The Finite Element Method was initially developed and used by Zienkiewicz for elasticity problems and is at the height of its development at the time of writing. The method is being studied theoretically as well as being applied to a broader and broader range of problems; its applications are found in solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, electromagnetics, etc. Some FORTRAN programs have been written in order to apply the Finite Element Method to the solution for low Reynolds number, incompressible flows around a Joukowski aerofoil, with emphasis on the generation of grids. These programs serve as evaluation tools and as a first step in a planned longer-term study of the Finite Element Method as applied to fluid flow problems.
