Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gowan shows some of the diverse ways that men on the street in San Francisco struggle for survival, autonomy, and self-respect. Living for weeks at a time among homeless men--working side-by-side with them as they collected cans, bottles, and scrap metal; helping them set up camp; watching and listening as they panhandled and hawked newspapers; and accompanying them into soup kitchens, jails, welfare offices, and shelters--Gowan immersed herself in their routines, their personal stories, and their perspectives on life on the streets. She observes a wide range of survival techniques, from the illicit to the industrious, from drug dealing to dumpster diving. She also discovered that prevailing discussions about homelessness and its causes--homelessness as pathology, homelessness as moral failure, and homelessness as systemic failure--powerfully affect how homeless people see themselves and their ability to change their situation.

Book excerpt: National bestselling author of APOCALYPSE NEVER skewers progressives for the mishandling of America’s faltering cities. Progressives claimed they knew how to solve homelessness, inequality, and crime. But in cities they control, progressives made those problems worse. Michael Shellenberger has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for thirty years. During that time, he advocated for the decriminalization of drugs, affordable housing, and alternatives to jail and prison. But as homeless encampments spread, and overdose deaths skyrocketed, Shellenberger decided to take a closer look at the problem. What he discovered shocked him. The problems had grown worse not despite but because of progressive policies. San Francisco and other West Coast cities — Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland — had gone beyond merely tolerating homelessness, drug dealing, and crime to actively enabling them. San Fransicko reveals that the underlying problem isn’t a lack of housing or money for social programs. The real problem is an ideology that designates some people, by identity or experience, as victims entitled to destructive behaviors. The result is an undermining of the values that make cities, and civilization itself, possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have always been homeless people in the United States, but their plight has only recently stirred widespread public reaction and concern. Part of this new recognition stems from the problem's prevalence: the number of homeless individuals, while hard to pin down exactly, is rising. In light of this, Congress asked the Institute of Medicine to find out whether existing health care programs were ignoring the homeless or delivering care to them inefficiently. This book is the report prepared by a committee of experts who examined these problems through visits to city slums and impoverished rural areas, and through an analysis of papers written by leading scholars in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homelessness in America's cities remains a growing problem. The homeless today face the same challenges as in years past: poverty, tenuous or no ties to family and friends, physical and mental health issues, and substance abuse. Compared to the 1950s to 1970s, more homeless are now sleeping on city streets versus in shelters or single room hotels. Homelessness rates are affected by economic trends, lack of equitable and inclusive healthcare and housing, decline in public assistance programs, and natural and man-made disasters. This collection of essays covers case studies, innovations, practices and policies of municipalities coping with homelessness in the 21st century.

Book excerpt: The story The Life of A Homeless Person is based on a real tragic event that occurred, of a homeless person caught in a rainstorm far from shelter, who abandoned a shopping cart filled with redeemable items (of great worth to him) to more quickly find shelter, who may have even died of hypothermia. It is a symbol of the human rights problems that exist in America. The author's descriptions of a homeless person's day to day experiences and thoughts, that are based on his experiences of being homeless for eight years, is an account of the hardships of being homeless. That the main character is perceptive, considerate and analytical, suggesting that that homeless people in important ways are no different than you or I, and the paradox of the story, that there are many homeless people in San Francisco and little is done to help them, despite San Francisco's tourism industry and the large percentage of residents who value social responsibility, while San Francisco's attractive nature (described in the story), draws the city dweller's attention to the beauty of life, will bring the reader to be all the more aware that there are social injustices in United States. The author hopes this story raises public consciousness about social injustices in United States, including the problem of police brutality such that people will tend more to empathize with the viewpoint that there is nothing wrong with sharing the wealth (that communism and socialism are of beauty and of worth), so that there are far less social injustices internationally. The book begins with a narration about San Francisco's nature (including a description of the city's severe weather ) and an account of my encounter with a homeless person, switching thereafter to a homeless person's description of his experiences of being homeless.
