Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together internationally known researchers representing different theoretical perspectives on students' self-regulation of learning. Diverse theories on how students become self-regulated learners are compared in terms of their conceptual origins, scientific form, research productivity, and pedagogical effectiveness. This is the only comprehensive comparison of diverse classical theories of self-regulated learning in print. The first edition of this text, published in 1989, presented descriptions of such differing perspectives as operant, phenomenological, social learning, volitional, Vygotskian, and constructivist theories. In this new edition, the same prominent editors and authors reassess these classic models in light of a decade of very productive research. In addition, an information processing perspective is included, reflecting its growing prominence. Self-regulation models have proven especially appealing to teachers, coaches, and tutors looking for specific recommendations regarding how students activate, alter, and sustain their learning practices. Techniques for enhancing these processes have been studied with considerable success in tutoring sessions, computer learning programs, coaching sessions, and self-directed practice sessions. The results of these applications are discussed in this new edition. The introductory chapter presents a historical overview of research and a theoretical framework for comparing and contrasting the theories described in the following chapters, all of which follow a common organizational format. This parallel format enables the book to function like an authored textbook rather than a typical edited volume. The final chapter offers an historical assessment of changes in theory and trends for future research. This volume is especially relevant for students and professionals in educational psychology, school psychology, guidance and counseling, developmental psychology, child and family development, as well as for students in general teacher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drs. Susannah Wood and Jean Peterson have combined forces to move the field of school counseling forward in its work on behalf of gifted students… This subtle regularizing into appropriate school counseling practice is actually quite radical as is makes it clear that the time has passed to consider whether we should be concerned with the nature and needs of students with gifts and talents, but rather need to move to serving them as a requirement of our profession... And fortunately for all of us, the authors provide a clearly articulated roadmap for helping us live up to our professional responsibilities." --Tracy L. Cross, Ph.D. Created to fill a gap in both counselor education and gifted education, this is the only up-to-date text to provide a concise and practical overview of counseling services designed specifically for gifted and talented students. Grounded in the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model for counseling programs, the book illuminates specific knowledge, awareness, and skills school counselors need to address concerns related not only to academics, but also to social and emotional development of this population. The text delivers a theoretical and practical overview of gifted and talented education in the United States and the responsibilities of school counselors as they pertain to this unique population. Going well beyond the common call to provide academic challenge, the book considers special characteristics of gifted and talented students as it examines the complexities of career development, college readiness, and concerns related to social and emotional development. It discusses how counselors can advocate for gifted students, lead efforts to match programming and needs, and collaborate with school staff and families. Vignettes depicting critical incidents and epitomizing needs are used to illuminate differentiated counseling approaches that support this student population. Each chapter highlights a key concept, and curriculum guidelines and resources for professional development support the text. KEY FEATURES: Interweaves school counseling and gifted education research and practice Considers characteristics and counseling concerns associated with giftedness Is based on the ASCA model for counseling programs Examines the complexities of career development, college readiness, and social/emotional development in this population Highlights key concepts and includes vignettes of critical incidents

More specifically, this study looks at one specific social emotional category, self-esteem, and examines the possibility of a correlation to academic success. Using a well-established quantifiable measure of self-esteem, The Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory and each of its embedded self-esteem subscores (General Self, Social Self, Home/ Parent Self, School/ Academic Self), the self-esteem level of 51 volunteer participants were established. Each participant was middle school aged (Grades 6-8) and was a current student at a middle school in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Using a multiple regression, these Coopersmith scores were individually compared to grades in core academic subjects (Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies) as well as NJSLA standardized assessment scores in Math and ELA. The results varied for the different conducted tests. Overall, a correlation was not found to exist between NJSLA scores and self-esteem as determined by the Coopersmith Self Esteem Inventory. However, there was a positive correlation found to exist between grades in core academic subjects and participant self-esteem. The correlation was not strong enough to be used as a predictor for individual student grades or self-esteem level; however, a P-value of greater than .95 for multiple Coopersmith subscores is indicative of a relationship between the two variables that is statistically significant. This is evidence to suggest that as a whole, middle school students with higher self-esteem are also more likely to see an increase in academic success as well. (ProQuest abstract).

