The work environment impacts nurses’ perception and loyalty to organizations based on satisfaction versus dissatisfaction, including quality patient care. The purpose of this study was to explore work environmental factors that affect nurse job satisfaction in a hospital setting. Marilyn Ray’s Theory of Bureaucratic Caring was the theoretical framework for this study. The research utilized the McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale (MMSS) to examine factors in an acute care hospital associated with nurse job satisfaction. The study invited 130 nurses from a hospital in rural South Carolina to participate electronically via a link provided through their work email accounts. The sample included a total of 23 participants that completed the survey, including registered and licensed practical nurses (RNs & LPNs). The study revealed no significant work environmental factors that affect nurse job satisfaction. Results of the study indicated that nurses were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with their current jobs (M=3.35). Participants rated the factors that affect job satisfaction in the following order from very satisfied to least: scheduling, co-workers, interaction opportunities, extrinsic rewards, praise and recognition, balance and family, professional opportunities, and control and responsibility.

Book excerpt: This study aims to determine and compare the factors that affect job satisfaction level of certificated and non-certificated nurses in public hospitals, private hospitals, and teaching and research hospitals which belong to the Ministry of Health in Istanbul. Six hundred and sixty nurses (F=579, M=81) aged between 18 and 58 were chosen by convenience sampling. As a framework to guide the design of the study Herzberg's Motivational-Hygiene Theory (1982) was used, and as an instrument Spector{u2019}s (1985) Job Satisfaction Survey was administered. In addition to the questionnaire, nurses were also asked four open-ended questions about their work motivations and demotivations, the reasons for their career choice, and if they have ever considered leaving their jobs. Results indicate that nurses who work at private hospitals have a higher level of job satisfaction than the nurses working at teaching and research hospitals and public hospitals. There is no significant difference between the level of job satisfaction of certificated and non-certificated nurses in general. However, there is a significant difference between the means of hospital types and sub-dimensions of Job Satisfaction Survey (pay, promotion, supervision, fringe benefits, contingent rewards, operating conditions, co-workers, nature of work, communication). In addition, according to the relationship between the job satisfaction level of nurses and their demographic characteristics; there is a relationship between sub-dimensions of job satisfaction and age/gender. Also, there is no relationship job satisfaction and marital status/having children. It is indicated that while patient satisfaction, alturistics reasons, economic reasons, relations with colleageus and administration and working conditions are motivating factors; economic reasons, working conditions, problems with patients, relations with collegues and administration, conflict between nurses and doctors, personal reasons and social status are demotivating factors. The reasons for leaving nursing categorized under unpleasant working conditions, personal reasons, economics reasons, social status, administration and others. The most important reasons for choosing nursing as a job were economic reasons, family reasons, altruistic reasons, task identity, task significance, wrong university choice.

Studies conducted on the job satisfaction of nurses are proof that there is a need to know more about the factors that influence their sense of job satisfaction. Most of these studies focus on the general nursing context. Due to its unique circumstances, many studies abroad have identified the field of psychiatric mental health nursing to investigate job satisfaction of nurses. The minithesis is an attempt to fill the gap that exists in job satisfaction studies in South Africa of nurses in a provincial psychiatric hospital. The study was a cross sectional, correlational, survey design study. The instrument was a self-administered questionnaire, combining a quantitative questionnaire with one qualitative open-ended question. The study was conducted on nurses of all categories in a provincial psychiatric hospital in the Western Cape. Sixty- eight nurses participated in the study. The data was analyzed statistically using the SAS v9 statistical software and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The open-ended question was analyzed qualitatively. The results revealed that the participating nurses were dissatisfied with remuneration, recognition and appreciation, training and development, as well as benefits and incentives. Nurses were most satisfied with supervision and support, interpersonal relationships, and rendering patient care. The study identified the factors influencing job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction of nurses in a provincial psychiatric hospital. Recommendations were made based on the results of the research.
