Book Synopsis The Ecology of Aquatic Hyphomycetes by : Felix Bärlocher
Download or read book The Ecology of Aquatic Hyphomycetes written by Felix Bärlocher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic hyphomycetes were discovered 50 years ago by C.T. Ingold. They remained a relatively obscure group until their role as intermediaries between deciduous leaves and stream invertebrates was established some 20 years ago. This book, for the first time, provides a comprehensive summary and critical evaluation of the biology and ecology of these organisms. Aspecial effort was made to evaluate the potential and actual insight that have been or will be derived from work in related disciplines such as the ecology of other fungal groups, stream ecology, or population ecology. The topics treated include the basic life history of the fungi and the potential role of wood, a discussion of how the fungi have adjusted to life in running water, their interactions with invertebrates, the attachment and germination of their spores, what is known about sexual reproduction, how water chemistry may influence their distribution and activity, how they react to human degradation of their environment, and a summary of the research done on the Indian subcontinent. The volume is of special interest to mycologists and stream ecologists and should facilitate the entry of new workers into this exciting area.

Book excerpt: Lakes of Africa: Microbial Diversity and Sustainability examines microbial ecosystems in African lakes, including the history and formation of African lakes. The book describes how environmental stressors—including seasonal variations, climate change, and anthropogenic activities—affect microbial ecosystem dynamics in African lakes and the microbial responses to these stressors. The book explores and evaluates extremophiles in African lakes, including industrial biotechnology applications. The book highlights challenges facing microbial ecology in African lakes, as well as the design of models for solving these problems and predicting the future of lake microbial ecosystem sustainability. Includes unique case studies on both African lakes and brine lakes, providing real life examples of the topics discussed Provides a foundational background to the topic Presents definitions throughout, whenever a new term is introduced, for a seamless reading experience and background information

Book Synopsis Biology of Conidial Fungi, Volume 1 by : Garry T. Cole
Download or read book Biology of Conidial Fungi, Volume 1 written by Garry T. Cole and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology of Conidial Fungi, Volume I covers the history, classification, distribution, and ecology of conidial fungi. Conidial fungi are anamorphic (asexual) fungi of presumed ascomycetous or basidiomycetous origin. Organized into three parts encompassing 14 chapters, the book begins with a brief introduction to the history of conidial fungi. It then describes the systematics, classification, and taxonomy of a particular group of fungi, such as Hyphomycetes, Celomycete, conidial yeasts, and conidial lichen-forming fungi. The dimorphism and pleomorphism properties of these fungi are also examined. Significant topics on the general aspects of the soil, freshwater, marine, and aerial ecology of conidial fungi are considered in other chapters. This volume is of value to researchers and advanced students who are interested in the basic aspects of conidial fungi.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented here provides a sound scientific basis for management and policy decisions regarding the productivity and sustainability of forest ecosystems in the context of a rapidly changing global environment. It is the synthesis of 5 years of field and laboratory research on southern forests conducted by the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service to provide scientific assessments to the US Global Change Research Program, and, as such, is invaluable for policy makers and land use managers.
Book Synopsis Impact of Air Pollutants on Southern Pine Forests by : Susan Fox

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public's attitude toward air pollution in the United States evolved substantially during the 1960s. One of the results of the nation's emerging environmental ethic was the creation of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in December of 1970. Prior to this time, research was focused on the impacts of air pollution on human health and welfare and was largely conducted by several federal research agencies, which included the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; and the U. S. Department of Agricul ture. After the creation of the EPA, much of this work was consolidated in one regulatory agency, which resulted in periodic evaluations of the various effects of atmospheric pollution on human health, materials, agriculture, and forest ecosystems. At the same time that environmental interest was growing in the United States, concern increased in the European scientific community and public over the ecological impacts of acidic deposition. As the magnitude of the damage to European lakes and streams and the widespread decline in Norway spruce and silver fir was reported, concern that similar problems were occurring in the United States increased substantially. This concern was heightened by press reports of high elevation spruce-fir forest declines in the Adirondack and Appalachian Mountains and the decline and death of sugar maples in the northeastern United States and Canada.
Book Synopsis Freshwater Mycology by : Suhaib A. Bandh
Download or read book Freshwater Mycology written by Suhaib A. Bandh and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-05-27 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater Mycology: Perspectives of Fungal Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems presents chapters from expert contributors around the world. Through the contributed chapters, the contributors explore the perspectives of fungal dynamics in freshwater ecosystems, especially their diversity, distribution, functioning and role, biotransformation and bioprospecting potential, methodical advancements and metagenomic insights. Written with aquatic ecologists in mind, this book provides information on oceanic, estuarine and freshwater ecosystems not currently well understood and identifies new questions and answers about the roles of mycology in aquatic ecosystems. This topic is becoming an increasingly important area to understand due to the increasing global transports of microbes due to climate change and human actions. This is leading to a rapid loss of healthy freshwater ecosystems, the grave problem of antibiotic resistance, and the rarity of qualified mycology taxonomists and molecular systematicians. Includes data from locations not previously or well covered from prior synthesis publications Identifies new information on the roles of mycology in aquatic ecosystems Provides insights into the fungal diversity of freshwater ecosystems, along with their potential roles