A total of 89 3rd year Educational and Behavioral science students were selected using convenience sampling method. To collect data four questionnaires (EI, LC, SE and TA) and document analysis for AA were employed. One sample t-test, Pearson correlation, independent t-test and multiple regressions were used to analyze the data. The result of one sample t-test shows that students have better level of EI. The level of students LC is slightly internal as a group. Students had significantly high level of self-esteem and students have low test anxiety level. The study revealed that positive and significant relationship between EI and AA, EI and SE, EI and ILC, in contrast EI and ELC, EI and TA shows negative relationship. All EI dimensions show a positive significant relationship with AA. The independent sample t-test revealed that there was significance difference between male and female students in EI. Meaning males have higher score than females. There was statistically significant mean difference between male and female students. Female students have high level test anxiety than male students. Females are more external in locus of control than males. There is no mean difference between male students in AA and SE. regression analysis shows that LC, SE and TA predict academic achievement. On the other hand, the effects of emotional intelligence on academic achievement were found not statistically significant. Furthermore, the effect of LC and TA on AA found to be negative.

Book excerpt: "Non-cognitive skills" are often used to refers to those skills that do not fall within the cognitive category but to describe a stable pattern of thought, feeling, and behavior in different situations and backgrounds with profitable and investable characteristics, such as conscientiousness, perseverance, and teamwork, which are critically important in education. However, for many years, "non-cognitive skills" have always been ignored in human capital theory. The book, using a multidisciplinary approach, tries to uncover the noncognitive components of human capital, so as to answer the question "what is the skill that should be invested in?" The author expands the connotations of human capital by exploring the value of noncognitive skills and their production patterns, constructing a measurement framework and a set of tools to measure noncognitive skills. She especially carries out an empirical survey which covers primary and secondary school students from seven provinces of China’s east, middle, and west areas. With the data collected, she analyzes Chinese students’ noncognitive development and further identifies the critical factors that may impact their noncognitive skills by applying the Bayesian Model Average approach. The book will be a theoretical contribution to education economics. Researchers interested in education in China, children’s development, and policymakers in the field of education will find this book helpful and resourceful.

Book excerpt: Previous research has shown relationships between ethnic identity and other aspects of the self-concept such as efficacy and self-esteem, particularly among minority groups. This study examined the relationships between ethnic identity, collective self-esteem and academic self-efficacy. These relationships were examined among an overall sample of 144 respondents, and among two distinct samples consisting of Black and White respondents, respectively. Results showed positive correlations between ethnic identity and academic self-efficacy, collective self-esteem and academic self-efficacy, and between ethnic identity and collective self-esteem for the overall sample. Similar results were found for the sample consisting of Black respondents only. For the White sample, a positive correlation was found between collective self-esteem and ethnic identity only. The study further examined the relationships between academic self-efficacy and the ethnic identity and collective self-esteem subscales. For the overall sample, positive correlations were found between academic self-efficacy and the ethnic identity search and commitment subscales. Correlations for this sample were also found between academic self-efficacy and the membership self-esteem and private collective self-esteem subscales. For the Black sample, correlations were found between academic self-efficacy and the ethnic identity search and commitment subscales. Furthermore, there were correlations between academic self-efficacy and the membership self-esteem subscale, as well as the private collective self-esteem subscale for Black respondents. For the White sample, no relationships were found between academic self-efficacy and any of the collective self-esteem and ethnic identity subscales. Furthermore, limitations of the current study were identified and, subsequently, recommendations for future research were made. It was recommended that future research include other aspects of the self-concept such as personal self-esteem and actual academic achievement, so as to determine the relationships between these and the variables examined in the current study.
