s peaking ability, beliefs about formal language learning and the role of language aptitude, beliefs about gender difference in language ability, classroom proced ures, instructor - learner interactions, language test anxiety, and unfavorable error correction methods. The pedagogical implications of these findings were di scussed, as were suggestions for future research.

Anxiety is characterized as one of the issues impacting the learners’ accomplishment, which involves stages of communicative anxiety, fear of adverse assessment, test anxiety, and anxiety of English classroom. Moreover, anxiety is identified as being prevalent in the field of education and psychology as one factor that has negative influences in language acquisition (Hashemi, 2011). Studies have shown that there is a relationship between anxiety level and academic performance of ELLs. Factors such as language use, socioeconomic status, and parental education and their association with students’ performance on standardized tests are discussed. Theories and models that will allow students to build on previous encounters while acquiring new knowledge and applying skills to learn a second language are also discussed. This research is necessary to determine whether student’s anxiety level impacts performance in academics and learning English. The findings from this research could help teachers to decrease anxiety associated with learning a second language. Other researchers could use these findings to direct future investigations on challenges faced by ELLs. Overall, this research contributes to a better understanding of anxiety for counselors and other practitioners.
