The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between substance use and teen dating violence among Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino youth. A quantitative study was conducted with 24 youth attending an alternative charter high school in an urban city. The majority of the participants engaged in substance use with more than half using two or more substances within the past 30 days. Psychological teen dating violence was the most reported type of victimization and perpetration. Implications for social work and future research are discussed.

Dating violence takes three major forms, namely physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. This project sought to explore the challenges associated with teen dating violence among Latino teens. The review of the literature utilized a vast array of information such as secondary statistical data, documented interviews, peer reviewed articles and insight from experts. There is evidence to suggest plausible correlations between background, socioeconomic status, social environment, and drug abuse. An intervention was created to educate Latino youth on teen dating violence and offer support to prevent abuse from occurring and/or continuing."--Abstract, p. 1.

Book excerpt: Victims of teen dating violence (TDV) in the United States engage in risk behaviors that increase their vulnerability to ill health. Although teen dating violence affects millions of adolescents of diverse ethnic backgrounds, there is a higher prevalence of TDV among Blacks and Latinos. In order to develop effective interventions for diverse populations, it is critical to understand the risk behaviors associated with different victims of TDV. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether there is a difference between the risk behaviors (alcohol abuse, illegal drug use and perilous sexual intercourse) engaged in by Black, Latino and White adolescent victims of TDV. The national 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was the source of data. This thesis hypothesizes that there are different risk behaviors related to each ethnic group, and aims to provide information to support the development of culturally competent TDV interventions.

Book excerpt: Latina adolescents are more likely to be the victims of teen dating violence (TDV) than non-Latina White adolescent girls in the United States, (11.5% vs. 8%). A need exists to understand how culture impacts Latina adolescents' ability to communicate about dating violence with their parents and/or other authority figures. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with English speaking Latina adolescents, ages 15-19 years, who were attending an urban alternative high school in King County, Washington. Most of the girls were born in the U.S. (55%) and the rest were immigrants, most commonly from Mexico. Almost all the girls' parents emigrated from Latin America. The six focus groups examined participants' knowledge of TDV, how culture impacts TDV, and whether cultural factors affect communication with parents and other authority figures. The participants discussed their knowledge and beliefs, cultural factors, and recommendations for Latina specific prevention programs. The girls were knowledgeable about dating violence. One-half of Latina adolescents had either experienced TDV themselves, or had a family member or close friend who had experienced it. The girls report that cultural issues affect their ability to communicate about dating violence with parents and other authority figures. These cultural factors include biculturalism, collectivism, familism, and machismo. The girls also suggest ways to improve prevention programs and recruit participants. The findings indicate that cultural factors are an important consideration in Latina adolescent communication with parents and authority figures when it comes to TDV. Latina adolescents would benefit from future TDV prevention programs that are culturally tailored and which address these cultural factors.

Cultural gender attitudes and beliefs were analyzed to determine if they have an impact on school violence. The findings revealed that males are more inclined to engage in violent behavior at school. Males are more likely to carry a gun and weapons at school. They are more prone to engage in a fight and be injured. Males have a higher likelihood than females to be threatened at school. In regard to teen dating, this study found that females are more likely to be forced to have sex. Finally, more females than males reported to be victims of bullying. The findings may contribute to the development of effective preventive measures for Hispanic adolescents that could be implemented in a school based setting and may reduce the prevalence of school based violence.

The most common source of formal help was from school personnel (9.2%), followed by social services (4.7%). The most common sources of informal help were friends (42.9%). When examining cultural factors, being more Latino oriented was associated with decreased odds of experiencing any dating violence. In relation to help-seeking, a one-unit increase in familism was associated with higher odds of formal help-seeking than not seeking formal help. While depression, anxiety, and hostility were associated with various forms of dating violence victimization, they were best explained by the count of all victimizations. In regards to school outcomes, experiencing physical dating violence was related to receiving special education services. Experiencing victimization also generally increased the odds of engaging in delinquency. Social support was related to decreased odds all types of dating violence. In some cases, it also moderated the effects of dating violence on certain outcomes (e.g., hostility). Overall, results suggest Latino youth have significant comorbid victimization and are most likely to seek informal help from friends rather than formal outlets. However, when formal resources are used, schools appear to be the primary point of contact. The use of informal help-seeking as a gateway to formal help is recommended. In addition, the role of Latino orientation and social support appears to be important in diminishing victimization risk and the negative impact of interpersonal violence among these youth.

