Book excerpt: Discover a culturally competent model of clinical case management in mental health practice settings. In The Cross-Cultural Practice of Clinical Case Management, author Peter Manoleas synthesizes some of the existent thinking on case management in cross-cultural psychotherapy settings and develops an effective model of clinical case management for mental health practitioners. The person-in-environment approach leads mental health professionals to realize that case managers and their clients must deal with a variety of cultures within the treatment environment. Rehabilitation programs, substance abuse programs, public assistance, the police, and especially psychiatry itself, are each characterized by their own 'cultures.’These may, at times, conflict with or present significant dissonance with the client's own ethnic culture. The Cross-Cultural Practice of Clinical Case Management advocates that the role of “culture broker” be added to the list of activities for effective clinical case managers. Several of the major ethnic groups represented in public mental health populations are examined, as well as other topics relevant to the daily practice of mental health professionals: Effective cross-cultural crisis intervention The culture of homelessness Women and the mental health system Asians and Pacific Islanders Latinos African Americans Native Americans Seriously Emotionally Disturbed Children The Cross-Cultural Practice of Clinical Case Management is of interest to practicing mental health professionals in the public sector as those systems convert from individual therapy to case management models of service delivery. Increasing numbers of ethnic minorities in public systems and the emphasis on cultural competence will make all of the topics of interest to many readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have always been homeless people in the United States, but their plight has only recently stirred widespread public reaction and concern. Part of this new recognition stems from the problem's prevalence: the number of homeless individuals, while hard to pin down exactly, is rising. In light of this, Congress asked the Institute of Medicine to find out whether existing health care programs were ignoring the homeless or delivering care to them inefficiently. This book is the report prepared by a committee of experts who examined these problems through visits to city slums and impoverished rural areas, and through an analysis of papers written by leading scholars in the field.

The case manager's use of textbook and practical knowledge allows for the management of medication, money, and day-to-day life of adults with severe mental illnesses. Yet, Floersch asks, are social workers state agents controlling clients? This critical study examines everyday written and oral narratives to prove that this common critique is untrue.

Until recently, patients with severe and long-lasting mental disorders were treated primarily through hospitalisation and psychotropic medication. However, now there is a concerted effort to integrate treatment approaches from behavioural and rehabilitation therapies and social skills training.; This book presents an integration of psychological treatment and assessment practices, authored by professionals with established expertise in their subject area. Topics of fundamentally important issues have been selected and divided into three sections: assessment and treatment planning; social and vocational skills development; and group and family therapy in rehabilitation. This volume can be used as a reference handbook, a guide to clinical practice, or a classroom text describing the basic psychological approaches that are effective with patients with severe mental disabilities.

The problem has elicited a variety of societal and public policy responses over the years, concomitant with fluctuations in the economy and changes in the demographics of and attitudes toward poor and disenfranchised citizens. In recent decades, federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the philanthropic community have worked hard to develop and implement programs to solve the challenges of homelessness, and progress has been made. However, much more remains to be done. Importantly, the results of various efforts, and especially the efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans in recent years, have shown that the problem of homelessness can be successfully addressed. Although a number of programs have been developed to meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness, this report focuses on one particular type of intervention: permanent supportive housing (PSH). Permanent Supportive Housing focuses on the impact of PSH on health care outcomes and its cost-effectiveness. The report also addresses policy and program barriers that affect the ability to bring the PSH and other housing models to scale to address housing and health care needs.

Book excerpt: The integration of a broad array of interventions is described in this comprehensive, practical guide for those working with seriously mentally ill adults. It draws on the experience of clients who struggle with severe and disabling problems in a challenging urban environment. The contributors argue that psychological and practical issues are intertwined and therefore such interventions must be delivered concurrently. They also emphasize that understanding and using the resources of a client's culture is critical to the successful implementation of care, and that families and natural support systems are essential components of the care system.

These special populations often have limited social support and resources and face multiple life challenges. These factors, along with vulnerability to stress, make it difficult for mental health professionals to engage them in conventional treatment programs for PTSD. This accessible volume includes everything needed to implement a program, including session-by-session instructions, sample dialogues to demonstrate techniques, and user-friendly handouts and worksheets.