Book excerpt: Much of the research on teen dating violence has attempted to take the ideas associated with adult domestic violence and intimate partner violence and apply it to teen relationships. This research was conducted to discover the underlying dimensions of teen relationships and the violence that exists in these relationships in order to provide a conceptual idea of who should be targeted, with what information, and at what age with prevention efforts aimed at reducing teen dating violence. Wichita Kansas has implemented a variety of prevention and intervention strategies aimed at reducing the prevalence of teen dating violence in the community for almost a decade. Participants in this study were recruited from 6th through 10th graders who were scheduled to receive intervention curriculum in their schools. Several items from the General Youth Relationship Survey-Student Version (Hertzog, Matson, & Rowley) were analyzed using factor analysis to discover the underlying dimensions of teen dating violence. Physical/emotional abuse, monitoring and controlling behaviors, and relational entitlements were the key dimensions gleaned from this analysis. An examination of the factor score means with several student characteristics were also analyzed. Girls were found to witness more teen dating violence in their friend's relationships as well as hold more agreement with relational entitlements than boys. African American teens were more likely to report witnessing teen dating violence than Hispanic or white teens; however, Hispanic teens were more likely to report that a person has certain relational entitlements over their partner. This study also found that, in order to provide actual prevention, efforts should be targeted towards late elementary to early middle school-aged students.

Book excerpt: The current understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV) in the Latino population as a whole is relatively limited and even less is known about IPV among adolescent Latinos as they are not well represented in adolescent dating violence research. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2013), the Latino population has increased by more than 50% since 1990 and is currently the largest racial or ethnic minority group in the United States. Thus, the well-being of Latinos is of great importance to the general health of the United States. Given that dolescent females are less likely to seek refuge from their male partners beating if they have had witnessed their mothers as victims of abuse, this project aims to provide early intervention and prevention services to adolescent Latina youth that are currently not readily available for adolescents, specifically in mental health agencies that only provide IPV services to mother victims of IPV. This project is an equally balanced program for adolescent Latina youth who identify deeply with the Latino community and also the American culture they too grew up in as a result of their parents immigration from their country of origin to the land of opportunity. It is a unique group that offers necessary services with a preventative approach to Latina youth during adolescence, an important window of opportunity to thwart the perpetuation of violence and abuse. Most importantly, it takes into account cultural factors unique to her experiences in a culture that due to a lack of IPV understanding, places her at higher risks to continue the cycle of IPV.

Book excerpt: A scholarly project has been conducted to assess use of public narrative between health care providers (HCPs) and Latina adolescents to reduce dating violence (DV) health consequences. Latina adolescents require an innovative, transcultural approach for dating violence care to reduce barriers to care. Healthcare providers must structure dating violence care to Latina adolescents due to different dating violence patterns and health consequences compared to other ethnicities and generations. There is minimal evidence- based research on the use of public narrative and its effects of use in the healthcare setting. The application of public narrative and the citizen professional will be presented to healthcare providers at a community-based clinic that predominantly treats Latino patients. The overall conclusion was that the use of public narrative and the citizen professional could benefit Latina adolescent dating violence care. The healthcare providers see more Latina adults than adolescents that suffer from dating violence but conclude that public narrative and citizen professional would be beneficial for Latina adults as well. Further investigation needs to be done to address Latina adolescent perspectives on public narrative and citizen professional utilization for dating violence in the healthcare setting. Overall, this scholarly project enhances the advanced nursing practice by developing a cost-effective, transcultural approach towards improving healthcare for Latina adolescent dating violence victims.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Adolescence breaks new ground as an important central resource for the study of adolescence. Comprehensive in breath and textbook in depth, the Encyclopedia of Adolescence – with entries presented in easy-to-access A to Z format – serves as a reference repository of knowledge in the field as well as a frequently updated conduit of new knowledge long before such information trickles down from research to standard textbooks. By making full use of Springer’s print and online flexibility, the Encyclopedia is at the forefront of efforts to advance the field by pushing and creating new boundaries and areas of study that further our understanding of adolescents and their place in society. Substantively, the Encyclopedia draws from four major areas of research relating to adolescence. The first broad area includes research relating to "Self, Identity and Development in Adolescence". This area covers research relating to identity, from early adolescence through emerging adulthood; basic aspects of development (e.g., biological, cognitive, social); and foundational developmental theories. In addition, this area focuses on various types of identity: gender, sexual, civic, moral, political, racial, spiritual, religious, and so forth. The second broad area centers on "Adolescents’ Social and Personal Relationships". This area of research examines the nature and influence of a variety of important relationships, including family, peer, friends, sexual and romantic as well as significant nonparental adults. The third area examines "Adolescents in Social Institutions". This area of research centers on the influence and nature of important institutions that serve as the socializing contexts for adolescents. These major institutions include schools, religious groups, justice systems, medical fields, cultural contexts, media, legal systems, economic structures, and youth organizations. "Adolescent Mental Health" constitutes the last major area of research. This broad area of research focuses on the wide variety of human thoughts, actions, and behaviors relating to mental health, from psychopathology to thriving. Major topic examples include deviance, violence, crime, pathology (DSM), normalcy, risk, victimization, disabilities, flow, and positive youth development.
